CHAPTER 004 - MEETING THE COLD HELPER

1033 Words
~ ALYSSA'S POV ~ We were already a few steps away from the house in the freezing midnight air when Kinsley tugged at my shirt. I looked down at her with worry on my face. It was so dark that we couldn't even make out the road we were walking on. "What is it, baby?" "Let's take Daddy's car," She uttered, Uhh—I wish that was possible. How amazing would it be? I shook my head at her, feeling disappointed in myself, and told her that it wasn't possible. But the next words she uttered almost made me trip on my own legs, "The key is in the bag," Kinsley let out, "What?" My eyes flared up at her, "I took his key from his wardrobe while he was still with you at the hospital," She said, My eyes twitched with tears again, I dragged her in for a tight hug and patted her hair, telling her Well done. And I know it was properly wrong to appreciate her for doing something that felt like stealing but I couldn't help but feel so proud of her. I heaved a deep breath with determination in my eyes, knowing that driving the car out of the driveway was going to be a big hurdle. The headlights of the car were directly facing the windows of his room, and that could wake him up, which would really be bad. But for our sake, I had to take that much risk. I reached for the key in my bag and walked towards the car with Kinsley. We successfully got into the car. Thank God I could drive. I held my breath and turned the engine of the car on, the headlights flared on. I wrestled with the steering wheel and veered the car to the other direction, and on the road, away from the house, at speed. I had no idea if Gabriel had woken up to the sound of the car but I gave no concern about it. We were far away from the house and we were safe. Kinsley was happy; she was giggling and jumping excitedly in her seat, and my heart broke when I heard her scream, "We are free!" *** The sky was bright already, and I had been driving for five hours now. We crossed the borders of the city and into a new city about two hours ago but I still kept driving. I didn't want to leave Gabriel with any chance of finding us. If I had just enough money, we would have flown out of the country but all I had was this car and the grace of it to take keep us moving long enough to take us to a new and safe place where we would get to finally start a new life— a blissful life like I so desired. But it took me by surprise when the car suddenly screeched to a stop and the screen signaled that the fuel was all used up and needed to be refilled. With worry on my face, I glanced at Kinsley fast asleep in the backseat. I could see a filling station at the far end but I had no single money to get any fuel. I even started to ransack through the shelves in the car but Gabriel had no money in it. We were stuck in the middle of the road with no houses in sight, but only a filling station, which was even like a thousand miles away. I climbed down from the car and began to wave at the passing cars for help but none of them stopped. I kept on doing the same thing until it was night again. I would wave at every passing car and look back at Kinsley staring sadly at me. It suddenly started raining heavily but I refused to get into the car, I kept on waving to the other cars for help—and finally one of them stopped. The driver peeked at me, "Do you need help?" He yelled at the top of his voice so I could hear me, I was wet and shivering already, I nodded and paced towards him, "Did your car break down?" I heard him ask again, and I nodded. And immediately, he stepped out of the car and came to me. The rain was hitting hard on both of us. I told him about Kinsley in the backseat and he helped with her while I grabbed our bags and the car key and followed him to the car without question. He put Kinsley in the front seat and motioned for me to get in the back seat. It was only after I got in that I saw that there was someone else in the car. My heart leaped with fear as I really wasn't expecting to see anyone else. "That's my boss. I'm just following his orders to help you both," The driver declared and began driving. I instantly glanced back at the man, he was young yet he looked so dangerous, wearing a deep frown on his face that literally sent chills down my body. "Don't mind the frown he has on, that's just his resting face," The driver added with a grin. That was enough to bring down the uneasiness that had crept into my body. "Thank you so much for helping us, Sir." I bowed my head slightly, He didn't say anything. I gazed up at him and saw that he was staring at the spot I was sitting on, and so much water was dripping down from my clothes. I instantly felt guilty. "I'm so sorry about this, I will clean it up once I get down," I bowed my head, again. I saw him nod, still wearing a frown on his face, "He will come back to get the car for you," He said, his voice deep and barely audible. I felt relieved by that and nodded with a smile at him. He looked away as if irritated by the smile. I sat back on the seat. I had no idea where we were going, but at least we were safe. For now.
