The deadly betrayal.

“I am sorry, Alpha, but we cannot use your wife for this transplant. She has a chronic heart disease and cannot afford to donate a kidney,” the doctor said. “I suggest you exercise a little more patience until we find a matching kidney for Miss Veronica.”
All hell broke loose at that moment.
“What the hell do you even mean by that?!” He barked. I flinched hard, almost toppling over as the air condensed.
My vision blurred briefly as his aura pressed against my chest. I gripped the chair hard, waiting for my heartbeat to steady.
“What does her heart condition have to do with a kidney transplant? Veronica is her sister and she is a perfect match! What more is there?”
His words sliced through me like a knife. The edges of my eyes prickled with a familiar sting but I blinked it away.
“Please Alpha, you need to understand…”
“Stop giving me that nonsense!” Liam fired. “She is carrying my baby. My only heir after seven long years of marriage. Do you expect me to just sit back and watch my child die?”
I bit hard into my lip. It was true I couldn't give him a child. In seven years, I have had five miscarriages, all because of my heart condition.
Our only option was surrogacy and Veronica had volunteered. I was her only sister after all, and she couldn't watch my marriage fall apart.
It was for that very reason, I didn't think twice before accepting Liam's request to donate my kidney to her. It was the least I could do for her.
But hearing him talk like this broke my heart to a hundred pieces. He sounded like my health was not important.
“I'm sorry Alpha, but you have to exercise patience. Her heart is too weak for a nephrectomy. The surgery alone could trigger cardiac arrest.” The doctor said calmly.
“I don't care if she…” he suddenly stopped as I looked up. He threw the doctor a death glare before storming out of the office.
My chest tightened. What was he going to say then? That he didn't care if I died?
“Luna,” the doctor’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts. “Have you been taking your medications on time?”
I nodded, almost absentmindedly.
“Then why is there no significant improvement in your condition?” He asked, completely capturing my attention this time. “Instead of getting better, your condition seems to be getting worse. If it continues this way, you might have to undergo surgery.”
“What?” I blurted.
He pulled out a file and I waited nervously, my heart pounding heavily in my chest. He handed it to me.
“Here are the results of the scan we took on you. You have severe arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy which these medications should have effectively managed but from the scans, it has progressed significantly,” he took off his glasses. “I ask again, are you certain you have been taking your medications?”
I stared at the paper in my hand, not fully understanding what I was looking at but his words echoed endlessly in my head.
“Yes…” my voice came out small. “Yes, I take them every day. My husband makes sure I'm not even a minute late. How… how is this possible?”
I looked at him with panicked eyes, dread pulling in the depths of my stomach.
“What does this mean for me?”
He let out a sigh. “Eight months.”
“What's happening in eight months?” I questioned, puzzled.
“That's how long you may survive without a transplant. It's too late for treatment now as both ventricles are already involved. I suggest you speak with the Alpha so we can arrange for a heart transplant. Your symptoms will grow very severe within the next couple of weeks so try to rest as much as possible. “I’m adjusting your medications, but at this stage they can only slow the progression.”
The words sounded distant in my ears. My body moved robotically as my mind sank into a dark place.
I couldn't remember much of what happened or when I even accepted the prescription. I just found myself walking down the hall, heading to my sister's ward.
Life was really unfair. How could both our lives be in danger at the same time? How was Liam supposed to bear all of this?
How would he even react when he finds out? Oh goddess!
Voices stopped me just before I reached the door.
“Am I really going to die, Alpha?” Veronica's broken voice made my heart clench. “Now that my sister won't donate her kidney, how am I supposed to survive, what will happen to our baby?”
My heart ached at her words. I was starting to feel sorry for her when something clicked.
Wait… our baby?
“Nothing is going to happen to you, my love,” Liam’s words completely caught me off guard.
My love? Since when?
“Jana has always been a doting sister to you and an obedient wife. All I need to do is lash out and overreact and she will go scrambling on her feet to set things right.”
My knees went weak.
I shook my head, refusing to believe this was real, I had to be hearing things.
“Are you sure she will, though? Her heart condition…”
“Cn you stop worrying, Veronica?” Liam groaned. “Who cares about her heart condition? You are the most important person in my life and with a baby on the way, we shouldn't focus on trivial things. Besides, if she's unlucky enough to die, it just means fate is on our side and we can officially announce our relationship.”
I couldn't breathe.
My husband was seeing my sister behind my back? How? Why? For how long?
Oh goddess… I wanted to scream.
My chest rose and fell heavily, my head spun as dizziness crept in. A piercing pain seared through my chest as I reached desperately for the walls, hoping to support myself.
But my hand slipped and I hit the ground hyperventilating. The pain was excruciating and the tears came pouring down freely.
I was on the verge of screaming out when the final blow rolled into my ears.
“Besides, even if she survives the surgery, I already switched out her medications long ago. By the time anyone notices, her heart will already be too damaged to save.”
