KIAN'S POV
I rolled my eyes at the interaction I just had with Daxton. I walked out of the room feeling in control and I liked it. Befriending Daxton was tough, I hated his guts but I was willing to tolerate him. Although, he seemed weird and a bit stifled just now.
He was against us taking his phone away, it was not a big deal but it seemed like one to him. I was beginning to suspect that there was something in that phone which he didn't want us to know. I shrugged the thought off.
The hallways were empty aside from Ophelia who was standing just a few feet from me. She looked very worried.
"Hi, Kian." She said nervously. I smiled in response. "Were you able to get any information from Daxton?" She threw the question with sprang brows.
"Yes, I did." I said shoving my hands into my pockets.
"Well?" she urged me to continue, "What was it?"
"Surprisingly, Daxton was able to get a picture of the plate number of the car when the children were being kidn*pped. We will print it out and use it to track down the car. It's a good lead. I have Mark and Jasper on it now." I explained in an attempt to ease her worries.
She bobbed her head in satisfaction. "It is a good lead, a very good one. This is a big step in getting my children back. My poor babies, who knows what they've been going through?" She began wringing her hands and chewing on her lower lip. She was tense.
I placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder, "You do not have to worry." She raised her eyes to meet mine and I gave her the most reassuring smile I could muster. "I will do everything I can to find our children. Calm your mind, Ophelia." We held eye contact for a minute and it seemed like I could see her soul. After all these while I thought I didn't have feelings for this woman, I was wrong. All my emotions came rushing back to me. I had feelings for this woman. I always have had these feelings and I would never understand why I rejected her in the first place.
"Alpha Kian!" A shout echoed off the walls. Ophelia stepped away and I drew my hand back on impulse. The shout shattered whatever it was that was forming between us in that single minute. All the feels in between dissipated in a second.
"Alpha Kian!" The shout came again and I turned to see who it was. It sounded urgent. A guard came running towards us.
The guard seemed tired, he was staggering. It was as if he had been running for a long while now.
When the guard reached us, he collapsed on his knees. He was panting. He was struggling to say something in between catching his breath, it was coming out incoherently.
I knelt beside him. The guard was looking at me like I was the oxygen he needed in his lungs. As his alpha I gave him a command, "Speak!" And that exact moment he began speaking. His wolf wouldn't dare disobey me.
"There is an attack. A huge attack is happening at the eastern border. Your attention is needed there urgently, your majesty."
I frowned. An attack was happening and I didn't sense it? I wasn't duly informed even. What was happening?
The guard was managing himself back to his feet. "Come with me your majesty. Come."
"Who is behind this attack? Do you know?"
The guard nodded fervently like his life depended on it. "Yes. Yes. It is Alpha Xavier."
A gasp came from Ophelia, she was surprised. I threw her a quizzical look, "do you know this alpha?"
She didn't react. I repeated but with my voice raised a bit. "Ophelia, do you know this alpha?"
She nodded sheepishly. "Yes. I know Alpha Xavier. He accommodated me for a year when I ran away. I found out I was pregnant and I stayed in his pack till I gave birth before I left."
"Firstly, you said you gave birth in the human world earlier."
Ophelia stared at me like a deer caught in the headlights. She cleared her throat, "I lied. It didn't seem worth mentioning. Nothing significant happened within that one year that was why I failed to mention it."
I narrowed my eyes on her. Would I ever understand this woman in front of me? Just when I think I have her all figured out she throws another puzzle at me to throw me off balance.
"Why did you leave his pack? If he was that hospitable, why didn't you just stay back and become a member of the pack?"
Ophelia swallowed, looking away, "He was making advances. He wanted to get married to me and was making it known. I couldn't fulfill his wishes, I didn't want to get married to him. I rejected him and he sent me away." She continued, meeting my eyes this time. "I had to leave his pack and find a life with my three babies in hand. It was tough but I did it. I then moved to the big city and built a life for me and my children."
When Ophelia finished I felt a wave of anger overtake me. I grit my teeth trying to stifle my anger. The next wave of emotion was guilt. Half of her problems today were my fault. I rejected her as a mate robbing her of any kind of peace or happiness or content one would feel when mated and like that was not enough, I went ahead to get her pregnant. I made my pack inhabitable for her and that was why she ran off in the first place. It was my fault.
I finally spoke up, "Ophelia. Get back to your room and keep yourself safe." She nodded, lingering only but for a moment before she disappeared off to her room.
I turned to the guard, "Take me to where this attack is taking place.”
