CHAPTER SIX

2383 Words
ATHENA’s POV For the next few days, I lie on the hospital bed like a zombie. Receiving my treatment and not having any visitors. When doctor Seth asked if I wanted visitors, I did not respond and I am glad he didn’t wait for my answer before making that decision. I genuinely can not deal with anyone right now. I can’t even look at anyone at the moment. What Stefan did to me, I am not sure I will be able to heal from it. I haven’t said a word in three days, it’s like my voice box decided to disappear and leave me hanging. No matter how I look at it, my life is over and not even the goddess can help me this time around. The door pushes open and the doctor walks in alongside a nurse. This is what he has been doing for the past three days. Come to check on me, administer a few drugs and repeat the cycle the very next day. “Good morning, Athena.” He greets, halting beside the bed but I don’t say anything to him. I just keep staring into nothingness. “How do you feel today?” He asks again and I remain mute. The only thing I want is for him to do what he has come to do and go away. He has seen me in the worst state possible in the past few days and I want to erase that. “Should I administer the medication, doctor?” The nurse beside him asks but he nods in the negative much to my amazement. The last time I actually spoke to him was when I begged him to help me. I didn’t know what I was begging for but I wanted him to help me so bad. He had asked what I wanted and that was when I went mute. I couldn’t bring myself to say anything right now. “She doesn’t need it,” he says again, “if she does, she will say it” I slowly turn my head to him, my eyes searching his. What exactly is he driving at right now? I just want to be left alone but it seems this man has other things in his mind. “Do you want the medicine, Athena?” He goes ahead to ask again but I don’t move, I just keep staring like he is some kind of alien. “Answer me,” he cajoles, “say something.” I open my mouth but no words come out, it’s like I can’t even recognize myself anymore. “Leave us,” he finally orders and the nurse nods before making her way out of the room. For a few minutes, the silence in the room somehow becomes haunting. I want him to speak again, make me forget about the nightmare that is slowly creeping into my mind. “No one has come to see you since I moved you here,” he finally starts to speak again,so I am guessing they do not really care about you or your baby, Athena.” I want to tell him it’s a lie that they will come. But I know it’s not and the truth is a hard pill to swallow. Six years of my life and I was still not accepted, even my own family has not called. I can make an excuse for my step mother because she never pretended to like me once but my father? The man who gave birth to me. He never called, he never even showed up. A scoff leaves my mouth as realization dawns on me, I mean nothing to any of them. They have been shouting it loudly for a long time, I just chose to put a deaf ear to it. “Do you know what happens when you die?” His next question hit me like a rock. This time he isn’t looking like the doctor Seth I know, there is something mysterious and dangerous emanating from him. “Maybe a day or two, they pretend to grieve you and that’s it. The world will move on. Your husband and his mistress will get married and forget about you. She will give birth to a baby for him and yours will not even be talked about.” He pauses for a few seconds, watching me like he is waiting for me to acknowledge his statement but I don’t move, I just continue staring at him. “You will be forgotten, Athena and there will be no evidence that you actually lived. If not for yourself, think about your baby. I will come back to administer your medicine later but then, you have to tell me what your choice is.” He doesn’t wait. He pulls his body off the chair and makes to leave but my hand works faster than my mind. I grab onto his hand and he turns around. “I— For the first time in three days, I speak. The voice sounds foreign but it’s mine and I am not even afraid of it—I am only scared of what could happen after now. “I want to go home,” I manage to tell him and for a few seconds, he keeps looking. If he is disappointed, I am not sure because his gas remains expressionless. “You want to go home?” Seth goes ahead to ask and I nod. “Yes, please.” I don’t know the home I’m planning on going to or what would happen but then, I need to see things for myself. I want to be sure I have been abandoned and utterly left alone in this world. “Fine,” he nods, “I will ask the nurse to prepare your discharge papers but don’t say I did not warn you, Athena. If anything happens to you or your baby, Gemini and your husband will live.” He doesn’t wait for my response as he turns and leaves. I don’t stop him this time again. I don’t know the future that awaits me but one thing is sure—I want to be out of the four walls of this hospital. Half an hour later, I am standing in front of the hospital. Seth booked a ride for me but I didn’t get to see him to thank him for that. The nurse told me he went in for a surgery. I don’t know if I will ever see him again but I can only ask the moon goddess to make his life perfect just like he made mine a few days ago. I finally board the taxi and we zoom towards the Hallow mansion. I don’t know what I am expecting but the goddess knows I am already very exhausted to do anything else. In no time, the car pulls up in front of the gates but the sight that greets me sends a frown across my face. Cars are parked everywhere. Is there a function happening at home? A lot is going on in my mind as I step into the gates. The security does not bother to stop me but as soon as I step on the porch, my mother in law walks out. She is dressed so beautifully. “What’s going on here, mother?” I ask her. “You didn’t tell us you were coming back today,” she replies, “we made preparations that didn’t have you returning today.” “What?” “I will ask Grace to open the back door for you,” her eyes travel down my entire body and she scrunchies her nose like I am a smelly piece of garbage, “come in through the back door. Do not let any of our guests see you this way,” Before I get to respond, she turns and walks away leaving me to my thoughts. I stand there for a few minutes, trying to understand what’s going on. I was in the hospital, almost losing my baby but none of them bothered about me. They were busy throwing parties. My heart shatters again. Just when I think it can’t get worse, something else comes to stare at me in the face. “Luna,” Grace's words pull me out of my train of thought and I turn around to see her behind me. “The back door is open now” I can feel the pain in her voice, I can feel the sadness. Grace is the most loving soul that I know so seeing her like this sparks some questions. “What kind of function is going on?” “Ma?” “Answer me,” She hesitates for a moment, her gaze shifting from me to the guard behind me. “Grace?” “It’s the boss and Miss Gemini’s engagement party,” she drops the bombshell and for the next few seconds, I remain speechless, trying to make meaning out of what she has just said. “What did you say?” I finally find my voice, “what engagement?” That’s certainly not possible right? Stefan and I are still married. Yes, we had our differences but is this enough for him to engage someone else when I am still alive and carrying his baby? This must be a joke. They may all be trying to prank me. I know Stefan, he is just doing this to get attention from me. “Let me see for myself,” I don’t wait for Grace, I storm into the house and I catch Stefan being called upon to make a speech. He is wearing the same tux I have had custom made for our anniversary which is two weeks away. I told him not to worry about his clothes that I would take care of it and he is— My gaze travels to Gemini and my jaw drops. She is wearing my dress for my anniversary. What the heck? How did she get her hands on it? She is standing beside Stefan with a huge smile on her face while I see my step mother and my father standing a few steps away and they are both smiling. They are smiling? My sister is stealing my husband right in front of everyone and they are smiling? Stefan’s voice pulls me back from my thoughts as I return my gaze to him again. “Thank you everyone for honoring our invitation,” he says, his smile as wide as anything. In my six years of being married to him, I have never seen him smile so wide—it’s almost like I am getting to know this side of him for the first time. “Gemini and I have been together for three years and in three years, I totally understood what true love actually meant,” he continues, his gaze slowly shifting to me. If he is surprised, Stefan did not show it. He just continues talking as the smile remains plastered on his lips like a second skin. “So we have decided to take it forward today and that’s why I planned this surprise engagement for her. I want her to know she is loved by me and my family. Anything at all she needs, she only has to say the word and I will bring the world to its knees for her. Baby.” He turns to her and slowly takes her hand, gently pulling her towards him. I immediately feel nauseous, my insides churn with something I can not explain. How the heck did it come to this? Stefan did not bother to apologize to me about what he did but he goes ahead to engage her? Is this some kind of joke? I look around for hidden cameras but nothing. It’s all happening live and it’s true. Pain shoots through my entire body as I take a step forward. Right now, I am about to do something nasty and I am not even thinking about it. For six years no one saw me and today— Tears stream down my cheek as I continue to walk towards them. Grace tries to hold me but I shove her hand off and continue walking. I don’t know where I got the strength but I am not going to allow this injustice to be done to me and my child. I gave him six years of my life and this is how he repays me. The more I think about it, the more the feeling of betrayal settles like a thick blanket. It makes no sense, whatever the two of them are doing. Husbands don't do this to their wives, sisters don’t do this to their own sisters. It makes no sense whatsoever. “Ladies and gentlemen. Please— “But I am your wife,” I cut him off and all eyes turns to me, including Gemini who looks like she wants to rip my eyes out of my body with the way she is staring daggers at me. “What do you think you are doing, Stefan?” I ask again, “why are you getting engaged to someone else when I am alive and carrying your child, Stefan?” “Who let this stray dog in?” Gemini yells as she grabs his hand, panic evident in her eyes. “Me?” I scoff, “a stray dog in my own home?” “What rubbish do you think you are displaying, Athena?” My step mother asks as she grabs my hand, “you better keep quiet and leave peacefully.” “Leave?” My voice is now over the roof. I can see the reporters pulling out their gadgets. At this point, I no longer care but I can’t allow this to happen to me, to happen to my child. “After six f*****g years and you—” I stop talking for a moment as I clutch my stomach. The pain is becoming unbearable again. It’s like a thousand needles are being pierced into my skin. “I am his wife!” I yell again for everyone to hear, hissing in pain and tears, “I do not agree to this engagement.”
