CHAPTER 24 I spent a restless night, my sleep filled with dreams of Ben Carrick. At some points on the trail Lily was behind me taking photographs I was unaware of; she waved to some people on the trail ahead of us; she’d left a message at the Art Centre advising that I might visit. I tossed and turned my way through the night, waking with a start whilst it was still dark, covered in clammy perspiration. For the first few seconds of consciousness I thought it was all real, fear of discovery creeping over me with the relentless persistence of a rising tide; suffocating the breath from me.
