The Aftermath

Alex: I close the door behind me as I exit the room. I might as well check up on my injured warriors. I was also hoping to get Dr. Sam or Dr. Cassandra to check up on Kenzi for me. I hated leaving her alone in that room, especially in her current state, but my presence just seemed to be making things worse. She saw me kill a man, well wolf technically. I start making my way through the first floor. Most of my men have minor injuries that their wolves will help them heal from within a few hours. Cuts and bruises, that kind of thing. They were at the clinic more as a precaution, getting their wounds cleaned to make sure they wouldn't get infected and make sure they heal properly. I then make my way to the second floor. That's where my more severely injured men had been brought to. I bump into Dr. Sam. "How are they doing doctor?" "Three of them will have to stay here for a few days, maybe more. I still haven't seen all the patients downstairs. Jack has a traumatic brain injury. He is going for a CT scan soon to confirm. I think he might have a fractured skull and a minor brain bleed. His wolf should be able to heal him with time but I want to keep him here until then in case of complications. As for Martin, his arm was almost ripped completely off. I should be able to salvage it, I patched him up for now but he will require surgery to regain full mobility of it. First I have to head to the surgical unit to operate on Tim. He suffered a massive laceration to his abdomen. I need to stitch that back up quickly before he bleeds out. I'll see you later Alex" "Ok, thanks doc". Clearly Dr. Sam didn't have time to check up on Kenzi right away. I wonder where Dr. Cassandra might be. A mind link comes through "Alex, are you ok? I heard about the rogue attack. Are you injured?" "I'm fine Chels, but I can't say the same about Kenzi. She saw me shift. I don't know if she will ever speak to me again" "Come on Alex, It can't be that bad" "Oh it's bad alright. She saw Chase kill a rogue a few feet from her face. I'm worried Chels. She was so terrified. And she wouldn't let me approach her. What should I do? I can't lose her" "You won’t lose her Alex. Where is she now?" "She was still in exam room 1 last time I checked" "YOU LEFT HER THERE ALONE!!!" "Don't need to yell at me, she asked me to okay!" "And you listened to her?" "What other choice did I have" "You could have stayed there and talked through everything with her. That poor girl must be so confused. I'm heading to the clinic right now. I'll be there in 5" she says as I feel the mind link sever. Maybe Chelsey might get through to her? Kenzi: It took me a few minutes to get myself together. My vision started to clear as my eyes started to dry off. I notice the warrior, still lying on the bed in one corner of the room. I was so focused on the wolves I had totally forgotten about him. I take a deep breath and shake off the numbness. I reach the bedside and quickly put the patient on a monitor, checking his vitals. His pressure was pretty high and his heartbeat was going too slow for my liking but at least he was still alive. I insert an I.V. catheter into his left elbow crease and start a saline drip. I then proceed to disinfect and wrap up his shoulder. There were some deep puncture wounds that I now presume came from a wolf like the one that lay dead by the door. I needed to turn him onto his stomach if I was to clean up the lacerations on his back. But this guy was built like a fridge. He was over 6 ft tall and all muscle. There was no way that little old me could turn him on my own. I would need to get some help. I also needed to get a doctor in here to check on him. He would probably need more medical care than I could offer, I was just a nurse after all. I step out into the hall. Things seem to have calmed down a little bit since the initial influx of patients, but it was still very crowded. I see Lexie a few doors down. "Hey Lexie, I need some help in here" "I'm kind of busy right now, can you find someone else?" "I'll help" A blond chick answers. I have never seen her before but beggars can't be choosers so I agree. Before heading back in I yell towards Lexie "If you see Dr. Sam or Dr. Cassandra, can you send them my way? My patient is in really bad shape" "will do" she replies as I head back into the exam room "I'm Chelsey by the way" the new girl tells me "Hi Chelsey, I'm Kenzi. Could you help me turn this patient around. I need to clean his back and there is no way I can turn him on my own. "sure thing" Me and Chelsey lean over the patient, grabbing the sheet on the other side. Pulling towards us we manage to rotate the patient without too much difficulty. "What now?" "I need to clean those wounds and bandage them up so they don't get infected. Some of these wounds seem pretty deep. He will probably need stitches" "Ok let me help" We spend the next 10 minutes working quietly, making sure to remove all the dirt and gravel from the man's torn up skin and covering it up with gauze, taping it in place. "So you must be my brother's mate. I have to admit I was expecting to find you curled up in a ball. You surprised me. I mean, it makes sense that as a lead warrior he would be mated to a strong female, but I never thought a human could be so resilient" "I'm sorry, what?" "OMG! I'm going too fast aren't I? I'm sorry. Alex is my big brother. Did he explain anything to you after he, you know, wolfed out?" "So I'm not going crazy, he really was that grey wolf?" "Well yeah, duh. Technically that's Chase's body but they are one and the same, he and Alex. Chase is the other half of Alex, his wolf half" " I think I need to sit down" "Here" she says as she approaches a chair I hadn't even noticed was in the room. “ I'll go fetch you some water and then I'll explain everything to you, If you want to of course" "uhm..Ok I guess" And with that she skipped away. Is she a werewolf like Alex? She seemed to know a whole lot about them and didn't seem phased by the fact her brother could turn into a grey wolf. How did she call him again? Chase? That name felt familiar to me for some reason. I wonder if she changes into a grey wolf too, maybe it ran in the family? Chelsey came bouncing back in. I don't know where she gets all that energy from. I was drained after today, and the day wasn't even over yet. "Here, drink some water. It will make you feel better. Oh and Dr. Cassandra said she would come by in a few minutes to check up on Fred. Dr. Sam is busy in the surgical unit." "Thanks" I chugged it in one go. I hadn't realized my throat was so dry until the water started soothing it on its way down. "Alright so where should I start?" " Are you a werewolf too?" "Yup, along with most of the town people. I shifted for the first time last year, on my 18th birthday" "Are you going to kill me now that I know your secret?" "Of course not silly, you're my brother's mate. I would never hurt you" "What does that mean, his mate?" "His better half, his soulmate" "I thought you said Chase was his other half" "Chase is his wolf half, you are half of his soul. Think of it as Chase being the brains and you being the heart. Alex needs the both of you to feel complete" "oh" was all I could answer as I was absorbing everything in. " I know it might not look that way, after what happened to you today, but this is a pretty peaceful town. You are safe here." "But all the injured today..." "Yeah, wolves like the one dead over there are called rogues. They are lone wolves that can become wild and unhinged. Some occasionally attack, like today. It's my brother's job as head warrior to keep them at bay, away from pack lands, especially the town. They don't normally attack as a group though, today was different for that reason. I don't know how one got in here though. I've never seen a rogue in town before." “Just my luck” “What do you mean?” “Last few weeks have been a lot.” I don’t know what made me tell her everything, from my shitty ex and this miracle baby, to the whole situation with Alex. Maybe I was still in shock, I don’t know, but my gut was telling me I could trust her. And talking to someone about all this felt rather freeing. It was nice having a girl friend after so long. I pretty much kept to myself in college, other than spending time with Steve and his friends. This felt rather nice. Shortly after, Dr. Cassandra showed up to stitch up the man on the bed, who I now knew as Fred. Before leaving Dr. Cassandra looks a me and says, “Come and find me before you leave for the night. I would like to check up on you and your baby, just to make sure” “That would be great. Thank you Dr. Cassandra” I say as I replace the bandages on Fred. Chelsey helps me turn him over, onto his back again. I check on his vitals one last time. Satisfied that he was stable I head towards the door. “How about we go to grab a drink as soon as your shift is over. I would love to get to know you some more and I could answer all your questions about my brother and werewolves in general” “Vodka cranberry sounds damn good right about now, but considering I’m pregnant, I don’t think it's advised” “How about we go grab some hot chocolate from Nicole’s? They also have some sandwiches at the coffee shop if you're hungry?” “yeah sure, sounds good” “What time do you finish work?” “I’m generally done by 4h30 but with everything that happened today I would have to check in with the others.” “Alright, I'll see you up front later. I’m going to go find my brother” “Thanks again Chelsey. I’ll see you later” I start checking up on the last of the patients. A few had left, after seeing Lexie and getting bandaged up. The waiting room was slowly emptying out, as me and Lexie went from one patient to another making sure everyone was patched up and would heal nicely. I was worried about letting them go so soon, some of them had some pretty big cuts, but Lexie reassured me that werewolves heal faster than humans and that they would all be fine, resting at home. Only one patient left to go, thank god, this day seemed to last forever. “I’ll take him, you go get checked by Dr. Cassandra” “Thanks Lexie” So I go in search of Dr. Cassandra, finding her in her office now that things had settled. She gave me a quick checkup, even though I told her I was fine. “How about we take a look at the baby then?” “Can you do that this early on in my pregnancy?” “Don’t go imagining a fully formed baby. It will look more like a blob on the screen. But we can check his heartbeat and make sure he is doing fine” “I would love that” “Alright go get settled on the bed and lift your shirt up for me.” I go to lie down and lift up my scrubs, exposing my belly. I wasn’t showing yet so my stomach was still flat. The doctor put some jelly on my stomach and moved the wand around. “Here, you see that black dot pulsating” she points at the screen “That's his heart. It's beating nicely. From these measurements I would say you are 10 weeks along. Set up an appointment in 2 weeks and we can do another checkup. For now, go get some rest.” “Thank you” I couldn’t help but let a single tear fall, this one of joy. My peanut was healthy and that was the best news I could ever get.
