Chapter One SUITORS The serenity of Ugwu's island is much that you can almost hear the noise made by the fishes in the sea. The crabs dancing on the dry land, close to the river without disturbance from passers-by. the sea birds flying confidently on the surface of the sea. fishermen seemed to have goon for strike. The body of the water looked gentle but scary. No swimmers today, Ego said to herself as she throw stones in to the sea to create turbulence. She has been sitting by the side of the sea, enjoying the freshness of the wind. She stretches her hands side ways to create more contact with the wind with a smile on her lips like though the wind has a face. Ego is not the outgoing type of person, but anytime she does, she is at the river either swimming or watching people swim. Ugwu is a small island, almost everyone knows each other. They love themselves and care for one another. Everyone in Ugwu knows Ego because of her charming and lavishing beauty. She always wore an attractive smile on her face when ever she speaks. She loves, cares and respect everyone both old and young. Just like her parent Mr and Mrs Echezona. Mr Echezona is a good man, loved and respected by everyone in the island. They admired him not only because of his kindness, but also his ability to replicate his nature in the life of his children. Mr Echezona and his wife have just a son and a daughter. Ego and her younger brother chudy. Chudy is soft hearted like the mother and very courageous like the father and he is skillfully gifted. As young as he is, he can swim deep in to the sea and grab a big fish to the shore, which marvels his peers. Hey! little sis. Ego who was almost absent minded, quickly re-callected herself. that must be Chudy's. Immediately she turned towards the direction of the voice. Behold chudy smiling mischievously. You are been summoned. Wait a minute, who did you call little? Ego inquires. Chudy kept smiling playfully, you of course. Ok don't move, if you love me don't move let me come closer please, Ego pleaded with a motive. No! Chudy shouted with laughter running away with Ego chasing after him. Ego and Chudy are very fund of themself and play a lot. The chase came to a halt when Ego got caught with surprised to see number of unknown faces conversing in the compound. She greeted politely, and rushed in, to inquire from her mum, who the visitors are. The young man out there has come to ask for your hand in marriage her mum said. What! Ego screamed angrily, I won't ask you who exactly, because non of the people out there meet my fantasy and am going out there to let them know. Before her mother could hold her back, she is already outside. She greeted the visitors once again with a smile and said. I know why you are here, but am sorry to say this. Am not interested, please do not be offended thank you. she gave a charming smile and worked back into the house. Everyone was shocked at her behavior except the father who is already conversant with her daughter's habit of rejecting suitors. Ego is actually a nice and respectful girl, but when it comes to issues concerning marriage she losses it.
