The storm that had been threatening for over an hour hit full force as I waited for my roast beef, and I watched the downpour from their small shop’s window facing Jessie’s apartment building two blocks up the road.
I knew it would take a good twenty minutes for Jessie to get Cassie in bed, so I didn’t mind the extra bit of time it took for my order number to be called while I kept an eye focused her way.
“Number seventy-six?” the girl at the counter stated loudly.
Turning from the window, I moved back toward the counter. “Thanks,” I said and headed for the door and my truck I’d left idling by the curb.
There was no escaping getting soaked, so I sprinted out into the rain, hopping into my cab as quickly as possible.
