Chapter 4

1151 Words
Mrs. Casanova noticed that the lady with James wore the same gown Benita wore on her wedding day. This might be a coincidence, she thought. She cannot be Benita. “Are you by chance bearing Benita, too?” she asked. “Granny, I’m Benita, your granddaughter,” Benita said, hoping she would believe her. Her body had changed so much. Mrs. Casanova looked at her with surprise. “You don’t resemble her, yet you sound like her. How come?” “A doctor from the best hospital in Eldraldor treated me for free.” “How did you want me to believe this?” She looked at James. “You will suffer in my hands and in prison if you don’t tell me where Benita is. Any doctor who wants to treat Benita would visit me first?” Benita felt overwhelmed. The person Granny is looking for is right before her. But who would believe the truth? How did Doctor Lena even know her new address? Doctor Lena only told her they saw her pictures on social media. She didn’t tell Benita how they knew her new house. Benita looked at James with a confused countenance, as if he should say something. James cleared his throat. “Our wedding pictures went viral on social media. I don’t know who secretly snaps us. It’s possible the doctor asked people for Benita’s new address. And I also see the news about Benita receiving free treatment.” Mrs. Casanova told Linda to check online whether it was true. Linda didn’t bother to search for the pictures because she was the one who posted them. She simply searched for the news, and what she found made her raise her eyebrows in shock. “It is true, Granny. I see it.” At that moment, a knock came from the door, and Mrs. Casanova hurriedly opened it. Three ladies and two men greeted Mrs. Casanova politely and with smiles. “What can I do for you?” she asked with curiosity. “We’re journalists from the Daily Chronicle. And I am Reporter Rosalie. We’d like to follow Benita Casanova’s treatment progress,” one lady in a white suit said. Now it fully dawned on Mrs. Casanova that the pretty lady with James was Benita. Not quite knowing what to say, she opened the door wide and smiled back. “Come in and have your seat.” She quickly grabbed Benita’s hand, took her from James’s side and made her sit beside her. Linda quickly sat beside Benita too and wore a beautiful smile in the presence of the journalists. Benita felt somehow because James stood alone, and she wanted to stand, but Mrs. Casanova pulled her back. “You have visitors from the Daily Chronicle. Respect and give them your attention.” James winked at her to show he didn’t mind standing alone. “James, can you please wait outside?” Mrs. Casanova asked. Benita felt bad. “Granny-” “He is distracting you and is not worth it to stay in this meeting.” She cuts in. “It’s fine, dear. I will wait outside,” James said and hurried out. Benita let out a heavy sigh and hated that she was there. “Please. Who is that man to Mrs. Benita? Is he her husband?” Reporter Rosalie asked while one man brought out a camera to record Benita’s talks. “Not at all. They are friends. He is here to check on her. My Benita is single,” Mrs. Casanova quickly said with a fake grin. Benita wore a confused countenance. Granny forced her to marry James and made them sign a marriage certificate so that it would be difficult for him to divorce her. How could Granny easily deny James? Reporter Rosalie asked Benita about her experience during the treatment. And she explained how she had felt before and after the treatment. She mentioned everything except her husband. And that pained her. She couldn’t bring herself to tell the truth since Granny had already lied that she was single. Not long after the journalists had left, Mrs. Casanova went outside to meet James and stretched her phone to him. “Type your phone number.” James did curiously and gave her back. “I will call you when the divorce papers are ready. And don’t ask me why, because you are not blind. You can see many differences between you and Benita. You don’t worth to be her husband.” “She didn’t complain about me. Love matters than anything else.” “Your mentality is as poor as you are. It is useless and a waste of time to explain how failure you are.” Benita came from behind, wondering why Granny was insulting her husband. “What is wrong?” she asked. “She wants me to divorce you. She said I don’t worth to be your husband,” James said. Mrs. Casanova faced Benita. “Look at him. Did he deserve you?” Benita sighed deeply. “That doesn’t matter.” “Do you know what matters?” Mrs. Casanova raised her voice. “Aren’t you tired of shame?” “Granny, you can’t understand.” “I don’t want to understand because you are not in your right mind. You have tarnished our family name enough. I will make sure you divorce him. And I don’t want to hear anything from you.” Mrs. Casanova then looked at James. “I will call you when the divorce papers are ready. Leave now before my men wound you.” “The problem is you don’t know who I am,” James said. “You should be happy I willingly choose to marry your granddaughter. I’m rich and famous. Your family can’t afford to lose me.” Benita felt disappointed in what he said. Must he boast in vain before Granny, too? This is the time to break down before Granny to see maybe she would change her mind. Mrs. Casanova looked at him with disdain. “I won’t argue with you. Take care of yourself first with the money you claim you have before you can take care of someone else. You will hate yourself if I meet you outside.” Benita wanted to say something, but tears slipped down her face instead. She lost her strength and watched as the old Mrs. Casanova pushed her inside. “You will regret it if you take a step out.” Anger surged within James, and he left the house in peace because he didn’t want Mrs. Casanova’s men to touch him. He might not control himself if they attack him. He didn't want to send anyone to hell in that hour. Not long after entering a cab, his phone chirped. It was a message from the King of Eldraldor. James hissed and ignored the message like a wrong number.
