The silence still lingered in the air, heavy, unbroken, like the world itself had paused after our eyes met.
I couldn't move.Couldn't think.
Because he was still there.
Sitting at the end of the room like he had been carved into it,unshaken, unmoved, untouchable.
Tall, dangerously still. The kind of stillness that didn't mean peace... but control.
Slowly, my gaze traced him again, as if my mind was only now catching up to what my eyes had already seen. His presence filled the space completely, swallowing everything around him without effort.
He was strikingly handsome almost unfairly so. Every feature on his face looked deliberately crafted: a sharp jawline that cut clean through the soft lighting, high cheekbones that gave him a sculpted, almost regal structure, and lips set in a firm, unreadable line.
Broad shoulders held with quiet authority, a strong frame that hinted at power without needing to show it. Beneath the fabric of his shirt, the faint outline of a well-built torso was visible, controlled and precise, as if even his body refused to be anything less than perfect.
His skin was smooth, flawless, carrying a natural richness that made him look almost unreal under the soft lighting of the mansion.
But it was his eyes that trapped me.
Dark. Deep. Unreadable.
They didn't just look at me;they held me there, pinned in place without a single word. And for a reason I couldn't understand...I couldn't look away.
He sat there still, composed, impossibly striking, like he had all the time in the world. And I hated how aware I was of him.My eyes shouldn't have lingered.
But they did;On his face... sharp, perfectly carved. On the way his presence filled the room without effort. On the quiet confidence that wrapped around him like it belonged there.
My thoughts faltered.Am I really checking out a man?The realization hit me suddenly, like a splash of cold water.Panic flickered in my chest.
"Claire... come back to your senses".
I forced myself to straighten, forcing my gaze away from him even though it felt strangely difficult, like my attention didn't want to obey me anymore.
Because the worst part was he hadn't even said a word. And still... he had managed to occupy every corner of my mind.
He didn't move at first.Just sat there... watching.
Then, slowly, he stood up and began to walk. Each step echoed softly against the marble floor, calm and deliberate, like he had no reason to rush. Yet somehow, the entire room seemed to tighten with every movement he made.
Closer.
Closer.
Until the space between us no longer felt safe.My breath caught in my throat.I didn't even realize I had tensed until my shoulders stiffened, instinctively reacting to his presence as he stopped just a few steps away.
His eyes lowered slightly, locking onto us with quiet precision. His eyes were cold, fixed on us with a quiet control that felt more dangerous than anger.
Then.....his gaze landed on her.And for a split second, everything in him went still. His jaw tightened almost instantly. The air around him shifted immediately into something heavy, almost suffocating him.He stood frozen...shock rooting him in place, silencing every other thoughts.
Then just as quickly.....it was gone,as if it had never been there in the first place. His face returned to its familiar coldness, empty and unreadable.
"Your mother is dead..."
The words cut clean through the silence.
Claire's thoughts shattered instantly, dragged back to the present as if something had snapped inside her. Her breath hitched, and she swallowed hard, her throat suddenly tight.
For a second, she couldn't move.
Couldn't think.
The reminder felt colder coming from him—stripped of sympathy, stripped of softness. Just truth. Hard and unyielding truth.
Her fingers curled slightly at her sides as she forced herself to steady, but the weight of his voice still lingered, pressing down on her chest.
Her thoughts unraveling as memories surfaced—her mother's quiet strength, the years she spent working in a house that was never truly hers. Then came the darker ones. The sickness. The way it drained her slowly... painfully. The hospital visits. The hushed conversations. The exhaustion she tried so hard to hide. And beneath it all—the debt.
Her mother had borrowed money to survive... to fight. But she hadn't won.
She hadn't lived long enough to pay him back.
And somehow...that felt like the cruelest part of all.Because death had taken her but it hadn't taken what she owed.
"Now," he said calmly, "we move to the payment."
Her stomach tightened instantly.
Lisa shifted beside her, tense but alert.
"Wh....what do you mean... payment?" Lisa asked carefully, though her voice carried a clear edge of fear she was trying to hide.
His gaze moved to her slowly, unbothered—like nothing in this world could rush him.
"You both will work for me as my maids," he said simply.
The words didn't come with anger. They came with certainty.Like it had already been decided long before they arrived.Claire's fingers curled slightly at her sides.
Lisa's lips fell open and she gazed at him with shock, she couldn't believe what she just heard.Maid? The word echoed sharply in her mind.I can't be a maid. What about my job,my life,my career?
A flicker of panic rose in her chest, but she forced it down quickly.she couldn't afford to break. Not here. Not in front of this man.
"Please..." Lisa's voice came out softer than she intended.
She swallowed, her throat tight, her composure slipping just enough to betray the fear beneath it.
"Please... just give us some more time," she said again, her voice trembling now despite her effort to steady it.
Her fingers curled slightly at her sides.
"We'll pay you back," she added quickly. "I promise...we will."
For a moment, she looked nothing like the strong, composed girl she had been trying so hard to be.Just someone scared.
Someone trying to hold on to the last bit of control she had left.
A quiet, almost amused exhale left him as he tilted his head slightly.
"Time?" he repeated, his voice low.The word sounded foreign coming from him.Like it meant nothing. His gaze hardened, the faint trace of amusement disappearing just as quickly as it came.
"You misunderstand your position." The room seemed to still."You are not in a place to negotiate."
Each word was calm,measured,final.
His eyes flicked briefly to Claire before returning to Lisa.
"There will be no extensions. No second chances. No reconsideration."
He paused and then continued....
"The debt is already overdue,"he said, his voice edged with cold finality."And it will be paid."
Lisa went completely still. And just like that...whatever hope had been in the room....died.
"When you are here," he continued, his voice calm but edged with something sharp underneath, "you do not question my rules."
His gaze darkened as it moved between them."You do not decide how things are done here. You do not bend what I say. You obey."
A pause......And then his voice dropped lower.
"And if you choose to test me..."The air seemed to still completely. His eyes hardened—colder now, darker, stripped of any softness.
"...I will make your life here feel like hell."
The words were not shouted. They didn't need to be.They landed like something already inevitable.
Claire's breath caught sharply.Lisa's face tightened, fear flashing openly now for the first time.
Because there was no doubt in his tone.He wasn't warning them.He was promising them.
Then, without looking away from them, he lifted his hand slightly.A man appeared almost instantly at the edge of the room.
"Yes boss" the guard said.
"Take them to their rooms," he ordered coldly. "Make sure they understand where they are."
The guard nodded once and stepped forward.
Claire's heart dropped.
Wait—rooms?
She hadn't even thought about that part.
Lisa instinctively moved closer to her as the man gestured for them to follow him.
But before they could fully turn...Claire looked back.Just once. And he was still there watching them.Dark eyes fixed on them like they were already part of something they didn't understand yet.Something they couldn't escape from.
And as the guard stepped closer behind them, leading them toward the hallway....Claire felt it clearly in her chest.
This wasn't the end of anything. It was the beginning.
