Chapter 13

Liam wasn’t exactly happy about having to leave the room to go down to meet his mother. Now that I had gotten my wolf, Isla, Liam and his wolf, Magnus, wanted to get to know her. It would be great if I could get some time to meet her as well. I was new to this whole werewolf thing and my head was practically swimming. I grabbed tightly ahold of Liam’s hand, I knew that he was going to be the one to help me through all of this. He’s been great with any questions that I’ve had to far. We walked into the kitchen to be might by his mom bustling around with a notebook in her name and talking to the kitchen help about, I’m assuming, the dinner tonight. This is the pack house and anyone from their pack was always welcome to come and go. Liam told me that they even host other packs to come visit or discuss business. That’s why his house has so many rooms, they always need to be ready to have multiple guest. “Hey Mom.” Liam called out to his mom as she hurried right pass up. “Oh sweetheart!” She stopped right in her tracks. She was a beautiful women, long dark hair that was curled around into a French twist, pinned back with crystal hairpins. A quite old fashion accessory for a lady who couldn’t be any older than her late 40’s. “This must be Cecily.” She said with a magnificent smile that reminded me of Liam’s. “It’s wonderful to meet you, Mrs. Moran.” She reached out towards me and embraced me in a hug. “None of this Mrs. Moran. Please call me Rebecca or mom.” The last part had a ping ringing in my heart. I hadn’t thought about the idea of calling anyone else mom for six years. “Thank you.” I said as she pulled away from the hug. She smiled back at me. It was easy to she her kindness. “I hope you don’t mind,” Liam turned around to grab a basket off of the counter behind us, “I’m going to take Cecily on a picnic for lunch.” My heart fluttered in my chest, I was excited to get to have lunch with him. Everything has been so hectic lately, that it’ll be nice to just have some one on one time with him. “You two go have some fun. We will have lots of time to get to know each other.” Rebecca really is one of the sweetest ladies I’ve ever met. Liam grabbed ahold of my hand and guided me out the back door of the pack house. There was a bit of open grass that was clear in the back before reaching the tree line. He walked right past the grass and entered into the forest. I gave him a questioning look, wondering where he’s taking me. “Just trust me.” He said while giving me a heartwarming smile. “Always.” I countered before returning the smile. We walked for a few minutes before we stepped into a clearing that was the most beautiful meadow I’ve ever seen. The short grass gave way to little flowers that popped up everywhere. The colors of them all mixing together made it look as if we were stepping into a watercolor painting. Liam pulled out a blanket out of the basket and began to get it set up. Everything was setup in a couple minutes, while I had looked around the small meadow. Liam called me over to join him on the blanket for his mix of treats that he brought. I sat down on the soft blanket right next to Liam. He set out some sandwiches for us, along with strawberries, blueberries, and oranges. A bowl of crackers were in the middle with different cheeses around it. I smiled, he had tried so hard to make this so nice for us. “So.” I began, bring a drink to my lips for a quick sip. “Now that I have my wolf, what is the next step?” Liam looked to me with a smile. “I’m glad that you’re handling all of this so well.” I took a deep breath, “I always felt like something was different about me, but I had no clue it would be this different.” I chuckled at my our statement. It was surreal. “I figured I could embrace it and learn all I can or try to hide from it but it’ll find me eventually.” He took my hand into his before being his lips to it. “I know it’s a lot, but know I will be here with you. Our next step is to get you ready to shift.” He said it all so calmly. This is all so second nature for him. “Shift? I’m guessing that means to turn into a wolf?” I questioned to him. “Yes, a werewolf can shift at anytime, but for new werewolves it’s encouraged to wait until their first full moon.” My brows dipped down in question. “The full moon is meant to reinvigorate and give a boost to werewolves. It helps the first shift to go smoother and not as painful.” I can only imagine how much pain someone might feel to completely transform one’s body into an animal form. I grimaced at the thought. “You’ll do great. I’ll be there to help with the pain as well. Mates can help each other to stay calm, heal faster. Your mate is meant to be whatever you need in that moment.” It was nice to know that I would have someone that would always be there for me and I could in turn always be there for him. My attention was drawn to the outskirts of the meadow, where the trees began to build a canopy, by the snapping of a branch. Liam too looked to where the sound came from. We both turned back toward each other after a minute. I’m sure we’re both a bit on edge after the encounter from yesterday. Just then, the most putrid smell hit my nose, it smelled like a mix of rotting flesh, mildew and garbage. I’ve never smelt something so terrible in all my life. Liam stiffened as the smell also made its way to his nose. “Shit.” He stood so quickly I almost went backwards. “What’s wrong?” I jumped to my feet, standing behind him. His arms moved back in a defensive position around me. “Cecily, I need you to stay behind me.” He said to me, never taking his eyes off of the tree line in front of us. “It’s rogues.” What on earth is a rogue? I knew right now was not the best time to ask him. Whatever they are, they must not be very good. Another crunch came just to the left of us. There’s more than one for sure. “Cecily, you’re going to have to run while I hold them off.” “No. I’m not going to leave you.” “You cannot shift yet and staying here in human form will get you killed.” I could tell he wasn’t exaggerating. “Get to the pack house as fast as you can. Go. Now!” His command had me jump before taking off running into the woods. I looked back for only a second to see five large wolves jump out at Liam. I was incredibly scared for my mate, but I didn’t dare go against his word. I knew I would be a hindrance instead of an asset right now. I heard a thundering sound from behind me, I know that sound, a wolf was coming after me. I tried to pick up my pace, giving every last drop that I had left in me. I was so close to being back at the pack house. Just a few more yards through the trees. I stayed to feel a bit of relief when I could see the back doors, I needed to get inside and send others to help Liam. My mind was focused when I felt the most excruciating pain in my life. I didn’t realize how close that wolf was behind me until his claws drug down the back of my leg. I could feel each claw tearing through my skin. I fell to the ground with an agonizing scream escaping my lips. I turned to see a grey wolf overtop of me before I succumb to the pain and fell into darkness.
