CHAPTER 14 The long table in the dining hall was set for six at one end. The opposite side was empty. The wood was polished, but looked plain and ordinary compared to the white plates, silver forks, spoons and knives, the gold goblets, and folded linens. Each place setting sat on the red velvet tablecloth with gold trim. Two decanters filled with wine, a white and a red, were offset in the center, around the courses hidden under shiny silver bubble lids and amidst tall candles. Mykal didn’t think he’d be hungry. Once the aroma from the food reached his nose his stomach growled. He placed a hand over his belly, as if calming an excited dog.
