CH 2. The invitation

2143 Words
A week had passed since receiving the invitation for 3 weeks away. She was excited about the ball but also nervous and debated about even going. She signed all the paperwork and will be starting work on Monday. Ms. Grey worked with Val on a schedule that would benefit the company and let Val still have time for her studies. Looking through her closet, she decided she would definitely be needing a shopping spree. "Hey," she said, getting Shayla’s' attention. "I need new clothes. Will you go shopping with me..." "Yes!" Shayla said before Val could even finish her sentence. "Alrighty," Val chuckled. "Tomorrow morning, just get up and make a day of it?" Sunday came, and the girls made their way to the shopping strip in town, they went to so many stores, getting everything they needed and some of what they wanted. Walking passed the window of Classics, an elegant dress shop in town, was this multicolored dress the way the fabric laid made it look as though it was flames. "You have to try it on at least." Shayla squeaked behind Val. "I don't even think I am going." Val sighed. Shayla pulled Val into the store. Val slipped the dress on, looking in the mirror it felt like the most beautiful thing she had ever worn. "You should get it just in case. “Shayla stated. "I'll think about it." Val sighed. Back at their apartment, the girls untagged everything they had bought and picked out Vals outfit for tomorrow, a red pencil skirt suit with a white tank top blouse and a pair of black flats. "Get away from the mirror once again. You look great and are going to do great at the job. Stop stressing." Val knew she was right and left heading to her first day at Grey and Grey. "Miss Lovegood, Welcome to Grey and Grey. Mr. Grey is waiting for you in the boardroom. Do you need me to guide you?" asked the receptionist. "No, I remember the way thank you though." Heading towards the boardroom with anticipation. ‘This is hopefully the start to a long successful career.’ Val thought to herself, trying to ignore the voices in her head from her past, telling her she wasn’t good enough or smart enough, that she would always fail. She had to remind herself of what the people in her life who loved her always said to her. That she was smart, kind, intelligent, that she could do anything she put her heart into. Stepping into the boardroom Val saw sitting on the other end of the table was Mr. and Mrs. Grey looking as though they were having an impromptu to coffee date looking so happy and in love. ‘I want that one day” Val thought to herself. “Ah!” Mrs. Grey stated looking away from her husband, “You made it!” “Ready to start?” Mr. Grey Questioned meeting Val’s’ eyes. “Oh, please I don’t want to interrupt, please just point me to where you’d like me to go and ill be out if your hair.” Val pleaded. “Oh, we were just finishing up anyway we always start with coffee first thing when we get to work.” Mrs. Grey stated standing up and heading towards the door Val just came out of. “I’m off to a meeting, Elius try not to scare this one away.” She stated as she exited the room. With a shocked expression Val turned towards Mr. Grey. “I didn’t scare the last one away. He had a weak stomach.” Mr. Grey mumbled loud enough for Val to hear. “Anyway. Val why don’t you have a seat, and we will get started on your hiring paperwork.” Mr. Grey Motioned to the seat across the table from him. “Umm…” Val said nervously “What did she mean scare me away and what did he mean weak stomach?” Val questioned aloud meaning to question to herself. Chuckling to himself Mr. Grey spoke up, “Nothing you will have to worry about.” A calming feeling washed over Val as she made her way to the chair he had motioned to. What felt like hours of paperwork, they had finally decided to break for lunch. Walking back into the boardroom Mrs. Grey had take out from Mahjong which was a Chinese restaurant in town. “Val I would like for you to join us for lunch, that way we could get to know you a little bit better, and you could get to know us a bit better.” Mrs. Grey stated before Val could move to stand up. “Not a problem, I am an open book what would you like to know.” Val stated with a smile, while Mrs. Grey passed out plates and Mr. Grey started opening take out containers. “I know during the first interview you were asked to tell us a little about yourself and we would like to know a little bit more. Like where you grew up and what your childhood was like, personal hobbies and other things like that, there are no wrong answers we are a family-oriented firm, which you already know. We just want to know more about our new family member we know you’re newer in town maybe there are things we can point out to you.” Mrs. Grey said sitting down starting to put together her plate. “Well, you probably know from my background check I was a foster child, and that was one of the main reasons I applied here, the work you have been doing with the foster care system.” Val stated. “Oh, I’m sorry to hear that, I hope your experience wasn’t too bad.” Mr. Grey stated. “It was not as bad as some not as good as others until I met my last foster Mom, Julie Heart, she treated me more like a human being and less like a check.” Val sadly pointed out. “Well hopefully we can make a difference one case at a time.” Mrs. Grey stated with sympathy in her eyes. “Well on a lighter note, tell us about what you like to do on your down time or hobbies.” Mr. Grey stated trying to lighten the mood. “I’m into just about anything that has to do with nature, its calming to be in or near the forest or garden or anybody of water. I also like to read and draw. Down time wise, I enjoy listen to music, watching a movie, hanging with my best friend or reading a good book nothing to crazy.” Val shared with the Greys. They looked curious at each other. Like they were sharing thoughts with each other. As lunch went on Val learned that the Greys had 4 children 2 sons and 2 daughter, the sons were around Val’s age however the girls just turned 10 and 11 the oldest boy and oldest girl are just alike sweet, kind, caring, willing to help anyone in need. The younger of the boys was the complete opposite of the oldest son according to the Grey’s he was a total d**k to everyone but his family. Val gasped at the way they described their son. The youngest daughter was the basic youngest child gets away with everything and is spoiled apple of their eye youngest child. After lunch Val followed Mrs. Grey to her new office. It was simple with a wooden desk, two chairs on the other side and 2 bookshelves and a small fern on her desk with a stack of files on her desk. A new laptop for Val. Walking into the room passed the door she saw a small sofa with a wooden coffee table, and next to it a simple cream-colored rug underneath the table and a small rollable coffee bar in the corner and a window looking out into the little forest park that was in the middle of town. “I hope you’re okay with this office, its normally for our lawyers who work within the firm but since we don’t see you staying in the Clerk position very long with your Bar exam coming up we figured best go ahead and put you in an office instead of having to move you in a few months.” Mrs. Grey stated leaning on the edge of the desk. “You really have that much faith in me.” Val questioned her boss. “I know you are going to do great things” Mrs. Grey claimed.” There are files on your desk ready to be put into their proper folders online there are certain dates and times we are looking for that are listed in the beginning of each folder if you see something that you may think will help any of those cases feel free to let one of us know, our findings are already in the cases folder online. Take the rest of the afternoon to get familiar with your laptop and those files if you have time before knock off get familiar with those cases.” Mrs. Grey said while exiting Val’s office. Sitting in her new office Val let out a shaky breath, she didn’t even know she was holding in. She made herself familiar with her new laptop and noticed that there was a new laptop bag beside her desk and new office supplies filled the desk drawers. It was later in the afternoon when Val started getting lost in the case files that were left on her desk, when she heard someone clear their throat. Startled Val looked up from her work to see Mr. Grey in her doorway. “Sorry I didn’t mean to startle you. I knocked twice the door was sitting wide open.” He stated sitting on the arm of the small sofa. “It’s okay I was engulfed in these files and probably wouldn’t have notice a parade coming through if you hadn’t cleared your voice.” Val stated to Mr. Grey. “Well, I just wanted to see how you were doing since most of the office knocks off at 5 and I noticed your light still on.” He seemed to question. “Oh!” Val gasped looking at the time noticing it was almost 6:30 pm. “I am sorry I didn’t realize it was getting late.” “Hey completely understandable there’s some interesting cases in there. Just make sure to keep a good work/ personal life balance.” Mr. Grey chuckled standing up while Val put away her work and packed up what she would be taking home with her for the evening. Mr. Grey walked Val to the main door chatting about Val’s first day. Before locking up for the night Mr. Grey asked “oh Val one more thing before you go, we haven’t gotten your RSVP for our ball we are hosting at the end of this month we need to know asap if you are coming and if you are bringing a plus one. It can be anyone even that best friend you were telling us about during lunch.” “Well, she would be the only person I could bring but I would have to ask her can I give you a definite answer tomorrow?” “Sure, see you tomorrow Val. Be careful heading home.” Mr. Grey Stated walking towards his car while Val walked towards her apartment building. Making it to her apartment the wonderful smell of Shayla’s Chicken alfredo and garlic bread greeted Val at the door. “OMG your home, how’d it go, what was it like.” squealed the cook from the kitchen area that connected to the living room. “One question at a time please.” Val stated. “It was good, I think I’m going to like it there. I actually have a question for you. Mr. Grey asked me if I was going to the ball, he told me I could bring a plus one so do you want to go with me? If you don’t its fine ill just decline…” “Does a bear poop in the woods? H*ll yes, I will go with you.” Shayla interrupted Val. “We are going to go get that dress tomorrow and get me a dress for the ball.” Val could tell Shayla was super excited about this. Vall just decided she would text Mr. Grey her decision. Me: Sorry to interrupt your evening but I would like to go ahead and RSVP for the ball with a plus one if that’s still possible. E. Grey: Surething, can’t wait to meet your friend, see you tomorrow.
