The stables were bustling as she walked around looking for aunt Martha.
After the attack last night, she had talked her into sleeping and had held her hand till she lost track of space and time and fell into Oblivion.
"The house isn't haunted Matilda, maybe that was just a facet of your imagination" she had said, but she could not believe her. No, not even one bit.
She woke up this morning to an aunt Martha empty room and decided to pack her bags because she meant it when she said she was going back home.
" Good morning " she greeted Thomas the farm hand as she made to head for the barns but decided against it.
" Oh, good morning to you little sunshine " he replied.
Seriously? Was she that little to everyone.
" Why are you in the stables so early? need a hand with stuff "
" No " She replied " Just wanted to have a look around "
" Impressive " he said with a nod as he began packing hays into heep " That's good for you "
" really " she asked as she flipped stray hairs off her face " Why do you say so "
" None of the DuPont girls have interest in what goes on around here, all they do is you know, gossip, shop for clothes and cook, then other times they get preoccupied with school work "
" Oh " she said before dropping her voice in inquiry " And what exactly goes on here "
" You know, running the stables, the horses, their food and that kind of stuff, they probably don't know how to ride one" he huffed as he carried more hays than his body could afford.
" yeah probably " she replied feeling disappointed with his answer, she really wanted to find out what went on in this town. " I was wondering if you have by chance seen aunt Martha this morning"
" No haven't " he replied " The children turned out to be just like their mothers in that aspect, they rarely visit. You know you can come around anytime you need to know a thing or two about horses"
" Yh sure " she replied. " Thank you Thomas " she said as she resumed her walk.
Grumpy much.
Just where the freaking hell was aunt Martha. She was done with Harvabridge and was getting on the next train whether she liked it or not.
Enough of the secrets and creepiness.
.........
" Gather the practicing magicians " Martha DuPont fired " I want to know how my territory was invaded without resistance"
The messenger ran off like a wild fire as no one wanted to be six feets near her. She was angry and furious. She was visibly vibrating.
" Matters like this are meant to be handled calmly " Alex said as she took a seat on the counsel table " Loosing your cool won't do us any good "
" Calmly " Martha asked angrily " How on earth are my supposed to be calm when my... " She stopped her sentence half way as she thought of the implications of completing it.
War
Not even Alex would bear it, and the last thing they needed was a war amongst themselves when the Barrel was upon them.
And so her lips sealed as she gripped the table hard. Knowing and not being able to say killed her, but what could she do?
" We all know that your territory was invaded Martha, but this is not a matter to be solved like this " Alex said.
" And what of Matilda huh, how is it that the one person who is meant to be oblivious witnessed the whole thing, and worse the attack was staged on her "
" Then let the girl go back to her mother believing that the house is haunted or something " Alex instigated " It is better than revealing our towns secret to an outsider, let her go home"
No, Martha thought as she shook her head.
She is home.
" Her mum is away and I can't send her out to be alone, I owe her that much "
" Then what do we do Martha, tell me what"
"I have to figure that out on my own Alex"
Alex shook her head in disapproval and waited a little, weighing her words before asking.
" What exactly is it about Matilda Bront that makes you neglect your duties"
" What " Martha asked getting defensive.
" Tell me Martha " Alex inquired " I need to know "
" And what exactly do you plan to know Alex " Martha fired " That it wasn't a good idea offering to help a friend or that i take full responsibility for each of my decisions "
" Then why on earth would you bring a stranger into the town and worse into the house, making people believe you are her aunt when you and I both know that there are only three DuPont sisters "
Martha gasped in astonishment
" Oma is like a sister to me and I didn't go through hell freeing her from king Raxep only to betray her "
" And yet you endanger her daughter by bringing her here, what kind of friend are you? "
" That is not for you to question Alex " Martha stated coldly " Oma needs help and I will help out in any way possible "
" I don't know why I get the feeling that there is more behind your actions, but whatever it is just know that it is going to jeopardize a lot for us " Alex said before she stood up and walked to the window instantly ending the topic, she looked to get a view of the farms and stables and saw Matilda walking towards the house.
A memory immediately flashed through her mind.
" The girl wants to come back Oma, what do I do "
It was Martha speaking into the phone and the person on the other side should be Matilda's mum, Alex thought as she stood outside the slightly opened door.
" I know, I know it's just she just arrived and I have not even gotten to know her"
There was silence as Matilda's mum spoke and after some time Martha spoke up.
" Tell her you are on a business trip and can't afford to have her stay at home alone, I will think of something " She said before thanking Matilda's supposed mum and ending the call.
What kind of mum received others from people on what to do about her child.
But one thing still baffled her and it's that she looked closely and saw that Martha had tears dropping from her eyes.
She actually cried, Alex thought as she turned back to look at Martha.
Something was just not right.
" The counsel meeting will begin soon and we better get ready " Martha said just as Magi opened the door and walked in.
She sure was a pain in the ass
Alex thought as she got seated.
