CHAPTER ONE: THE GIRL NOBODY NOTICES
Rain tapped softly against the hospital windows as midnight settled over the city. Inside Saint Aurelius Private Medical Center, the world felt strangely quiet. The expensive hallways glowed beneath dim golden lights while exhausted nurses moved silently between rooms. Most people who entered the hospital came with entourages, luxury flowers, or family members dressed in wealth. But Room 1907 remained almost forgotten. No visitors. No media. No attention. Only a girl dressed in a simple oversized hoodie sat beside the hospital bed, her tired eyes fixed on the weak man sleeping quietly beneath white sheets. Nina Castillo gently adjusted the blanket over her father’s chest before checking the heart monitor again. Steady. For now. A small breath escaped her lips. “You scared me today,” she whispered softly. The man lying in the bed looked far older than his actual age. Illness had hollowed his cheeks and weakened the once powerful figure he used to be. The oxygen tube beneath his nose only made him appear more fragile. Yet even unconscious, he still carried an aura that felt commanding. Dangerous. Important. The kind of presence powerful men spent years trying to imitate. But nobody in the hospital asked questions anymore. Not after strict confidentiality agreements had been signed months ago. The staff only knew two things: The patient in Room 1907 was unbelievably wealthy. And the girl caring for him was willing to destroy anyone who leaked information about him. Nina reached for the cup of untouched tea beside the bed, only to realize it had already gone cold. Again. She smiled faintly to herself. That happened often these days. She barely slept anymore. Between hospital visits, part-time work, and trying to survive the emotional distance growing between herself and Lucas Sterling, exhaustion had become a permanent part of her body. Still, she never complained. Complaining changed nothing. A soft knock interrupted the silence. The door opened carefully before an older nurse stepped inside. “Miss Castillo?” Nina immediately looked up. “Yes?” The nurse lowered her voice respectfully. “Your father’s medication has been adjusted again. The doctor wants to monitor him closely tonight.” Nina nodded calmly even though tension tightened inside her chest. “Thank you.” The nurse hesitated slightly before speaking again. “You should rest too.” Nina glanced toward her sleeping father. “I’m fine.” It was always the same answer. The nurse gave her a sympathetic look before leaving quietly. Once the door shut again, silence returned. Nina leaned back in the chair slowly and rubbed her tired eyes. Her phone vibrated against the table. Lucas. For a second, warmth softened her expression. She answered immediately. “Hello?” But instead of Lucas’s voice, loud music echoed through the phone first. Laughter. Glasses clinking. Voices from an expensive party. Then finally “Nina.” Lucas sounded distracted. Cold. Like someone speaking out of obligation rather than affection. Her smile faded slightly. “Are you still at work?” she asked gently. “Mhm.” That single response told her everything. He was annoyed already. Nina lowered her gaze. “You said you’d come tonight.” A pause followed. Then Lucas sighed quietly. “I got busy.” Busy. Again. Nina stared at the rain sliding down the window. “It’s okay,” she whispered. But it wasn’t. Lately, everything between them felt different. Calls became shorter. Texts became colder. Promises disappeared. And somehow, she always ended up alone. “You sound tired,” Lucas said absentmindedly. Nina almost laughed softly at that. Of course she was tired. She spent her nights inside hospital rooms while trying desperately to hold together a relationship that felt like it was quietly slipping through her fingers. Still, she said: “I’m okay.” Another lie. Lucas remained silent for a moment before speaking again. “There’s an important corporate gala tomorrow night.” Nina blinked slowly. “A gala?” “Yes. My father wants me there.” Something about his tone made uneasiness settle inside her stomach. Then he added: “Celeste Harrington will be attending too.” The silence after those words felt heavy. Celeste Harrington. Beautiful. Wealthy. Elegant. Everything high society adored. Nina had met her twice before. Twice was enough. Celeste’s smiles were always sharp enough to cut. “You should come too,” Lucas said finally, though it sounded more like obligation than desire. Nina looked down at her worn sleeves. She didn’t belong in places like that. Not beside Lucas anymore. Still… “I’ll come,” she answered softly. “Good.” Another pause. Then: “I have to go.” Before Nina could say anything else, the line disconnected. She stared at the darkened phone screen quietly. No goodnight. No I miss you. Nothing. Only distance. The room suddenly felt colder. Nina swallowed the ache rising inside her chest before standing slowly. She walked toward the window overlooking the glowing city skyline below. Luxury towers lit the darkness beautifully. Somewhere out there, Lucas was probably standing beside people who belonged in his world. People like Celeste. Not girls sitting in hospitals wearing cheap hoodies and hiding exhaustion behind weak smiles. Nina closed her eyes briefly. Maybe she really was becoming a burden to him. Behind her, the weak voice of her father suddenly broke the silence. “You’re crying again.” Nina turned instantly. Alejandro Castillo was awake. Her expression softened immediately as she rushed back toward the bed. “You should be resting.” Alejandro studied her quietly. Even sick, his eyes remained terrifyingly sharp. “That boy disappoints me.” Nina forced a small smile. “He’s just busy.” Alejandro’s expression darkened faintly. “Power reveals people’s true nature.” Nina adjusted his blanket again carefully. “You always say things like that.” “Because you refuse to listen.” Silence settled between them briefly. Then Alejandro reached weakly for her hand. “You deserve better than being ignored.” Emotion tightened inside Nina’s throat. She squeezed his hand gently. “It’s fine.” “No,” he said quietly. “It isn’t.” The machines beside the bed beeped softly in the silence. Alejandro watched his daughter carefully. The exhaustion beneath her eyes. The sadness she tried hiding. The quiet way she carried pain without complaint. It reminded him painfully of Isabella. Isabella Castillo had smiled like that too before the world destroyed her. A dangerous coldness flickered briefly behind Alejandro’s eyes. If he had more time… If his body had not betrayed him… Nobody would dare hurt his daughter. Nobody. Nina noticed his breathing becoming uneven again and immediately pressed the nurse call button. “Don’t stress yourself,” she said softly. Alejandro looked at her for a long moment before speaking again. “One day,” he whispered weakly, “they will regret underestimating you.” Nina smiled sadly. Nobody underestimated her because nobody noticed her at all. And somehow… That hurt even more.
