Aime POV
I had always loved the outdoors and looking up at the night sky. I guess I got this way from my parents. They loved to take me on camping trips all the time and we would often stay up to look at the stars. That was true until I was 6 yrs old. My parents were doctors in the human towns, we always moved around, but from time to time we would settle for a few months and they would always take me on camping trips. The last time I saw them was when they left on a ski trip. They said they could not take me this time around, but would come back with a surprise, I never saw them again. They were trapped by an avalanche and their bodies were never recovered. Luckily, my grandma took over my guardianship, that is until she also passed away. I never truly found out what happened to her. I was 19 at the time and going to nursing school in another town. One night I just received a call that she was found dead at home by one of her friends.
Although I knew what I was, I grew up amongst humans. I was taught by my parents to control my superhuman abilities and act as any other human. They never stopped me from being myself, but they preferred no one knew what we were. From my parents and my grandma I learned a great deal about what life as a werewolf was and what life in a pack should be. They really never talked about their life before me when they were still in a pack, and I never truly had the chance to ask.
I am now 22 and working as a psych nurse in the town hospital. I do not have many friends, in fact I only truly spend time with Nancy and her boyfriend Alec. They are actually both humans. Alec used to be my boyfriend until I caught him cheating on me with Nancy. To be quite honest, I was not really upset about it, I knew about the mate bond and most of my actual relationships with humans were superficial. Plus, I like to think it was because of me those two love birds found each other. Unlike werewolves and the mate bond, human love is a little more complicated and they always seem to have trouble recognizing their soulmates when they find them. It’s almost as if they are programmed for self sabotage. Either way, I grew to love them all the same.
I never really thought about finding my mate but grandmother was looking forward to me finding him. She told me the bond was sacred and I should always trust it. She told me he would be the perfect match for me. Unfortunately, there were no werewolves in the towns, so I was sure I would never find him.
After Alec, I have only dated another human, his name is Jake. I really did enjoy dating Jake, at least at first. We had so much in common and we got along great. Until one night, about four months ago, a night I don’t really care to remember. I am not sure how he got me drunk, which was rare for me as I have a great alcohol tolerance. I guess it is a wolf thing, but he managed somehow. That night would be the first time I would be intimate with a guy, but instead of being the amazing experience everyone hyped it up to be, it was a nightmare I wish I could forget.
When I sobered up I woke up in Jake’s bed sore all over. There were bruises throughout my body, my neck, and my wrists. I had bite marks, scratch marks, and burns all over me. The pain that radiated from my private parts was worse than any pain I had ever felt. Normally because of my wolf I would heal pretty fast, but it took me 1 week to heal and I couldn’t sense Anya, my wolf, at all.
After this incident, I tried to avoid him, but he continued to seek me out and began to stalk me to the point he would show up at my work. Because I am werewolf I did not want to seek medical attention or seek out the police. I could not risk humans knowing what I was. In order to get away from him, I decided to take a camping trip to the mountains for a week. At least I knew, or hoped he would not follow me there.
Today is my last day of camp, so I decided to get up early and explore. I decided to head up a couple miles into the forest to a nearby lake. It had been a pleasant hike and now I was sitting on a rock some feet above the lake. I was enjoying the fresh air when I heard rustling behind me. It was a tall werewolf. He looked disheveled and a little out of breath. He had brown hair and blue eyes and fair skin. He stared at me with a panicked look, I guess he knew what I was too. My attention drifted to his leg. It seemed he had a pretty bad cut with something purple oozing off of it. I offered my help, the moment he heard me speak he became more calm. Luckily, I was taught how to heal by my grandma and my parents.
Because the wound of his leg was not healing quickly enough, I assumed it had to had been scratched with something that prevented his wolf from helping him heal. I quickly cleansed and dressed it. He seemed to be grateful for that. He told me his name, Trevor, and he left. I sat back down to enjoy the view. I was in no hurry to get back to camp.
Suddenly I smelled rain, the awesome smell of wet dirt, it was such a calming smell, but there were no clouds in the sky. A few minutes passed and I heard more rustling behind me. At first I thought it may be Trevor coming back, but to my surprise it was a huge black wolf. His fur was thick and shiny, it almost seemed magical, like it glittered gold with the light. His eyes were a deep blue. He was gorgeous. As he stared at me all I heard was ‘mate’ in my head. Anya had found her mate. I panicked, I did not know what to do, so I walked backwards, lost control of my body, and then pain and darkness took over.
