~ ALYSSA'S POV ~
"Honey, are you okay?" The voice echoed in my head.
I felt an excruciating pain in my head as I struggled to open my eyes.
My body quivered with fear when I saw my husband, holding my hand and staring at me with tears in his eyes and with the most caring attitude I had ever seen him exhibit.
I glanced around and saw that I was in a hospital.
"Oh, it must have hurt so much. Thank God you are okay," Gabriel purred softly, running his hand through my hair.
I just lay there and said nothing because for a moment it felt like I was in another universe—a different universe where he was the best husband, and the tingling feeling in my heart was of love and not of fear.
Seeing the Doctor heading towards us, Gabriel's grip on my hair tightened as he lowered himself, "You better keep your mouth shut if you still want to live," He whispered in my ears. Then moved to my cheek and placed a loud kiss on it.
"Hello Mr. and Mrs. Burke," The Doctor finally reached us, beaming with a big smile.
"How are you feeling, Mrs. Burke?" The Doctor asked. He moved towards me and placed his hand on my bandaged forehead.
"She is perfectly fine and ready to head straight home, Doctor," Gabriel answered on my behalf,
"Alright," The Doctor smiled at Gabriel, then turned to me with a worried look on his face, "You don't look too good, Mrs. Burke. My assistant said she saw some bruises on your stomach. Can you tell me what caused that and the injury on your head?"
As I opened my mouth to speak, Gabriel jumped in again, "She is perfectly fine, Doctor. My wife can be very clueless and careless sometimes. I came back from work and saw her passed out at the bottom of the stairs. I rushed her here without even changing from my office clothes!" He released and motioned to his outfit.
Gabriel was dressed in a crumbled black suit with a tie, I guess after I collapsed, he roughly put that on before he brought me to the hospital because that wasn't what he was wearing before. And we had no stairs in our house! He had no job either! What the hell was he even talking about?!
The Doctor nodded with yet another smile that seemed forced this time. He turned to me and slightly bent towards me, "Would you like us to run a quick test on you just to confirm that you are totally fine and good to go?" He asked,
"Yes, please. Let's do that," I quickly beamed at the doctor before my husband could interfere again but his complaint came right after,
"Uh—Common, Honey. We are tight on money right now. Do you really think taking a stupid and useless test is the right thing to do in our situation? This hospital is only trying to steal our money!" Gabriel whined,
The Doctor heaved a loud sigh of resignation, and I watched his patience run dry on his face. "Alright then, goodbye, Mr. and Mrs. Burke," He uttered and immediately walked away.
I watched him go with sadness in my eyes. He motioned a nurse to come and discharge us, which she did, and soon we were out of the hospital, walking arm in arm.
It felt like I was walking on air, it was not only my head that hurt, I felt so dizzy that I could pass out at any moment. The part where he had kicked me on my stomach was equally painful, so much that my legs felt really feeble, and it was a struggle to walk at the same pace as him.
My whole body was burning, Gabriel could probably feel it as he was holding my hand but he didn't care and just kept forcing my feeble legs to walk with him.
My half-closed eyes rested on an old lady staring worriedly at me as she approached us,
"Is she okay to go home? She still looks very ill and so dead." The old lady let out,
"Mind your business, nosey b***h!" Gabriel spat at her without hesitation,
The old lady scurried off with fear in her eyes that my pathetic self equally felt so heartbroken for her.
"Are we walking home?" I asked when it seemed like we had been walking almost forever.
"Of course. I can't have a woman like you in my car to mess up the nice air in it," Gabriel released so nonchalantly,
His words shot painful dangers into my heart.
Gabriel wasn't always like this. Six years ago, in my last year in college, I got pregnant with his baby and had to drop out of school. He was the most loyal and loving boyfriend and I loved him with all my heart. In turn, I abandoned my dreams and lost my inheritance and my parents’ support just to be with him.
With how sweet Gabriel was then, I never expected that a day like this would come where I would constantly beg God to come to my aid and turn back the clocks of time so I could change my destiny from this wrathful disaster to the blissful life I had always dreamed of.
Finally, we reached home.
The moment we walked in, Gabriel dropped me to the ground without a care.
I landed with a loud thud and winced in pain as I felt my buttocks hurt so much.
"Uhhh! You are so heavy and yet I carried you all the way here! I deserve an award as the best husband to an ungrateful adulterous wife like you!" Gabriel uttered, walking past me on the floor to the kitchen, presumably to get a glass of water.
"Mummy!" I heard Kinsley call out, running towards me, I wrapped my arms around her.
"What happened to your head?" She cried out, touching the bandage.
"I will be fine," I replied, cleaning the tears from her eyes,
Gabriel's mother stepped out at that moment,
"That's what you get for cheating on your own husband!" She screeched,
I didn't bother to deny her accusations as I already knew it would be useless.
"Lock her in the store room for the rest of today. I don't want to see her disgusting face.” She told her son who was just stepping out of the kitchen.
Gabriel nodded, I watched with apprehension as he paced toward me and dragged me to my feet,
"No! No! Leave my mummy alone!!" Kinsley cried out, grasping her father's leg with her little hands.
