Getting To Know Him

Cassie’s POV:

Oh my God, he was awake. I couldn’t believe my eyes, was I still asleep? I’m pretty sure I was not but I needed someone to pinch me just to make sure I wasn’t. He mumbled a bit and struggled to sit straight.

He looked around. ‘ Where am I? ’, he asked again.

I moved closer to him to try and calm him down, ‘ You’re in the hospital ’, I said to him. ‘ When I found you you were seriously hurt so I bright you here ’.

‘ Y-You’re the girl from the woods? ’, he said as he pointed to me and tried to recollect the event. Immediately after, he held his head as he groaned in pain, he probably had a headache.

I moved close to him and tried to get him to lie back down, ‘ Rest, you’re probably in a lot of pain ’, I said to him, as I touched him I felt something coarse through my body, a tingly feeling. He made a face like he felt something too but I wasn’t sure and I couldn’t ask. I wanted to ask him what that was but I didn’t know how.

‘ What are these things on my body? ’, he said removing those wire thingies from his body.

‘ Stop, they’re helping you get better ‘, I said to him even though I didn’t know how they were, he probably did the most part of his healing himself. I held his hand to stop him and I could sense that he was scared, he was scared of the things on his body, he was scared of where he was, it was as if he had no idea what any of these was. Was he experiencing memory loss? Or did he have no idea what they were.

‘Please calm down ‘, this finally made him calm down. ‘ I’ll be back ’, I said to him then I went to tell a nurse he was awake, she said they would let him go the next morning, he had to stay the night so they would make sure he’s feeling completely better. I went back to him to explain to him and also tried to figure out who he was.

‘ The nurse said you’ll have to stay the night to make sure you’re feeling better ’, I said to him.

‘ Nurse? Who’s that? ’, he asked me.

Was he being serious? Did he really not know a nurse? Who was this guy?

‘ You really don’t know who a nurse is? ’, I asked.

‘ I don’t ’, he said trying to think of what the word could possibly mean.

I sat beside him, ‘ Where are you from? ’, I asked.

He was hesitant to answer.

‘ You can trust me ’, I said looking deep into his eyes.

He took a deep breath and then he began talking.

‘ It was night in Venula, but when I crossed the border it was day and there were horseless carriages ’, he said

Honestly, I was lost. I didn’t understand a thing he had just said. Horseless carriages? Venula? What was he talking about.

‘ What’s Venula ’, I asked him.

‘Venula is my home’, he replied. He told me how he was from a different world- Venula and that he crossed the border to our world to check it out but got attacked by a group of people. It was a lot to process. I stayed the night with him and he told me about Venula-and I told him about… well, normal earth. We were up throughout the whole night and we talked, I couldn’t believe I maintained hours long conversation with a stranger, but it was nice. We had a lot of laughs, turns out Venula was a nice place but that his dad wasn’t the best dad, I could relate, but with my mom.

I didn’t really pay a lot of attention to him the first time, well because he was almost dead and needed treatment but now that he’s almost alright, he turns out to be really cute. His face was well framed and he had a mop of thick hair and a really sculpted figure that the hospital gowns didn’t do a good job of hiding well.

Even with our hours of talking he hadn’t mentioned anything about him being a werewolf even though he mentioned that he was attacked and that he was from another world, so I finally brought it up.

‘ You’re a werewolf? ’ , I asked interrupting him.

‘ Ohh, you know? ’, he said sounding a little surprised. ‘ Lycanthrope actually and it turns out we’re not welcome over here. ’, he continued.

‘ Would humans be welcome in Venula? ’, I asked him.

He chuckled a bit then said, ‘Not really ’.

‘ Case in point’ , I said then we both laughed. But still it felt a little strange that he was attacked a few hours after getting here. How did they know where he was? Is their barrier being monitored. I couldn’t shrug off the thoughts so I asked him.

‘ Any idea how they found you? Since you said you weren’t attacked immediately ’

‘Who? The people with arrowhead weapon?’, he asked. I didn’t know what he meant by arrowhead weapon but I nodded. ‘ No idea, they just appeared out of nowhere ’, he said.

We continued talking for a while and when I checked the time and it was almost 7am. The sun was out and we didn’t even notice. The nurse came in and told us he could be checked out now. We checked him out and they had to give him a new set of clothes then we finally went outside. Immediately we got out the hospital door he stared in awe at the amazing sight of the city. He gave an exciting gasp.

‘ So where are you going to go now? Home? ’, I asked him.

He looked at me with a somewhat sad face, ‘ I can’t go back home ’, he said. He felt angry.

‘What do you mean?’, I asked. ‘ There has to be some way back to Venula ‘, I suggested.

‘ I mean, I don’t want to return ’, he said as he faked a laugh.

Something was wrong but I didn’t want to fixate on it so I let it go, ‘ you can stay with me for a while then ’, I said.

‘ Really? ’, he asked, he sounded concern as if he didn’t want to be of any trouble but I could still sense the excitement in him.

‘ Yeah it’s really not a problem, you could stay with us for the mean time ’. Yeah yeah I know inviting a stranger to my home sounded absurd but he didn’t feel like a stranger though.

‘ Thanks a lot ’,

‘ It’s not a problem ’, I said to him as I gave off a huge smile.

‘ Oh you said us, you reside with your parents? ’, he asked.

‘ Oh no I don’t. I live with my younger brother. He’ll like you a lot ’, I said then smiled

‘ Oh really, thanks a lot then ’.

‘ Alright, let’s go then’, I said gesturing to my car.

He gasped, ‘ Horseless carriage ’.

‘ What? You mean the car? ‘, I asked and laughed.

‘ Car? What’s a car? ’, he asked back laughing too. ‘ And how does it move without any horses? ’, he asked again.

‘That my friend is what we call technology’, I said to him. ‘Come on, get in’, I said as I opened the door for him.

He hesitated a bit which made me laugh but then he entered. The drive home was short but felt long, like we were on a road trip, he stared out the window throughout the drive, he was amazed by the sight which was understandable but it also felt like he was trying to avoid eye contact with me. Did he feel the same feeling I felt back then?

We finally got to my apartment. We got out of the car, ‘ Here we are ’ I said pointing to my decrepit apartment as though it was a palace. My apartment wasn’t the best but I loved it. We got in and met Luke home and the apartment wasn’t a mess, Evelyn really did a good job watching after Luke. Why’d she leave so early though. And that was when I remembered. s**t I had to go to work. If I didn’t hurry up I would be late for work. But then it would be only him left here, Luke had to go to school. I looked to the side and saw as Luke kept asking him questions about werewolves, I thought about skipping work today so I would stay with him but I couldn’t, his medical bill’s already about to burn a hole through my pocket. I hope he would do fine staying alone. I went to my room to get prepared and left him with Luke who kept badgering him with questions.

I had my bath, brushed my hair, put on my clothes and I was ready to go. I got to the living room and Luke was still badgering him with questions.

‘ Eh erm, Luke, don’t you have somewhere to be? ’, I asked.

‘ No I don’t ’, he said not sounding the least concerned about school.

‘ It’s almost 8 Luke, you’re going to be late for school! ’

‘ School’s don’t hold on Saturday’s genius ’

‘ What? ’. I took my phone out to check and it really was Saturday. I still had to go to work though but Luke didn’t have to go to school. So I could leave him with Luke and go to work. That’s when it hit me, I didn’t know his name. We had been talking for hours and didn’t even exchange names.

‘ Oh oh, I totally forgot today was Saturday, you can stay with him then ’, I said to Luke. I then turned to him to ask. ‘ I completely forgot to ask your name. That was so rude of me ’

He chuckled a bit then replied, ‘Damian’.

‘Oh what a nice name I’m- ‘,

‘Cassie’, he said before I could finish. I wondered how he knew, could werewolves read mind? ‘ I asked Luke already ’, he said then grinned a little.

‘ Oh oh, alright, you guys have fun then. I’ll see you guys after work ’. I dashed out the door embarrassed. I went into my car and drove to work.

I finally got to work. I went in and I met Evelyn who was standing as if she had been waiting for me the whole time. ‘ So who’s the werewolf you found? ’, she asked with a stern look on her face.
