CHAPTER 001 - MY SHAME
~ ALYSSA'S POV ~
I never wanted this for myself—to have my husband's eyes rake over me with a look of disgust.
Like I was nothing but a piece of garbage he wished to dispose of. Like I was just a burden on him.
But I was not, He was!
He was the reason why I took the role of the family's breadwinner and why I worked my ass off every day just to cater to our family that he was too slothful to cater to.
"I will ask you again, just in case you were too deaf to hear me the first time," My husband, Gabriel, lurched at my face,
I took a few steps back in fear that he might hit me like he always did,
"Where the f**k were you last night?" He questioned rashly,
I swallowed hard, "I was at work, Gabriel. I had a sudden late-night shi—"
"Don't lie, you dirty rat!" Gabriel's mother, Amelia, cut me off. Her tone was just as resentful and brutal as her son's "You were obviously at a man's house, you cheating w***e!"
"It's not like that, Mother. I had a lot of wor—" I veered my regards on her, meaning to explain myself but…
"Shut the f**k up, b***h!" Gabriel's hand flung across my face, giving me a stinging, hard slap on my cheek, and I instantly felt it bruised and burning red.
It was not the first time so it didn't hurt as much as it used to but I held my cheek anyway and stared at him with hurt and shock in my eyes,
He thrust towards me, pointing his finger at my face, "Don't you dare talk to my mother in that tone, you hear me?!" He thundered, "Do it again, and I will rip all of your hair out, disgusting woman!"
I didn't know what prompted me to suddenly be so bold but just as he was about to turn and maybe walk away, I grasped his arm and locked eyes with him,
"What do you want?!" He barked,
"I'm not feeling too well, I need some of my money to go to the hospital, please." I pleaded,
I felt ill and it had been like this for the past year. The discomfort and pain in my stomach were almost too much for me to bear but since no one took me seriously in this house, I was too scared to voice it out.
But recently, when the pain became unbearable and I had to stay at Meredith, my best friend's place, I told her all about it, and she suggested I go to the hospital for a check-up or something. But going to the hospital wasn't something so easy to do, as Gabriel had all of my money.
Gabriel's eyes didn't move from my face. I slightly veered my head to meet his eyes resting on the cheek he had slapped me on. Maybe he would feel just a little sympathy for me—but I knew him well enough and he never would.
He gasped like he couldn't believe what I had requested, "Your money? There is no money with me. I spent it all on the BMW car I bought yesterday!" He heaved with what seemed like pride,
My eyes widened in absolute shock,
"You—You bought a car? With my money?!" I struggled with the words because I still couldn't believe what I was hearing.
"Your money is my money, how many times do I have to say it to make it stick into that dull useless brain of yours!" He blasted, and turned to walk away again,
But I immediately reached out to grasp his arm for the second time. How can he think of leaving just like that? Like spending my own money on a car was no big deal?
Well, what did I expect?
It wasn't even his first time doing so! I was married to a lazy man who chose to stay at home all day and spend my own money that I worked f*****g hard for and was still not even allowed to spend unless it had to do with cooking for him and his mother.
"But, you…you should have told me first. It's my money, Gabriel. You should have asked for my permiss—"
"Just shut up already!" He reverberated before I could finish my sentence, his legs hit my stomach, sending me fleeing away across the room with a loud thud on the hard floor.
For the umpteenth time since I got married to him, my life flashed before my eyes.
And just then, my eyes rested on my daughter, Kinsley, running into the room, clutching the huge teddy bear that I had bought for her last fall to keep her company whenever I worked late hours since my husband and mother-in-law were too 'busy' to tend to her.
"Mummy, are you okay?" Kinsley asked, her big blue eyes fixed on me,
"I'm—I'm fine. Go back inside, Kinsley," My eyes were blurry with tears as I struggled to my feet.
Gabriel suddenly erupted into a loud evil laugh. I was still struggling to get up to my feet when he walked over to me, grabbed my hair, and yanked me to my feet, "Mother, take the little brat outside. Let me teach this w***e a lesson. It's been too long," He grunted, his hand still tightly gripping my hair.
I knew what was coming and my eight-year-old daughter knew it too by the sad look in her eyes. I gasped heartbrokenly when a tear dropped down from her eyes.
"Kinsley," I sobbed and watched as Amelia dragged her out by the collar of her clothes.
"Mummy!" Kinsley cried out just as the door slammed shut, and I closed my eyes, ready to accept my fate.
"I married you to be a wife, to care for this family, to respect and obey me! Not so you could question my authority, you w***e! You are just a slave, Alyssa. You are working for me! Your money belongs to me!" He roared, his hand still tightly and aggressively gripping my hair.
Because I knew that my power was zero compared to his, I freed myself and let him do whatever the hell he wanted to do. It wasn't the first time, the least his beating could do to me was to kill me.
And I probably shouldn't have thought of death, because just at that moment, he grabbed a wooden stool and hit my head with it.
I let out a shrieking sound of pain and collapsed to the ground, feeling the excruciating pain sinking in as my eyes slowly lost sight of light.
