Ella came to my class, which made me wonder if she had friends.
"Ella, where are your friends? Don't you have friends?" I said.
"Can they come to your class with me? Of course I have friends." She said sarcastically.
"They probably asked a lot of questions about the bandage." I knew that I didn't take insults from anyone. Even when I insulted people, I would expect them not to retaliate. I lacked a sense of humour, but with Ella, it was kind of different.
"Yes, they did, but I told them that It was an accident. My mom told me not to tell anyone what happened." She replied with a mix of curiosity and anger. I knew that she would have liked to join me in finding out the attacker, but I couldn't involve her.
"Okay, and also, the investigation is ongoing. No one is above suspicion, which means that you have to be prudent when discussing with people to avoid disrupting the investigation process." Jessie was the only one who knew the attack on Ella, I didn't let Ella know that Jessie knew of it.If I told her then I would have to tell her that I was also looking for the person who attacked her.
"What of Mia? I think you need to stay away from her." She said in a sullen tone.
"We are good friends, that's all I can say." To know an enemy's motives, you have to keep them closer than your friends. I had to keep Mia close enough to find out if she had attacked Ella.
"Good." Ella left a few minutes. I said that Mia was my friend. She waited so I wouldn't think she left because of what I said. Ella only acted that way with someone she cared for. If not, she wouldn't have considered leaving after a few minutes. She had ignored a girl who was talking to her. When I asked her why, she said it was because the girl was rude. I couldn't bring myself to ignore anyone, not even my enemies. I could only ignore someone when angry.
I didn't know if my relationship with Ella would end that day, but I knew I had to expose her attacker.
After dismissal that day, Jessie, whom I had told to meet me at the back of the school, didn't make it. I called her phone number, but she didn't pick up the call. I called Zoe and asked her if she had seen Jessie, and she affirmed that Jessie was with her. How could she go without telling me, I wondered.
"Zoe, I want to discuss something with her. Please give her the phone." I said impatiently.
"She was here but she just left, she said that she forgot to see you before coming to my house. I tried to know why she wanted to see you but she didn't tell me. Isn't she there yet?" She said.
"No, she isn't with me." I said.
"I'm sure she's on her way, bye, I have work to do." She hung up the call.
I waited for a few minutes, but I didn't see Jessie. I decided to go home and wait till the next day to see her.
Ella came to visit me later that day. We spent our time on our phones. When she was about to leave, I remembered that I had to ask her about the piece of broken glass.
"Ella, has the police officers seen any evidence leading to the attacker." I said.
"No, they said that maybe it was just a prank on me by my classmates. They have closed their investigation." She sulked.
"How can they do that? Is your mom okay with that?" I said pathetically.
"She didn't mind because I wasn't kidn*pped nor killed. She's okay with it." She said.
"Are you okay with that?" I enquired.
"Yes, it's okay." She added promptly. I knew she wasn't telling the truth. It was written all over her face.
"Ella, how were you attacked? I mean, why do the police officers think it was a prank?" I said.
"I was attacked from behind. I tried to run away, and then I felt sudden dizziness, everywhere faded to black. That's all I can remember." She said.
"Okay, I will accompany you to your house so you won't get kidn*pped or killed." I said playfully.
"Who will accompany you back?" She added.
"I'm your senior, I will be fine."
"How sure are you?"
"Do you want to go on your own?"
"Yes, I don't mind."
Ella was the first daughter, the eldest child, and she was okay with having no assistance. She was used to doing everything on her own, but she later gave in and allowed me to accompany her to her house.
Ella convinced me to go back before we had even arrived at her house.
The wind caresessed my skin as I walked briskly because it was already late. The street lights creaked, so I started running because I was afraid. Just then, I heard my name. I stopped and looked around to know where I heard the sound from, but I didn't see anyone. I continued running, and then I saw Mia coming right towards me. I attempted to run towards Ella's house, but she pleaded with me to hear her out.
