Jane
Blaze was in my living room, kissing me. He didn't know it was my first kiss, and I wasn't about to tell him. The gentleness of his mouth caught me off guard, a sharp contrast to his biker image. I wanted nothing more than to lose myself in him, but a harsh reality check sunk in. Falling for Blaze meant risking heartbreak when he learned the truth about me.
"I see your eyes moving, Jane. Planning how you can get to your book bag and take off?"
"You caused this mess with that woman! She never would have even known I existed if it wasn't for you!" I lashed out.
"I know that, and I'm so sorry she came after you. I kicked Gina out of the club, Jane. My brother and other bikers tossed her out the door before I announced that you were under our protection." Blaze told me, taking a strand of my hair.
"Well she found out somehow!" I said.
"I know, and I'm looking into how she could have. She won't be a problem for long." Blaze assured me. I looked into his dark brown eyes and while they shined for me, there was a darkness there.
"What are you going to do with her? And don't lie to me!"
"You're about to be my Ol' Lady. I'd never lie to you. We're going to take care of Gina, permanently." Memories of my father rushed back, to when he would bring home people he deemed traitors and torture them in front of all of us.
I do this so that you all know how I handle betrayal, loves. Never forget it and always stay loyal! He would tell us after he finished them off.
"Jane, baby, you alright?" Blaze touched my face.
"You need to leave." I managed to say.
"Not a chance in hell." Blaze firmly told me.
"You just told me you're going to kill your ex-girlfriend! I don't want..." Blaze held his finger to my lips.
"Not my ex-girlfriend. Gina was a house mama."
"What the hell is a house mama?"
"A woman who the bikers share for consensual s*x. I'll be honest with you, Jane, I screwed Gina a few times. I told her from the jump that's all it was going to be. Gina tried to take it further, but I was firm and told her I wasn't interested. She tried making me jealous by f*****g other bikers, then she hooked up with two of my boys, Ace and Demon. She played games with them, they kept fighting over her, and that's why I kicked her out of the club. It had nothing to do with you. Gina has her sights on you, and when she gets like that no one can reason with her. I saw her at the clinic and I gave her an out to leave town. She threatened the club instead. So she has to go." Blaze told me, tracing circles on the back of my hand.
My father would have killed for much, much less. Maybe Blaze isn't like him after all.
"Have you killed anyone else?"
"I served four years in the Army and was deployed all over the Middle East. Yes, I have killed in battle. Thankfully I never had to kill women and children, though some of the other men had to.Since I've been an Outcast, I've only helped kill one other person. He r***d the niece of an Outcast and the police wouldn't do anything about it. It was only a matter of time before he did it again, so we took care of him."
Blaze’s words hung heavily between us. I swallowed against the sudden dryness in my throat, waiting for the panic to set in. But to my surprise, it didn't. In spite of the blood on Blaze's hands and even though I had only known him a short time, I knew he would not hurt me.
But my father and Domico would certainly hurt him. As tough and strong as Blaze is, he's no match for either one of them. I can't risk him or his other club members.
"Jane, who are you afraid of? I can help you." Blaze touched my face gently, stroking the side of my cheek.
"I can't." I whispered, tears threatening to spill. Blaze held me to his chest, kissing my forehead. The last of my defenses began to fall at his tenderness.
"Alright, I'll leave it alone for now. You have secrets and while I want to hear them, I know you aren't ready to tell me and I will wait until you are. What else do you want to know about me?"
"How old are you? What's your actual name?" I wiped my eyes quickly.
Blaze chuckled. "Damn right to the chase. I'm 31, my real name is Maverick James. Did you know Brandon is my cousin?"
"No, I didn't. I can see some resemblance, though. Are him and Grace also Outcasts?"
"I consider them members even though they come to the bar rarely and haven't taken the oath. Where are you really from?"
"Can I tell you that another time?" I didn't want to risk him looking up Savannah, Georgia and seeing the news articles about my dad. Blaze was smart and would put the pieces together fast.
"Damn, you're making it hard for me baby." Blaze smirked and toyed with my hair. "What's your favorite color?"
"Green. I'm going to say yours is black." I guessed.
"Nope, I wear this to scare people. Mine is really blue." Blaze laughed.
"What is an Ol' Lady?"
"She's a biker's one and only, his other half, his end game if you will. She's higher than a house mama. Once she's claimed by a biker, no one else can touch her. If they do, God help them."
"And you think I'm your Ol' Lady?"
"I know you are. I told you there is a thing with men in my family when we find our women. It happened to Brandon. He can tell you the story, but he knew Grace was his the day he met her. Same thing with my daddy and granddaddy. They found their women early in life and claimed them quickly. I really thought it would never happen to me until I met you."
I wanted to argue that love at first sight is impossible. You can't build a life on an instant connection; it takes months and years to really know a person. But Blaze was fiercely set in his belief that I was his destiny. And I knew that the moment he discovered the truth about my past, everything would change.
The best thing I could do for both of us was not to encourage him.
"I know you believe I'm your soulmate, but did you ever stop to think it's simply a strong attraction? Think about it, you yourself said you have lived here most of your life. You see me, I'm different, and I intrigue you for some reason. That's all this is."
Blaze stared at me, then suddenly shifted and pinned me to the couch. He kissed the side of my neck. "I'm not going to tell you again, Jane. You're my person, the one I'm meant to be with. Don't ever doubt it or how I feel for you."
He lifted my legs to wrap around his waist, deepening the kiss. My body responded instantly, waking up in ways it never had before. As intoxicating as it was, panic flared in my chest. I had to pull back. If I let things go where we both wanted them to, it would only cause a deeper heartbreak when he learns who I really am and leaves me behind.
"Blaze please, stop. We can't." I put my hands on his shoulder to stop him.
"Why are you holding back? Is there another man?" Blaze demanded.
"It's a long story."
"I have all the time you need for everything else, but this is something I really need to know, Jane. Tell me." Blaze sat up and waited for me to speak.
I took a deep breath. "I'm not going into details right now, but it was an arranged marriage I didn't want and never agreed to. And I've been in hiding since." I got up and went to look out my apartment window for some space. I felt Blaze's strong arms around my waist.
"Did he hurt you?" The threat in his voice was unmistakeable.
"Once." The memory of Domico punching me to the floor in my father's office came rushing back. Blaze's arms tightened around me.
"Give me a name."
"No." I tried to get out of Blaze's arms, but he just held me tighter.
"A name." He turned me to face him, his chocolate brown eyes burning into mine.
"It doesn't matter. He's in my past, he doesn't know where I am. He can't hurt me anymore." I whispered, even though I knew it wasn't true. Sooner or later Domico was going to find me.
Blaze tipped my chin up so he could meet my eyes. "He's after you and if he's like the a**holes I've known in my life, he's not going to give up easily. When I claimed you, I claimed everything about your past, present, and future. I protect what is mine, Jane. Not only do you have me, but you have close to thirty crazy bikers ready to fight. And Lord, does my crew love to fight." Blaze laughed.
The weight of his words fell on me. For the first time, I felt like I may actually have a fighting chance. My father may be a deranged mobster with thugs at the ready to do his bidding, but I've seen Blaze's club members. One would have to be a fool to go up against them. Maybe, just maybe, they could take Trevor down. Then that would only leave Domico to worry about.
"Does your club do anything illegal?" If Blaze is into the stuff my father is, this isn't going any further, no matter how much I am starting to like him.
"We have businesses that bring funds into the club. My auto shop, the bar, Chaos deals in firearms and Venom is a cryptocurrency trader. No dr*gs, no p*ostitution or anything like that. The money is clean. We only do illegal stuff to protect us and the people who need our protection."
"Like when you got rid of that guy." I said, understanding more about Blaze and the morally grey honor code he lives by.
"Yeah. And Gina, because she's manipulative enough to f**k some other poor biker into doing whatever she wants. And I'm not going to jeopardize yours and the club's safety."
"Even if she gave you her word to leave and never come back?" I'm pissed about Gina and how she attacked me, but I didn't want her killed because of me either.
"She threatened me and the club. I'm not going to give her the chance to make good on it." Blaze's cell phone rang.
"I need to take this. I'll just be a minute." Blaze kissed my forehead and spoke to whoever phoned.
"Are you f****ing serious...Alright, I'm on my way." He turned to face me.
"I need to go, and I want you to come to the clubhouse with me."
"Why?" I didn't care for the look on Blaze's face.
"Because we don't have eyes on Gina."
