Chapter 5

CHAPTER FIVE

‘’Urgh’’ I groan as light rays falls into the room. I turn to my side and see Val pulling the curtains open. Boy, she’s an early person, definitely not my kind. Today is Saturday, and it’s our free day so we plan on going shopping.

After breakfast, Valerie leaves me and go to the bathroom. When I get to the room, I see Valerie is dressed in a beautiful show back red gown that accentuates her curves perfectly and her hair is in a messy ponytail.

I rush into the bathroom and when I’m done, I come out clad only in my purple bathrobe. I see a dress Valerie had brought out for me. It is a blue gown with a golden embroidery on the breast region and a slit at my thighs. I put it on and wear my three-inch silver stiletto heels and I neatly pull my hair in a bun.

‘’Girl you look good’’ I say to myself looking at my reflection on the mirror.

 ‘’Lisa, please hurry up’’ Valerie shouts from outside.

‘’I’ll be out in a minute’’ I shout back applying a light make up.

Once we exit the school, Valerie flags a taxi and we’re headed to a shopping mall. She tells the taxi man to stop us at the entrance of a big shopping mall. She pays him as we alight and we both enter the mall at the same time. 

‘’Wow, it’s really big’’ I say looking around.

‘’I know right?’’ Val replies. ‘’Let’s start shopping baby’’

While she’s throwing gowns, heels and other clothing items at me, I sneak to a quiet area and I select a few cloths to my taste. I go to the lip gloss section. And select a strawberry lip gloss. After that, I buy a silver bracelet with diamond gems on it which catches my attention.

As I go back to where Valerie is, she catwalks to me.

‘’How does this look on me? she asks giving me her best smile.

Before we leave, Valerie selects almost a thousand dresses for herself.

‘’Let’s go have lunch in a restaurant, I know just the right place’’ Valerie suggests.

‘’Okay, sounds good to me’’.

We walk a block away before I see a fancy restaurant with the name’’ RISTORANTE DE ELEGANTE ITALIANO’’ meaning The Posh Italian Restaurant. As we enter, I see how luxurious the restaurant looks. We sit on one of the fancy chairs decorated with flowers. I pick up the menu and I get confused while looking at it. I spot a dish with pasta in it.

‘’Cosa avrei tu vorrei a mangiare? (what would you like to eat) A waitress asks holding a note pad.

‘’Sorry?’’ I ask

‘’She said what would you like to eat’’ Valerie interprets.

‘’Ohh, I think I’ll like this’’ I tell the waitress like she’ll understand.

‘’Lei vedi quel lei vuoi avere Pasta e’ Bolognese salsa (she said she’ll like to have Pasta and Bolognese sauce). Valerie tells her.

‘’ Io vuoi avere maccarone e’ Mozzarella formaggio’’ (I will have macaroni and Mozzarella cheese). She says making the lady smile as she leaves.

‘’What, I grew up in Italy, duh’’ she says because of the surprised look I give her.

When the lady brings a tray with our food, ‘’Buon appetitio (enjoy your meal). She says.

‘’Grazie (thank you) Valerie replies returning the lady’s warm smile back. I dig into my food using a fork and a knife and my taste buds rejoice because of the unique and savour taste of the food.

After lunch, we visit Long Beach which is on Long Island. We meet new friends and we set the stuffs for a beach ball game.

I see Adam and Dale coming towards us.

‘’Hey, guys!’’ Dale calls.

Valerie was preparing to serve the ball, the sun gleaming on her blond hair and bronzed skin.

‘’Come on over!’’ she yells, then serves the ball. ‘’Hey, dudes,’’ she says as they walk up. ‘’Come meet our friends. We met them on the beach and they’re so nice. We can use an extra player on each team,’’ she adds.

Adam and Dale both look at each other and scope out the scene. There were four people on each side. One team has two girls, while the other has three.

‘’C’mon, you guys will help balance the ratio, maybe even meet your future partners’’, she finishes with a sly grin.

‘’Whoa, Miss Matchmaker, we’re here strictly for surfing business, Dale jokes.

‘’Sure, we’ll play. Thanks,’’ Adam says.

  The sun is bright, but our friends all take off their sunglasses when Valerie introduces them to Adam and Dale. Gregory and Jamie, the boys know from school, Dennis is really cool. He is tall and lanky with crazy brown hair like a fake Afro wig. He high-fives Adam and Dale.

The other two girls were Lizzy and Linda. Lizzy has a long black hair pulled back in a yellow scrunchie that matched her swimsuit. Dale shakes her hand like he’s made of noodles.

‘’He’s a cutie, Valerie,’’ Lizzy says,’’ but what’s wrong with his arm?’’ Everyone laughs, including Dale.

Lind doesn’t wait for an introduction. She sticks he hand out to Adam and introduces herself. ‘’I’m Linda, you’re Adam. Adam, it’s good to meet a strong guy like you, ‘’How’s your serve?’’

‘’It’s OK.’’

‘’Good!’’ she says. ‘’You’re on my team!’’

‘’Let’s Play’’ Valerie says. 

After that game ends at 21-18, we all switch sides. Everyone is friendly and encouraging, telling each other they had done great. Dennis serves the ball. Dale watches it come over the net, heading straight to him. He hears Valerie call out’ ’Go for it, Dale!’’

The ball bounces off his fingertips, springing up into Jamie’s range. She jumps and spikes the ball over the net.

‘’We won!’’ Jamie cries, turning to high five Dale

‘’Hey, Dale. Are you alright?’’ she asks. Dale is standing still, dazed, with a glassy stare. He is sweating all ver.

‘’Dale, do you need something to eat?’’ Adam asks. ‘’Dale’s diabetic,’’ Adam tells us.

Lizzy immediately takes charge. ‘’Dennis, she says’’ go to the guard stand and ask them for help. Linda, you’re a candy addict. Do you have anything in your backpack?’’

That clicks with Adam. ‘’Wait, Dale carries a kit in his backpack. Let me check it out’’ he says.

Lizzy sits down on the sand with Dale. ‘’You’re doing fine, Dale. We’ll get you feeling better in a few minutes’’.

Adam pops a straw into a juice box and puts the straw up to Dale’s mouth.

Dale looks up blankly. ’’Thank you’’ he says quietly. With a trembling hand, he takes the juice box and begins to drink.

Dennis comes back with a life guard. The guard kneels down in the sand and looks at Dale. ‘’Are you all right, young man?’’ he asks.

Dale nods. ‘’I’ll be OK. I just need to check my blood sugar and then I should eat something’’.

‘’Looks like you’ve got all the help you need. But don’t hesitate to come back for me if you have any problem, OK?’’

‘’Thanks,’’ Lizzy says and he leaves.

‘’Sorry about that,’’ Dale says sheepishly. ‘’Sometimes it sneaks up on me’’.

Adam slaps himself on the head. ‘’You were hungry before we ran into Valerie and Lisa. Dude, you should’ve said something’’. 

‘’It’s OK,’’ Dale replies. ‘’If we had kept going, we would have missed out on some great beach ball’’. Our group laughs.

Me and Dale sit on the beach while the others leave to Surf Shack to buy lunch for everyone.

‘’So how long have you had diabetes, Dale?’ I ask as he checks his blood sugar with a device from his backpack.

‘’I developed it when I was eleven. It sorts of just happened,’’ he answers, matter-of-factly. ‘’It’s usually fine. Today, I just overdid the exercise and I didn’t eat enough to balance the insulin I had taken. I’ll be fine. It’s just sort of embarrassing. 

‘’Don’t sweat it, Dale. It’s cool. You are really cool’’. I say giving him a pat on the back. ‘’I’m glad we’re friends’’.  

Soon, the rest of the group return with our lunch.

‘’Now,’’ I say, ’dig in’’.

We ate and talk for a long time, until finally, Dale stands up. ‘’OK, I’m feeling fine now. Unless anyone objects, I think we should finish up our best of three.

 There is a race to the net. After the game, we spend the rest of the day in the water, swimming and splashing. Late that afternoon, we all pack and leave to Fat Burgers.

 We get back to school by late noon. When we get back, I find Thumper whining and Whiskers angrily staring at the empty space. I guess Thumper is whining because he is hungry, so I make him a snack of cauliflower and dandelion leaf and he likes it a lot.

We start training the next day and let me tell you, it wasn’t an easy one. People faint many times in the course of training. I have also made new friends. Sylvester a warlock, Brandon a phoenix, Sandra a werewolf and Elvis a lion shifter. They are all in the watching squad with me, Valerie and Adam.

One sunny day, me, Valerie and the boys were training outside the school. Me and Valerie were practising sword fighting when we hear a shrill scream. We all rush to the direction of the scream and we see a vampire draining a girl in a dark area of the forest. The ball of fire forming in my palms, was powerful enough to burn the whole forest down. Before I could throw it at the vampire, I see his head rolling towards me on the floor and I see Sylvester in the air with a bow and arrow.

‘’Hey, that was my shot’’ I say to him pretending to pout.

‘’Uhhm guys, she’s dead’’ Valerie says as she moves her hand over the girl’s face while shaking her vigorously. That’s how our training session comes to an end.

We all go to the principal’s office with Adam carrying the lifeless girl’s body on his shoulder. I knock briefly on his door and without hearing anything, I open the door and what we all see is shocking. Mr David was frozen at the door and I could see a witch and an eagle shifter. The witch was busy looking for something in the file cabinet.

 As they notice our presence, the eagle shifter morphs his figure into that of an eagle and was about exiting through the open window but was prevented from doing so by Brandon who pierces its heart with a spear he created at that moment. The witch distracts us by unfreezing Mr David, who coughs once his skin tone is back to normal. Once our whole attention is on him, the witch uses the opportunity to disappear with smoke which makes us cough and try to find a way out.

‘’Thank you all for saving me’’ the principal stutters as he finds it difficult to talk.

‘’Sir, we were out training in the forest today when we heard a scream. We all ran in the direction of the scream and we found a vampire draining a girl in the broad daylight. We took him out with no difficulty, but the girl is dead.’’ I explain

He takes a deep breath before the responds’’ to be honest with you all, I’m really tired of all these. From kobolds to vampires and now witches. This has never happened in this school before. Anyway thanks for all your help and I assure you all that the school will look deeply into this matter. He says reassuringly.

We all exit his office silently as the death of this girl really hurts us.
