The room was dimly lit, with only the soft glow of the bedside lamp illuminating the space. April paced back and forth, her mind racing with thoughts she couldn’t seem to silence. Her phone sat on the bed, the screen blank. She had called her father countless times the previous day, and each time, it had gone unanswered. “This is hopeless,” she muttered to herself, running a hand through her hair. She paused, staring at the phone as though willing it to ring. It didn’t. Her mother’s face flashed in her mind, the way she had smiled at her in the hospital, full of hope and relief. April swallowed hard, her throat tightening. She couldn’t fail her mother, not now. Taking a deep breath, she picked up the phone and tried calling her father again.
