I have never seen a change be so painful and slow. Once her wolf stood in front of me I fell to my knees. Her shift had taken place a bit faster than the rest of ours. So we were all still outside the cage. Her once full black coat was patchy with bald spots from scars that her wolf couldn’t heal. When Sonya turned to us she bared her teeth. Her eyes were so mesmerizing. They held a spark to them, a killer spark. “We should go and give her some space.” Lulu said and the three of them started up the stairs. Ryan stopped half way when he realized that I wasn’t following.
“I’m going to stay down here with her.” I told him, giving me a nod he went up the last of the stairs.
Lulu popped her head back down. “We will bring some hunt back for you.” She reassured me then with a sad smile she disappeared.
Once I heard the door close I started to remove my clothes. As I started to undress Soyna stopped growling, but held onto that predatory look. It was new to me to have someone I care about look at me with so much hate. No, I know Rose, this is Soyna. If I want to bring them together I have to get to know both. I have to work and show both that they can trust me, and each other.
I sat on the concrete floor in nothing but my boxers. I was grateful for the Groves and heating the basement. I didn’t move, I just looked at her until my change took over. My shift was quick and painless. Once I was fully shifted Sonya went on high alert. My wolf did the one thing it has never done to anyone but my father, he submitted. Dane, my wolf, got on his belly and bared his neck. Sonya looked curiously at us and stopped her growling. I don’t know for how long I layed like that. Eventually she stopped seeing us as a threat and layed down on the other side of the cage. Keeping my belly on the ground I crawled closer to her. Sonya was watching us closely and as soon as we moved she sat up. Dane whined out, all he wanted was to be close to our mate. She eyed us for a minute before she jumped up on the bed and layed back down. I whimpered to her as I laid against the bars on the cage.
On a normal full moon I would be out hunting with the pack. Not this time, this time all I wanted was to be close to her. Even if she stayed on the opposite side of the room, with bars separating us. Still this was the only place I wanted to be. I don’t know when but at some point I ended up falling asleep.
I woke up to a hot breath ruffling the fur on my neck. I knew it was her from her smell. I fought everything that was telling me to roll over, get her away from my neck, she was a threat, and I laid there. Ready to be whatever she needed, a victim, a console, or simply a presence. Soon I heard her lay down next to me. The fur on her back brushing mine through the bars. I feel back asleep more peaceful this time.
I woke up naked to the sound of the basement door opening. I spring up from the floor in alertness. Rose immediately followed, already growling at the invisible threat. Lulu comes down the stairs with a tray full of meat and a couple rabbits still intact for the most part. After realizing there was no threat I pull on my pants. I met Lulu at the bottom of the stairs and took the tray from her. Rose stopped growling but watched as if every move could be an attack. It broke me to see her like this. Every time I think I can handle it, nothing could get worse for her, it does. She is not even eighteen, she has never been a rogue, yet here she is acting as if she is the most feared predator, but also the most vulnerable prey. She shouldn’t have to be in this cage because she lost her connection. She should have to look at everyone as a threat. She should be free to run, to hunt, to be able to laugh and have fun.
Lulu held the rabbits up and explained. “These are for her. They are her favorite.” Turning to Rose she held them higher. As Lulu took a step closer Soyna took one back growling.
“It’s okay baby, she’s not going to hurt you. Nobody is ever going to hurt you while I’m here.” I try to console her. Soyna stopped growling and looked at me. Lulu threw the rabbits through the bars.
“There you go baby girl.” Lulu cooed like a mother to her child as Soyna dove for the dead animals. Moving back to me she looked up at me with shining eyes. “She is a lot calmer with you here. I have never been able to get that close. It has been so long since she looked at me without growling.” Lulu’s voice cracked towards the end. I set the tray of meat on the floor and pulled the old woman to me. Lulu began to cry as I held her. I have seen my dad hold grieving widows like this. When he would have to go tell them their mates were lost in the battle. My mother would often cry with them.
“We will get her back.” I say to her more a vow.
Sniffling she pulls away and says. “I wish you could have seen her before. She was always smiling. So trusting and a true free spirit. She would run wherever the wind took her.” I could see in her eyes the love and longing she held for that girl. It warmed me to know that Rose was never truly alone. That Doc and Lulu were watching over her as much as then could.
“I do see her like that.” I reassure her “even now she is the most beautiful wolf to me. We will show her that she doesn't need to be afraid anymore. Anyone who wants to live will not lay a finger on her for as long as I breath.”
Lulu smiles up at me. “Jack, you are a wonderful young man. You are going to be an amazing Alpha.”
“An Alpha is only as strong as the woman that stands beside him. My mate is the strongest woman I have ever met. She will be an amazing Luna.”
“Oh my” Lulu gasp “I just realized that Rose will be our Luna. Take it slow with her, Jack. I can’t stand to lose her again. A Lot of people have hurt her. She will be very hesitant.”
“I promise you I will only go as far as she will let me. I care for her too much to force anything onto her.” I vow to the woman.
She smiled at me approvingly then looked back to Sonya as she ripped the rabbit to shreds. “It usually takes her awhile to shift back. Would you like anything?”
“No ma’am I’m fine for now thank you though.” I tell her as she makes her way back up the stairs.
