Prologue
“You never provided for me! You never treated me like a queen! You made me a promise if I chose you, that I would never regret chosing a rouge, that I would be treated like a Lunar. Well now I regret it!”
My mother screamed this at my father. She was on the verge of tears and her voice almost broke. She glared at him and for the first time it was like she saw who he actually was. A liar, a theif and a cheater. A liar for all the false promises and exuses he made, a theif for stealing her life away and a cheater because he cheated her out of a happy one. She had been building this up for a long time, through all the neglectfulness, drunk rages and all the days he would go out to ‘hunt’ but today at this moment is when she actually saw him.
He didn’t even reply, his face went through a range of feelings angry, realisation, sadness and shame. He walked away like he always did. I made a small confused yelp, wondering what was happening. My mother then realised I was there. She looked at me in a surprised calculating manner before she grabbed my arm and dragged me to my room.
”Claire, pack up everything that’s important to you, we are leaving and we won’t be visiting this place for awhile,” she ordered and explained in a sad tone.
”Grab your sister too and also tell her the same thing,” she added.
”Is daddy coming?” I asked curiously.
”No..we are...not.... uh... taking him with us” she answered, unsure of what to say to her eight year old daughter.
===========================
I tried to help my mother load things into the car but she rejected it and quickly ushered me to the passenger seat of the car along with my little sister. She made is seem like a big secret like we were sneaking away from something. I watched her through the side mirror of our rusty car while my sister dozed off. She quickly shut the door and ran to the drivers seat. My father walked out, wondering about the noise, and realised what was happening. Before he could do anything my mother fired up the engine and quickly drove off. I saw my father running for us in a drunk manner before giving up. This would be the last time I see him.
”Why is daddy not coming?” I asked.
” He isn’t.... he lied..... he wasn’t good enough for us,” my mother stuttered before landing on the truth.
”Why wasn’t he?”
“Just because! Now promise me, you won't find some lying weak rouge in your life. Find yourself a strong alpha who will look after you and treat you like a queen. Promise me you will?”
“ I don’t know mommy”
“Promise you will Claire!”
“ Okay mommy,” I replied, startled by her change of tone which also woke my sister up.
That was the first time I heard it. The first time an idea was forced upon me. It wouldn't be the last time, because I would be reminded everyday for the next ten years to not follow in my mother’s footsteps. Not to be satisfied until I found an alpha who would take care of me. I guess this is where it all started for me.
