A Strange Scent

554 Words
Derek stands on the balcony of the Alpha House, unable to sleep after hearing his wolf's warning that an enemy has already entered the pack. The village below is peaceful, but Derek senses something is wrong. A cold wind carries a faint scent he has never encountered before. Mason:"You haven't slept. Derek: "Something crossed our borders... and it isn't gone." Mason: "We'll find it." Derek: "No. It wants to be found." The two friends decide to investigate before sunrise. Derek, Mason, and six elite warriors follow the unfamiliar scent through thick woods. The trail moves strangely, disappearing and reappearing as though someone is deliberately hiding it. Broken branches, claw marks, and patches of black fur are scattered along the path. One warrior kneels. "It ends here." Derek shakes his head. "No... someone erased the trail." His wolf growls, sensing powerful magic. The mysterious scent leads toward a small human settlement on the edge of Moon Valley. The Alpha orders his warriors to remain hidden. For years the pack has protected the humans without revealing their existence. Among the villagers is Emily Hart, a young woman who works at her grandmother's bakery. She is known for her kindness and bravery, though she has always felt she never truly belonged in the village. As she leaves the bakery carrying fresh bread, a gentle breeze blows through the street. At that exact moment, Derek catches her scent. His wolf suddenly becomes restless. "She's different..." Derek watches silently from the trees but says nothing. Emily walks home through a forest path. Without warning, a frightened horse breaks free from a wagon and charges toward her. She freezes. Before the horse can strike, Derek rushes from the trees. With incredible strength, he grabs the horse's reins and calms the animal. Emily stares at the stranger.Emma: "You... saved me." Derek: "You should avoid this road alone." Emily: "I don't think I've seen you before." Derek: "I'm just passing through." Before she can ask another question, Derek disappears into the forest. Emily watches him leave, unable to explain why she feels strangely connected to him. Not far away, a hooded figure watches the meeting from behind a massive oak tree. He speaks quietly to himself. Unknown Spy: "So the Alpha has finally found her." The spy disappears into the shadows before anyone notices him. That evening, Derek tells Mason about the strange encounter. Mason: "You think she's your mate?" Derek: "I've never believed in destiny." Mason: "Do you believe it now?" Derek remains silent for a long moment. Derek: "My wolf has never been wrong." Mason smiles. "Then the Moon Goddess has chosen." As night falls, one of the border guards sounds the alarm. A patrol has disappeared. Derek races to the scene with his warriors. They discover broken weapons, bloodstains, and deep claw marks on the trees. But there are no bodies. Only a chilling message carved into a large rock: "The Alpha's mate belongs to us" Derek clenches his fists, realizing someone already knows about Emily—and is planning to use her against him. Standing beneath the full moon, Derek vows to protect the mysterious human woman he has just met. Unseen in the darkness, the red-eyed beast watches from a nearby ridge, its low growl echoing through the valley as the hunt for the Alpha's mate begins.
