‘Welcome to Winston Academy, the home of only the Elite students of the world where ......’,
Ava read the leaflet given to her by her mum.
She frowned and dropped it back on the table in front of her.
“I’m not going to any expensive prep school for arrogant and snobby kids”, she said with her arms crossed.
“But you’re coming from an expensive prep school with arrogant and snobby rich kids”, her mother countered looking at the diamond encrusted mirror sitting perfectly on her dressing table while applying her makeup.
“That’s different mother, you know the reason I left there” Ava said, her tone much lower than before. “ I just want to attend a normal school with less rich people’s drama”.
“What of this one?” she asked her mother picking up another leaflet in front of her.
“The Southside School Of Learning,it sounds nice”.
“No way” her mother snapped. “It sounds so basic .....it makes me want to puke”.
Ava rolled her eyes so hard, you might think it would fall out any second.
Her mother loved the expensive lifestyle, that was why she left Ava’s father when Ava was just six years old.
“What do you expect my friends to think of me if they hear my only child was attending that meager school?”
“But mum.....”, Ava tried to speak.
“Be a dear and make mummy happy, won’t you?”, her mum interrupted tapping Ava on the cheek, after which she walked out of the dressing room.
“Also there are lot of very rich guys your age in Winston Academy”, her mother added.
Ava followed her mother down the stairs and into the kitchen, she wasn’t going to let her mother get away from this argument easily.
“Eww Mum ...... I’m just 17” she protested.
“And I was eighteen when I married your father and the only good thing I got out of that marriage was you”, she scowled.
“I’m trying to help you secure your future darling, you’re not getting any younger, you need to start thinking of your future”.
Ava stood back with her eyes wide open, shocked by what her mother said.
What type of mother would want to sell their daughter off at an early age.
But Why was she surprised?
It was her mother talking.
The woman who feeds off on all the rich men she had married in the past.
The woman who got the house she was living in from her fourth divorce.
Ava tried not to think of the past. Not to think of the reason she left home and went to boarding school.
“Now help me with this pumpkin pie, it’s time for me to introduce you to our neighbors, the Carters and their son is very handsome too”, her mother said.
Ava shook her head and carried the pumpkin pie, their maid, Shelia prepared.
Ava followed her mother to the front of their house as she watched her get into her car.
“Why are you taking the car, I thought you said they were our neighbors”, Ava asked.
“Ava, can you stop opposing me for once and get into the damn car?”, her mother scolded, turning the key to start the car.
Ava sat in the car as she watched her mother drive for an hour.
“Neighbors live more than an hour drive away from your house, don’t they?”, she thought laying back in the passenger seat.
They drove through a tall iron gate and stopped before a large mansion.
Men in black suits stood left and right guarding the area and young maids were lined up ready to serve at any minute.
The front yard of the mansion was captivating with impeccable landscape, a clear fountain stood in the middle.
The house had a breathtaking view.
Ava and her mother walked to the front porch of the house.
A bodyguard searched each of them cautiously.
Whoever lived here must be a very high profile person.
Then a maid opened the large decorated doors in front of them.
She took them down the hall and into the living room while she went up to call her madam.
Ava jaw dropped as she took in the scenery of the room.
The large room contained some of the most beautiful antique furnitures she had ever seen, exquisite paintings ,elegant carved sculptures and silk Persian rugs beautified the room.
A middle aged woman walked graciously to where they stood.
She was dressed in a long brown fur coat, that Ava had no doubt cost more than an average American yearly salary.
“Hello Madeline” the woman greeted kissing her mother on the cheek.
Madeline?
Her mother’s name was Jane.
“How fake was her mother’s life here that she had to change her name”, Ava thought.
“Antonia”, her mother replied kissing her back.
“This must be one of her mother’s wealthy friends”, Ava thought, looking at the woman standing in front of them.
‘And who is this beautiful young lady with you?’ Antonia asked smiling at Ava.
“This is Ava, my daughter I told you about” Ava mother replied placing her hand on her daughter’s shoulder.
“Hi” Ava greeted Antonia offering her the pumpkin pie in her hand.
Antonia looked at Ava as if she was sizing her.
Her perfectly drawn eyebrows arched up.
“The one you gave birth to while married to the poor man?”, Antonia asked not minding the presence of Ava, or that she had been holding her hand out, offering her the pie for the last three minutes.
“I thought she was in boarding school?”, she asked, as she signaled her maid to take the pie from Ava’s hand.
“Well she’s living with me now and she will be attending Winston Academy”.
“Splendid!!” Antonia uttered in delight.
“That means she will be in the same year with Roy, he might as well meet her now”.
“Roy” she called out.
There was no reply.
“Roy” she called again, turning the ring on her finger.
“Yes mother” a voice replied followed by footsteps down the long staircase, then a teenager around Ava's age appeared.
He stood beside his mother.
“You know my friend, Madeline, this is her daughter Ava” Antonia introduced. "She will be attending Winston Academy”.
Roy walked up to Ava.
He had an imposing height of 6’3 tall. He was well dressed and handsome with eyes too dark for her comfort.
Yet something inside Ava wanted to know more about him.
More about the secrets he held in those cold distant blue eyes of his.
“Hi I’m Roy, a pleasure to meet you” he smiled, bowing a little as he kissed the back of her palm.
“I’m Ava” she blushed, looking away.
Maybe Ava didn’t have a reason to go to a prep school for snobby rich kids but now she did.
