4: Meet The Alpha

NYSERA The ground shook violently as the Veinspire fell to the ground. I don't know if there are some people under the statue, but I hope that there's no one there. I can't imagine the pain of having a heavy and huge debris squeezing your body to death. We didn't even have the time to mourn for the loss of the Veinspire, as we have our lives to save. My family started running once again, not minding if all of our bodies were already soaked by the heavy rain. "Hide!" Papa shouted as he pulled us behind a house. The moment I was hidden behind those bricks, I saw several arrows being fired on the unprotected part. The arrows were thick and pointy, just like how I saw them in my visions. They were so durable that it broke the door of one of the houses, making a huge hole that penetrated to the other side. They fell nonstop, as if the sky was pouring out rain and arrows at the same time. I turned to my father, and I know that he also saw what happened to the door. I even heard him cursing under his breath before letting go of Niko. He crawled to the other side, reaching for the spare thick aluminum sheet on the side, and hurrying back to safety before the arrows hit him. "Use this," Papa told us to hold each side of the aluminum sheet and hide ourselves from it. "Follow my lead, okay?" We nodded, and Mama made us switch positions. Papa is on the front, Mama on the back, and I am in the middle. When my brothers were already in their care, Papa made a countdown for us to run for our lives. "Run!" Papa's shout made us run as fast as we could. The bag on my back was so heavy that it made it difficult for me to run, but I didn't dare to stop. I kicked my legs and caught my breath as I ran. Suddenly, an arrow was shot in our direction. Instinctively, we put the aluminum shield higher to stop the weapon from hitting us. I almost lost my breath as the pointed part of the arrow almost pierced through the shield that we have. If it had pierced, my eyes would have been bleeding by now. I wasn't even able to process what happened when Papa pulled me to run again. Several screams echoed in the whole territory. The deafening pleas for help of the pack members were drowned by the sounds of explosions and heavy rain. I didn't dare to look in their direction, because I know that it would risk our safety. I continued looking at my father, following his quick footsteps as we went towards the west part of the plateau. I was running when suddenly, I almost tripped as my foot was caught on something. When I looked down, a soundless scream escaped from my mouth. A man with a mutilated face lay dead on the ground, with his face rolling near my feet. The engraved words "Nightflame" were on his forehead, as if they were letting us know the name of the people who did this brutal thing. "Nysera!" Papa shouted my name, and I felt Mama pushing me forward. "We don't have time left. Don't mind them." We ran, and ran. We didn't stop running even if we stomped over the dead bodies of the other pack members. We didn't slow down even if several arrows were pointed at us. We didn't dare to look back even if we heard their screams and pleas for help. The rain and my tired body made it more difficult for me to breathe, but I can't stop. I can only breathe properly once we are out of this ruined pack. We were running and almost just a few meters away from the edge of the plateau when suddenly, I heard a loud "swish" from the back. Even if I know that there's no turning back, I cannot stop myself from looking in that direction. An unfamiliar man standing with a huge spear in his hand. He played with the spear with a devilish look on his face, and his eyes fixed on Mama. The vision I saw earlier started playing in my mind once again, and even though I can hear my parents telling me to run, I didn't do it. Instead, I did what I thought was right. I turned around, and using my bag, I pushed Mama in my previous direction until she was close to Papa. Everything happened so slowly in my eyes, but even my movements were slow. At one moment, I was pushing my mother to safety, and then in a snap, the spear scratched through my cheeks. A burning sensation crawled from my cheeks to the other parts of my body. I don't know what happened, but at the same time, I felt my chest and head burning — as if something just changed within me. I ignored my wound, and picked up the fallen spear on the ground. Like a woman out of her mind, I threw the spear back to the unknown man, using all the force that I have inside me. I don't know if it's just sheer luck, but the spear pierced through the chest of the man, sending him flying away until he hit a tree. Now, he looked like a paper pinned on the tree, making him unmoving until he was dead. I wasn't even able to adjust to what happened when someone touched my shoulder. "Nysera, we need to leave now," Mama gave me a handkerchief to cover my bleeding cheek. "We're almost there." Natan wrapped his hand around my arm and pulled me closer to them as we ran towards the edge of the plateau. We're almost near our safe place. Once we slide down, we can run out and go to the human space to blend in. "Niko, hold on to me tightly," Papa spoke to my younger brother. "And Natan, hold on to Mama." Without wasting any moment, we jumped down off the plateau, made ourselves slide down from the 600-meter high territory. The gravity was pulling us down, and I'm trying so hard not to stumble and roll to the mud. The wind, together with the rain and my open wound makes everything worse. I can feel my skin being opened up and the blood gushing out more from my body. I don't know how many seconds we had been sliding down the plateau, but when we did, two large spears greeted us, blocking our way out as an unfamiliar group surrounded my family. "I was right. There are really some people who will try to escape from this part," a man's baritone voice echoed in my ear - low and chilling. His voice alone made my wolf howling, tingling, and aching for touch — something that it didn't feel before. A hand reached out to touch my wounded cheek, and it made me look up to him, meeting my eyes. His black hair is wet from the rain, and it traces his sharp features more like he’s a perfect sculpture. From the power that clung to his body, there is no denying that he is an alpha. The leader of the monsters who destroyed our pack — our home. His green eyes met mine, making my wolf become more uncontrollable. She wants to come out. She wants to touch him. The cravings of a female wolf for attraction and electrifying connection made her scream and begged me to do something as she kept on repeating the same word. "Mate."
