#8 Training

1415 Words
"Good morning sweetheart." My dad greets me when I enter the kitchen to get some breakfast. I look at him suspiciously. “Have you changed your mind yet?” I ask him cold. He opens his mouth to say something, but nothing meaningful comes out. "Maddy, honey..." I don't need to hear his thoughts to know that nothing has changed. "I have nothing to say to you." I say emotionless. I put a few sandwiches on a plate and walk out of the kitchen. “Maddy, let me explain.” My father calls after me, but I ignore him. I've decided that until he changes his mind, I won't talk to him. Although I hope it doesn't last too long, because the bond between me and my father is actually very good. So I don't understand why he's doing this to me. My mother said he wants me to be happy, but if so, why is he forbidding me to be with my mate? I know I had my doubts myself, but that's different. Then, it would have been my own choice. I'm walking around for a bit when I hear my mother's voice. "Are you coming Maddy?" She asks. I snap out of my thoughts. "Oh yeah, sorry, I didn't keep track of the time." I apologize and walk upstairs with her. When I got home last night, we agreed to start my training today. I'm pretty nervous. I have no idea how my mother wants to train my powers. "To understand how I can best help you, I need to know what your powers feel like." She says as she closes her office door behind her. "What do you mean? I hear thoughts." I answer. My mother nods, and we sit at her desk. "Yeah I know that. But how does it feel to you? How does that feel when you hear the thoughts?" She asks. I have to think for a moment. I actually haven't paid attention to that yet. Let's try this, listen to my thoughts.” My mother says when she realizes that I don't know how to answer her question. Focus on my voice. How does it feel for your body, for your mind? "I think like a kind of mind link? But just a little bit different?" I answer doubtfully. "Diffrent how?" She asks. I think again. It isn't easy, and we haven't even started yet. "A mind link sounds more like it's aimed at me. Thoughts are more... like floating in the air? They sound like they're not meant for me." I finally say. It's the best description I can think of. She nods understandingly. I breathe a sigh of relief. I wouldn't know how else to describe it. It feels a bit like I've passed the first assignment. I feel Maddow chuckle. "Okay okay, so what does it feel like when Maddow blocks out the thoughts?" She asks. "Then I don't feel anything, as if they weren't there." I answer. Fortunately, that question is not that difficult. "Alright, I want to talk to Maddow for a moment." She says. I'm surprised, but let Maddow come forward. I see her smiling when she sees Maddow in control. “Hi Maddow.” She says. "Hello Luna. What can I do for you?" Maddow asks. "Please, it's just Haily." My mother answers before she gets to the point. "I need you not to help Maddy during training. If you help her too much, she won't be able to learn to control her powers properly." My mother told me. Maddow nods. "But of course, I understand." Maddow replies. I feel she's a little disappointed. She was really looking forward to training together. "Don't worry Maddow, once I get it under control there will come a time when we can train our powers together." I tell her. Maddow withdraws, and I look expectantly at my mother. “Okay, focus on my thoughts.” She says and I nod determinedly. I hear her start to hum a nursery rhyme. I wait patiently for her to tell me what to do. “Now, take a deep breath, focus, and mentally flip a switch.” She says. “A… switch?” I ask. "She means you have to imagine that you can shut out the thoughts with that switch." Maddow clarifies. I can still hear my mother's hum when I take a deep breath and close my eyes. I imagine a light switch that I can turn on and off. I flip the switch but nothing happens. I try again. But that attempt also failed. After a few failed attempts, I started to get frustrated. The only thing I have achieved so far is that her thoughts are a little less loud. "Arg!!! I'll never do it alone!!" I shout in frustration and cross my arms angrily. "Come on Maddy, what did you expect, that you succeeded with the first try?" My mother asks and I look at her sullenly. "It takes time to get your powers under control. That takes practice." My mother says when I don't answer. I sigh dramatically. Of course, I know that it is unrealistic to expect that I will succeed the first time I try. But I'm still a little disappointed that I can't do it right away. "Shall we stop, or do you want to try again?" My mother asks. “Let me try again.” I answer, taking a deep breath and trying to relax. The same song fills my thoughts again, and I turn on that imaginary switch once again. I look at my mother in surprise. To my astonishment, her humming is now just a whisper. "Did it work ?" She asks when she sees my face. "Not completely, but it's more like a whisper." I say with a broad smile. She looks at me proudly. "That's great! Well done!" She says happily. Her compliment makes my smile grow even more. She looks at her watch. "Let's call it a day. It's time for lunch." She says. “You did great honey.” She speaks and gently squeezes my arm. She gets up to walk out of the room. “Mom, why doesn't Dad want me to be with my mate?” I ask before she can open the door. She pauses at the door and holds the doorknob. When she turns around, she has a remorseful look in her eyes. "He just doesn't want you to get hurt. He's trying to protect you." She answer eventually. "To protect me? Why do I need protection from my mate? Shouldn't he love me unconditionally? Isn't that what the mate bond takes care of?" I ask confused. I do not get it. I've always been told that a mate loves you unconditionally. That that person is the most important thing in your life. Why would I need protection for that? I see my mother searching for words. I try to read her mind, but all I hear is humming. She found a way to shut me out. She looks at me disapprovingly. "Don't try to pry into my thoughts." She says a bit angrily. I look at the ground in shame. "I'm sorry. But please tell me why Daddy thinks I need protection from Kevin." I say again. I hear her sigh. "It's not so much for Kevin, but for his father. Alpha Jeffrey." She says. She continues before I can ask what he has to do with our mate bond. "Your father is afraid that Kevin looks like his father. Alpha Jeffrey is a ruthless man and only cares about himself. He is afraid that you will get hurt." She explains. "Okay, I get it. But that's not fair. He doesn't know him at all. Maybe he's not like his father." I say. "I know, and I already told him. You'll have to be patient. I'm sure your father will eventually change his mind." She says. And with those words, she walks out of her office. "Are you coming?" She shouts, and I run after her. As she locks the door, my phone vibrates. #unknown number My beautiful mate, meet me tonight at 8 pm at the border near the lake. I stare at the screen in bewilderment. How did he get my number? "Who is that?" My mother asks curious. I quickly put my phone back in my pocket. "Um, no one special." I answer quickly and walk past her downstairs.
