First Mistake
Werewolves... the most territorial and barbaric of shapeshifters. War after war, battle after battle...it was their way of life, the only thing they knew. Many died at the hands of their own greed, others perished defending all that they’d built. Now, it’s the twenty-first century and the Gods have finally intervened. The werewolf kind has fallen to the brink of extinction, unable to bear offspring. With a curse on their hands, they’re forced to squash their violent nature and must dedicate their lives to hunting down a species that’s supposed to be long forgotten. Breeders. - - When Zavia’s eyes fluttered open, the sunlight drifting in through the windows was blinding, striking her straight in those bright amber eyes. She twisted onto her side, her fingers sluggishly plucking her honey brown strands from between her lips. She forgot to close the blinds yet again. Curling into a ball, she hunted for the duvet. When her patting hands found nothing next to her, her brows furrowed, eyes snapping open. She sat up so quick it dizzied her and glared at the duvet sitting next to her feet. Groaning, she ran a hand through her hair then stretched her arms, a yawn leaving her lips. Her head was throbbing like crazy. Last night, her best friend Brenda had convinced her to drink far too much. Still, it was fun...the most fun she had in a while actually. Her eyes fluttered lazily then darted, staring at her daily dose of sunshine: Liam Pain. There he was...countless photos of her boss sitting on her walls. She stared into the fierce eyes of Liam himself and felt her body quickly wake up, lips stretching into a silly grin. But in the next moment, it was gone, replaced by a look of sheer terror. She blinked once, then twice before bolting up from the bed, eyes on the clock. Her blood had gone cold. “I’m late!!!” She was to arrive at work by 7 and prepare his breakfast then go straight to cleaning but it was already past 10:00am! “Three hours...” She mumbled, hopping on a leg next to the bathroom door as she dragged off her pyjama bottoms. “Three f*****g hours...” She was going to be so dead if Liam was already awake by the time she arrived! Her shower wasn't a long one, barely even ten minutes before she was rushing out of there. For the first time since she had begun working as his housekeeper, she didn’t spend half an hour picking clothes or another half hour doing makeup. Today, she was a mess, so scared to lose her job that it felt like her mind was spinning anticlockwise. "I don't like tardiness, Miss Brooks. If you fail to arrive on time, consider yourself fired that very morning. Don’t even bother showing up. Got it?" Those were the words carved into her mind a dozen times over. Plus, on her first day of work, she remembered what he said to her the moment she stepped through his door: "I don't like filth, Miss Brooks. If there's even a speck of dust by the time I return, you'll have to clean everything three times over." Liam wasn’t all perfect like they portrayed him on TV. He owned many companies yet he barely went to work and worse, he had no regard for anyone...none. She didn’t mind how strict he was with her though. In fact, she liked everything he said as long as it was to her. But after today, she probably wouldn’t even get to see him face to face anymore. And Brenda who went through hoops to get her this job, was going to be mad as hell when she found out she lost it. “Oh, f**k me...” She groaned. - - It was almost 11 when Zavia ran for Liam’s front door, breathing hard. She had just gotten off a cab and was now preparing to meet her doom. She fished her key from her pocket and fumbled to unlock to the door. It slipped through her trembling fingers twice before she finally stepped in, eyes warily scanning the place. Liam was definitely at home, he almost always was on a Monday. But the windows were still closed. It made her uneasy. Carefully setting her handbag on the couch, she nervously patted her hair down then clamped her palms together, gazing up the stairs. She was sweating, struggling to stop herself from ripping her hair out. "...If you fail to arrive on time, consider yourself fired that very morning." His voice replayed in her head and her shoulders slumped, teeth biting down on her lip. What was she supposed to do? Head upstairs to greet him as always? He never answered but that was the routine. Shaking her head, she thought against it, thinking it was better to stall and busy herself with housework. If she did a good job, he’d turn a blind eye this once, right? When Zavia finished cooking, cleaning, laundry and lastly showering, it was already late in the evening. Strangely, Liam still hadn't set a foot downstairs...not even for dinner. Was he actually sleeping? She prayed to the heavens that he was. Sighing, she walked into the kitchen, dragging her body like heavy weight. She pulled on the fridge handle, grabbing a bottled water and twisting off the cap. But before the rim could touch her lips, a hot breath down her nape made her freeze. A figure had crept up behind her without even the slightest sound. Liam stood close, so close that she could feel his heat radiating off his body and hitting her own. But even as her mind threatened to explode from the proximity, he pressed closer. A flush crept up her neck, the stench of alcohol bombarding her. "You broke the rules, Miss Brooks."
