Cassie’s POV:
Did I hear well, did Evelyn just ask me ‘who was the werewolf I met?’. How did she know? How could she possibly know? And that was when it clicked to me…. Luke!
‘Hello, earth to Cassie’, she said as she waved her hands over my face to get my attention.
‘Oh, oh sorry. Did you say werewolf?’, I asked, hoping I heard wrong.
‘That’s the same way I felt when Luke told me’, she said, and began laughing. What just happened? I was confused. ‘You need to stop letting your brother listen to those his werewolves podcasts’, she continued, still laughing heavily. ‘He really believes those stuffs are real’, she finally finished.
Oh, she really didn’t know about Damian, she was just teasing Luke. I was relieved. ‘Yeah, I really need to tell him to stop listening to those stuffs’, I said, then faked a laugh. Evelyn thought Luke was lying so I played along.
‘But what were you doing at last night?’, she proceeded to ask.
‘I w-‘
‘Were you on a date?’, she asked loudly before I could answer.
‘No! Absolutely not’, I said defensively.
‘I know when you’re lying’, she said then looked closely at me, I tried to turn my face then she squealed, ‘You did!’. People at the coffee shop turned to look at us. ‘Sorry’, she said then turned to me again to whisper ‘you did’.
‘Alright, it was kind of a date’, I said. Talking with a werewolf all through the night counts as a date right? And anything is better than telling her I found a werewolf in the woods.
She squealed loudly again. ‘Sorry’, she turned to say to the people looking at us again. She turned back at me, ‘give me all the details, don’t miss out a single thing’, she said as she strongly resisted the urge to shout again.
‘There’s nothing to talk about, we just talked’, I said but couldn’t hide the blush on my face.
‘You’re blushing? You must really like this guy, I haven’t seen you blush since Jeff’
Jeff was my ex boyfriend, we only dated for a while, well until he had to leave for college and I had to stay behind to take care of myself and my brother because… you already know all this part. Right now I was feeding my friend lies about a date that never happened.
‘Where’d you guys meet? Is he cute? Are you guys going to see again?’
‘We really need to get back to work’, I said avoiding her questions and laughing.
‘C’mon, the cafe’s basically empty, now spill it’
‘Okay we met at a uhmm…’, I said as I looked around. ‘A coffee shop’, I finally blurted out. Really a coffee shop? Was that the best I could do.
‘Awwn, you work at a coffee shop and met him at a coffee shop. That’s so cuteeeeee’, she said. ‘So is he cute? And are you guys going to be seeing again?’
‘Yes, he’s cute’, I couldn’t help smiling and twirling my hair with my fingers a little as I thought about him.
She made a gasp. ‘The finger twirl, I haven’t seen you do that since- ‘
‘Yes, Jeff. I know. Come on let’s stop talking about it already and get back to work’. I interrupted quickly.
‘Okay, okay’.
‘Thank you’, I said as I poured myself a cup of coffee to drink.
‘You guys slept together yet’, she asked quickly.
I almost spat out the coffee in my mouth. I swallowed it and coughed a little. ‘Evelyn! Come on’, I said.
‘Sorry, sorry, sorry’, she said as she her hands and laughed. ‘I’ll stop’, she finished.
‘Thank you’, I said then laughed a little. Evelyn was the queen of prying, especially when it was about me. But she does it for me, mainly for herself but partly for me.
We went back to work, the cafe was kind of empty today so we didn’t really do much. Tried my best to avoid Evelyn but she still managed to barrage me with a lot of questions.
My shift was finally over, I put off my apron and headed straight to my car to avoid Evelyn. I really wanted to go home but I had to go to the library. I headed over to the library as soon as possible so I wouldn’t be late and get a talking to from my boss.
The library was boring as usual. I was basically on my phone throughout and dropped it whenever I heard the footsteps of my boss. The clock finally struck 8 and I was so happy because I didn’t want to stay one more second there and also I couldn’t wait to see Damian. I had been thinking about him all day, not in a romantic way but I just want to make sure he’s doing better. Okay I’m a romantic way too. I closed the library quickly and immediately hopped in my car. I put on the engine and drove.
As I drove by I got closer to the route which led to the woods, where I go everyday to think of my dad. For the first time in years I didn’t go there. I drove straight home. I finally got to the apartment. I brought out my necklace from my shirt, looked at the picture of my dad and I and gave it a kiss before I got out of the car. I went into the apartment, Luke had fallen asleep on the couch and there were a lot of things on the floor, video games, laptop, magazines. I didn’t understand why. Damian wasn’t in sight though. Did he leave? Has he gone back to his home town? Without any goodbyes, not like he owed me I only saved his life so yeah, he really didn’t.
I dropped my purse and I went to carry Luke.
‘Hey’, someone said from the kitchen. It was Damian.
I was so happy and relieved but didn’t want to show it, ‘Oh you’re still here? I thought you had gone’, I said trying to sound like I wasn’t worried at all but it didn’t come out like I expected, I sounded really worried, I even sighed a little after, like gosh! Keep it together Cassie.
‘Why would I leave?’, he asked then chuckled a bit. ‘Or do you want me to go?’, he asked as he closely moved closer to me.
‘I don’t know. Do you want to?’, I asked, my heart beat elevated as he got closer.
He stopped right in front of me, he was really, really, really close. ‘No’, he said slowly. He leaned in a bit. Wait? Was he about to? ‘I’ll take Luke in’, he said as he gestured his head over to where Luke laid down.
‘Oh, oh. Alright, alright’, I said with a kind of broken voice and with my hands gesturing in a weird way.
He carried Luke and took him to his room then after a few seconds came back out, he switched off the lights on his way out.
‘Thanks a lot, I’ll clean this up then help set the couch for you’, I said as I began picking up Luke’s stuff.
‘Noooo’, he said in protest. ‘I’ll clean this up, right after I get the lasagna I left in the microwave’, he said.
Wait, how does he know all this stuff? Did Luke teach him all these that fast. ‘Thank you’, I said as he went into the kitchen.
A weird smell passed through my nose. What was this smell? Smelt like smoke.
‘Uhm Cassie, I need you’, Damian said from the kitchen.
I rushed over to the kitchen, and I saw Damian standing near the microwave with burnt lasagna inside.
‘I think I left it for too long’, he said. ‘I’m sorry’.
I chuckled a bit, ‘It’s alright. I’ll order pizza’, I said. I started walking back to the living room to get my phone, then went back to the kitchen with only my head through the door, he was trying to remove the burnt lasagna. ‘Thanks again, for real’, I said.
‘Anytime’, he said back with a smile on his face. I went back to the living room and called the pizza delivery guy.
I joined him in the kitchen to clean up, after that we cleaned up the living room together, which was fun. Immediately we were done we heard a doorbell. It was the pizza. I went to get it and paid.
I placed the pizza on table and we both sat on the couch to eat. He picked up the TV remote and put it on.
‘Saved this weeks episode of Murder Mystery for you’, he said as he tuned in to it.
I had to ask, ‘how did you know?’. I continued, ‘Can you read minds or something’, then chuckled a bit.
‘Luke’, he said then chuckled too.
I knew I smelt Luke all over, because I wondered how he could have known. First the lasagna, then this? It could only be Luke.
‘Oh, but thanks still. It was really thoughtful’, I said.
We watched the episode together, ate pizza and talked. It wasn’t anything fancy but it was great. Really great.
After the show we continued talking, I didn’t realize that I was already resting my head on his shoulder.
‘So what’d you think of the show?’, I asked him.
‘It was alright, really nice. But why do you like it so much?’, he asked then laughed a little.
‘I don’t know. It’s fun and it helps me relax’, I said then chuckled a bit.
‘A film show about people dying helps you relax?’, he asked. ‘Should I be worried?’, he said then we both burst into laughter.
‘No silly’, I said as I removed my head from his shoulder to sit up straight. ‘It’s not the murders I like, I like when the murderers get caught. It helps me relax. The closure that whoever committed the crime was caught. Everyday I wish the people that killed my dad were caught so I could get that closure that’s why I wanted to be a cop ever since I was little, but apparently they weren’t and I’m not a cop, I’m a waitress’, I didn’t notice how tense it had gotten. ‘Sorry I didn’t mean to-‘
He had hugged me before I could finish. ‘It’s alright Cassie. And I’m sorry you had to go through all that’, he said as he hugged me even tighter.
‘Thank you’, I said.
‘Oh I’m sorry’, he said as he let go quickly.
‘Oh no, it’s alright’, I said back to him.
‘Uhm alright, you got to rest. I’ll clean up’, he said as he stood up and picked up the pizza box.
I grabbed my things from the table and stood up too, I headed for my room but stopped at the entrance. I turned back to look at him, ‘Goodnight Damian’.
He looked back at me. ‘Goodnight Cassie’, he said then put on a somewhat fake smile.
I went into my room and threw my stuffs on the bed. I laid down and thought about the hug. Yeah, yeah it was a pity hug but still it felt magical and I kind of felt that tingling feeling again.
My phone vibrated and I wondered who could be texting me this late at night. It picked it up and it was a notification from Evelyn.
I opened the text and it read, ‘Cassie you won’t believe it’. The phone vibrated again and I received another message from her, ‘I just heard this night’, she wrote this time. Why the suspense, why didn’t she just tell me what it was. My phone vibrated one last time and the message I saw made my heart skip a beat. ‘Jeff’s in town’, it read.
