Chapter 1
Pov Lara
"Ow" I cursed. Once again, I had crashed against the sloping roof when I was woken up thanks to my alarm clock. Cursing softly, I turned it off. It was 06:00.
I sighed and got out of bed and shuffled to the closet. There I chose black skinny jeans and a beige top. It's a good thing I checked yesterday to see how warm it was getting.
I slowly opened my room door and walked towards the bathroom. The door creaked when I opened it. Yes, our house was a bit older, but I didn't mind because it made it look a lot cozier.
In the bathroom, I locked the door behind me and peeled off my sleeping clothes. Then I took a shower to wake up a little. When I was finished, I changed my clothes and put on my make-up.
After that, I opened the door again to go downstairs to the kitchen. My mom was already there.
"Hey," she called out happily and gave me a kiss on the cheek as I sat down on one of the bar stools by the kitchen island. She has always been a happy person and anything but a morning grouch.
Mom made me a sandwich and coffee as usual. I couldn't get through the day without it. I gratefully accepted both and we talked while I had breakfast.
"Lara, you know that your father and I are going to leave right away and so that you also miss me so quickly, I would like to give you something.", she said.
That's right, my parents wanted to go on a business trip. Mom walked over to me and put something in my hand. I looked there and saw a small gold chain. She was very petite and had a round pendant. A wolf was engraved on it. My mom and dad used to call me their little wolf. For whatever reason.
"You'll be back on my 16th birthday, won't you?" I asked. "Of course," she said. It was in a week and I certainly didn't want to celebrate it without my parents. Point.
At 7:00 a.m. I said goodbye to both of them and rode my bike towards the bus stop. There I chained it and joined my friends. Eliza, Andrea and Matt. Eliza had short brown hair that reached to her chin. She had a plump face and always had a smile on her face. Andrea, on the other hand, had long black hair and often wore makeup. Not just a little, but if you looked properly you could actually see her highlight line and blush. Matt was always very quiet, he had dark brown curly hair and always wore a blue cap. The first thing Eliza noticed was her new chain. I then told them about my parents' business trip.
Our conversations fell silent when the bus stopped.
We got in, showed our tickets and I sat down next to Eliza. She's been my best friend for as long as I can remember. I loved the conversations with her and was always happy to see her again.
We know each other from our parents. They met each other at some club. I went with her to the same toddler group, the same kindergarten group, the same elementary school class and now we have almost all courses together at secondary school.
After a 20 minute bus ride, we got off at our school and sat on a bench near our class as we still had 20 minutes to go.
Matt and Liam, a black-haired boy who talked a lot when the day was long, joined us. Matt kept looking at me. Pretty spooky. I ignored his piercing gaze, which was still on me, and talked to Andrea about our play, which was to be performed in 2 weeks. She was the lead and I wrote the play. Liam starred too, but he only had a supporting role (pretty unimportant). He's still
staring , a voice growled in my head. Who are you? I asked
Unimportant. This guy should look the other way or I'll beat him to pieces! The voice continued to bleat.
Luckily, at that moment, the doorbell rang and we went to our class. Great first lesson in religion, I thought sarcastically.
After Reli, we had a break. There, the 5 of us sat on the bench again and talked. Somehow there was always something to tell.
He's staring again, the voice spoke out of my head.
Tell me who are you?
And don't say it's unimportant!
So, actually, it's not important yet, but if you insist, sign this. So I'm Sela, your inner wolf. Actually, I wasn't even allowed to contact you before your 16th birthday, but this guy makes me aggressive. She continued to b***h.
The guy's name is Matt and he's a good buddy of mine, so please hold your tongue Sela! I thought so.
The guy looks at you like you're his mate, but you're not. I know that. He's just not good enough to look at you like that.
Sela! Leave it! I yelled at her.
Then the break was over. Now I had German with Mr. Baker. I hope he doesn't come back with weird spelling problems.
12:05 p.m.
I thought I had 10 minutes left. Stop by Lara. I encouraged myself.
12:07 p.m.
The lesson was about to end, I thought.
"Lara Jones, please report to the secretariat" came the sudden voice.
I hadn't done anything.. Or? No, not that I know of...
I quickly packed up my things and walked down the hallway until I came to a large oaken door.
I slowly wrapped my hand around the doorknob and pushed it down. Then I entered.
"Hello Ms Jones," the headmaster called, motioning for me to follow.
He walked ahead with heavy steps and I followed him.
He sat down at a long desk and asked me to sit in front of him.
I did too.
"So Ms Jones. So I can ease your tension a bit. You haven't done anything wrong," he said. As if by pressing a button, my pulse dropped. "All right then. Now you're probably wondering why you're sitting in front of me." Yes, that's exactly what I did, but not wanting to interrupt him, I just nodded. "First question. May I use the first form? Because that would make the whole thing easier." He asked me and I agreed. "Okay, so how do I start?" he mused. "There's a lot you don't know.
In our world there are not only people. There are also werewolves. Not the same as in those weird books, but something like that. For example, I am one and your grandfather was one too. But not insignificant, on the contrary. He was the Alpha of the Shadow Pack. My pack. When he died, your father took over his post. He and your mother were also werewolves. Maybe you can't do anything with it now, but they were mates." With this sentence I saw how he wiped a tear from the corner of his eye. "
Up until this morning, your father was still the alpha and your mother Luna of the pack." Again he stopped and tried to hold back the tears.
" Lara, please promise me you won't do anything stupid.
I hate to tell you and I never should but your parents were murdered an hour ago on the way to the airport." I stared at him. That couldn't be possible. Was he kidding me? If so, that was a real lousy joke. My principal had burst into tears by now. So this wasn't a joke.....
"Lara" he broke off. I couldn't look at him. I was too close to tears for that.
I felt a hand on mine, Poor, and less than 10 seconds later, he was sobbing all over my headmaster's jacket, "Lara, you're a werewolf too. Your parents would have told you about it, but they didn't have time for that anymore..." I didn't realize his words until seconds later.
From now on, everything will be different.
