The Elders

Layla Whispercrest Harald was resistant... He didn’t want to put me at harm’s way. By bringing me to Melody, he told me she’d become aware that I conspired everything. I told him not to worry about that. “The Luna approaches, pay your respects.” an announcer said. I watched as the prisoners around bared their neck in submission. Slowly, I made my way to Melody’s cell with my eyes right on her. On sighting me she folded her hands with a confident look. I stared at her frizzy curls, which was like Andrea’s, my ex-friend. To think this was why I trusted her in the first place. “Such insolence! Pay your respects to the Luna!” Harald yelled at her. But she smiled without an ounce of respect on her face. “Over my dead body. I won’t do that and if death is what I must take for this, I will accept it gladly.” she muttered. “Harald can you please wait outside?” I told him and that minute he stared with a confused look on his features. “Will you be fine, luna? Just say the words and we would lash her 200 strokes of silver.” “Yes.” I said. “I’ll be. Just give me a moment to talk to her, please.” “As you wish.” he said. He strode out that moment passing the cell guards and closing the door behind him. Melody stared at me viciously the minute he left. “What do you want from me? You used your authority to punish me already, aren’t you satisfied with that?” she seethed. “For once I thought I had a friend, you know. The way you acted caring like some seemingly sweet soul. Who knew I was close to something else, perhaps a devil?” I returned. She began chuckling that instant. So loud that I wished I brought an ear pad. “Devil? The only devil is the man you call your mate. The devil here is the man who murdered my husband and made my father flee. Alpha Jaxon Creed.” she seethed once more. “Your father was given a sentence because he conspired to harm the alpha. From what I’m guessing your husband is guilty as well. He was part of the elders, wasn’t he?” “What we fought for was the greater good. The Alpha isn’t suitable to lead us. He is a monster, but what would you know?” My wolf wished to come out that instant. She wanted to defend our mate. I stopped her knowing it wasn’t the answer. “Alpha Jaxon is no monster.” “For someone that killed 99 elders? You surely should re-check, Layla.” I hadn’t been aware they were up to that number. They were too much. I didn’t want to show that I cared in front of her though. With this thought, I smiled. “If they didn’t conspire against him, they wouldn’t be dead by now.” I could not believe I was saying a word I didn’t mean. Maybe this was better than being taken advantage of. “You filthy witch,” she muttered. “I’ll surely get back at you for uttering those words. You are surely going to die!!” I noticed her eyes became swelling red. Her fangs bared at me and every vein in our body was prevalent. Melody ran to the prison hitting it hardly only for the silver linings to burn her. I watched as she cried out in pain. She then wore a look of hatred staring at me. “Look at you, with these threats. Have you thought of what will happen if I let the Alpha know of what you tried to do?” I asked her. “I’m not scared of you or your mate, Layla.” she said bearing a scowl on her face. My wolf wanted to surface again, but I kept her at bay once more. I immediately faced opposite direction walking to the exit. I was wrong. She was nothing like Andrea. Melody was far from being sweet. She didn’t have a heart of gold. She wasn’t that soul I should be with, instead she was a fake. A fake with evil priorities in mind. I wondered what made me think I had a friend. I made a mistake. A big one. “Are you good, luna? Please let me know if I should commence with the punishment if she annoyed you,” Harald said. “Sure I am, it’s fine. She behaved well.” I said to him with a slight smile. “Are you sure?” he questioned once more. “Of course.” “Okay,” he replied. “We should head to your room then.” I nodded at him and we commenced striding. That instant, a flash of Melody’s words imprinted my mind. “Alpha Jaxon is no monster.” “For someone that killed 99 elders? You surely should re-check, Layla.” she had said. I was his mate yet there were some things I didn’t know about him. It made me wonder a lot. “Harald how many elders tried to murder the alpha?” I inquired with a curious glance at him. “100 in total. However, one escaped who turned out to the Garrison, may I ask why you ask, my luna?” he responded. I couldn’t say the actual reason. How did I say I asked because I thought of the alpha to be a monster? “Getting the actual facts is indeed necessary, I must say. It makes me understand the pack better.” I said with a smile, and he nodded. “Oh, that’s pretty interesting my luna.” Harald replied. Little did he know that I currently had second thoughts on the whole of this. Luckily, we were at the front of my room door so I nodded to him and the second guard in front of the door before walking in. I took little steps to the dresser with shaky hands. Did he actually eliminate 99 elders? If this was true then I might be mated to someone dangerous. Perhaps a monster. This was all shades of cruelness. I couldn’t imagine how one person did that in a go. Alpha Jaxon was surely talented at making me question everything around me, maybe this was why I hadn’t fully settled around him. “I’m scared.” I muttered with searching eyes as I looked around for ideas on what to do. Back at home, we lived in harmony. Apart from the recent mating knowledge I got, Silvermoon was a great pack. This knowledge somewhat made me wish I met my mate in my original pack. …
