~ ALYSSA'S POV ~
Gabriel used his legs to shove Kinsley away from him. He dragged me to the store room, kicked the door open, threw me in like a sack of rice, and shut the door loudly. I heard the locks shuffling and his footsteps descending after he was done locking me up in the dark store room.
The first time this happened was five years ago, I was so scared that I started pounding loudly on the door and begging him to please let me out.
But this time, I heaved a sigh of relief and lay down on the cold floor. I cupped myself up with my knees above my stomach, and my arms wrapped around them. I closed my eyes wishing Kinsley was okay and that she wasn't crying too much.
The whole place fell into silence and I drifted to sleep.
It was around midnight when I jolted up after hearing a series of shuffling behind the door. I sat up and listened closely, the locks were opening. It was probably Gabriel. I frowned and quivered with fear wondering what he wanted at this time of the night.
But when the door pushed open, my heart dropped to my stomach when I saw who it really was.
"Kinsley, what are you doing—"
"Don't speak so loudly, Mummy," She immediately placed a finger to my mouth and slowly closed the door behind her.
My heart was leaping with fear and uneasiness. What if Gabriel and Amelia came here at this moment and saw that Kinsley had somehow managed to open the door? I would definitely get beaten to a pulp again, and Kinsley might suffer from a bit of his wrath too.
"Daddy is sleeping. He drank a lot and is sleeping so loudly in his bedroom. Grandma is sleeping too," Kinsley let out,
I listened to her, not knowing where she was heading.
Kinsley reached my hands and cupped them with hers, her pretty face curled up in a big smile, "Let's get out of here, Mummy," She released to my greatest shock,
My heart shrank into a tight knot in my chest, I didn't know a word like that could bring tears to my eyes, especially hearing it from my eight-year-old daughter,
I rubbed her hair with my hand and asked her what she meant,
My little baby smiled and said, "I know you are letting daddy beat you because of me, Mummy. I don't want to see you get hurt like that anymore, so please let's run away from here,"
I hated to admit to myself that what she said was the plain truth, and she was making so much sense, but if we ran away now, where on earth would we even go?
I had no money, Gabriel had all of my money with him. There was no place that we could go to if we escaped from here. We would be stranded and probably die of hunger if we dared to.
"Please, Mummy, Please. Daddy scares me, I don't want to stay here with him any longer. I just want to be happy with you!" Kinsley cried out,
I stared at her with tears in my eyes, shaking my head and gliding my hand down her hair, "We can't go anywhere, baby," I gave up,
I saw her eyes get even sadder and it broke my heart,
"I lied," She suddenly let out. At this moment, Kinsley didn't seem like an eight-year-old girl anymore. "Daddy isn't drunk and he is not sleeping. After he locked you in here, Daddy went out and came back with Aunty Meredith," She released with a blunt tone,
It took some time for her words to sink in. I slowly rose to my feet, feeling my head spinning. "What?!" I gasped out in a whisper,
"Mummy, it's been that way for long. Whenever you leave the house, Aunty Meredith would always drop by and go into Daddy's room, and then they would start laughing. Grandma would tell me that they were having a good time and would lock me in my room until she was gone."
I clasped both of my hands to my mouth, feeling like I was about to burst out with tears. I reached for the ground as even my weak legs couldn't handle the shocking revelations my daughter was spilling out to me.
Meredith was my best friend. She was everything to me, the only one who understood the suffering I was facing in my marriage and my biggest supporter who always encouraged me to bear it all just for the sake of my daughter.
I didn't know she was also part of my predicament. A typical green snake under the green grass.
I couldn't place a tag on what came over me, but at that moment, I was so determined to finally break free from the shackles of my marriage.
"When you were in the hospital with Daddy, Grandma fell asleep. So I secretly packed some of our things in a bag and placed it on the lower cabinet in the kitchen," Kinsley released again, adding even more shock to the ones I already had stuffed up in me. But, I was so proud of her. That was an unexpected thing for her to have done.
"Let's get out of here," I reached for her hand with a conclusion.
We walked out of the store room, our eyes glancing at every corner. Instead of going straight to the kitchen to get our bags and run away for the rest of our lives—I told Kinsley to wait for me in the kitchen alone while I decided to go to Gabriel's room to see for myself.
I was glad to see that his door was slightly open, I slowly pushed it open, and my curious eyes fell on them, completely naked.
My best friend, Meredith was lying on the chest of my husband, Gabriel, his arms wrapped around her, on our matrimonial bed.
That was all I needed to see. I didn't let myself break down there, I hastened my steps quietly to meet Kinsley in the kitchen. Already holding the bags and looking around for me.
I grabbed her hand and the bag. It took just a few seconds to carefully unlock the big front door and after I was done.
I took a final glance at the house I bought with my own sweat, blood, and tears. I smiled sadly at myself and walked out of the door with my daughter.
