"What lady?" Cameron asked, his eyebrows drawn in confusion.
Lockhart grunted, trying to straighten up but immediately grabbed his side again, throwing a dirty glare in the warlock's direction.
"Loretta Woodland. 2 weeks ago, she came to my house. She said she wanted the courage to fulfill her desire of killing her husband and his family. I told her she could have it if she completed my conditions. She slept with me and I gave her the ring."
"But who told her about the ring?" I asked.
"That is a mystery to me too. She seemed and sounded so robotic. As if she'd been hypnotised," he grunted before straightening up.
I looked at Cameron and he looked at me.
We needed to meet this lady.
"In a tragic turn of events, Loretta 'Lola' Woodland, wife of Haris Woodland and daughter-in-law of the CEO of W Group has allegedly poisoned to her in-laws, including the Chairman's wife, son and their two daughters. Chairman Ken Woodland is naturally devastated and will hold a press conference sometime next week. We have the SCPD chief on line with us...'
I stared hard at the brunette lady whose mugshots were being taken.
"Do you know her?" Cameron asked.
I shook my head. I had never seen her before in my life. She didn't look normal either. Her eyes were swollen and absolutely empty. She didn't look like she regretted anything she did either.
I scratched my head. "How do we find out why she did this?"
Cameron smiled. "Tonight. Let's meet the presiding team's chief."
"As if they'll let us walk in and... oh," I realized what he meant by the look he was giving me. He was about to hypnotise the chief.
No biggie for him.
Night fell and we drove outside the SCPD. It was a moderate glass building, with sliding doors and a neat outlook. Cameron parked the car and we climbed out. There were rarely any people out here. Just an emergency police mobile.
We stepped inside. It was largely empty since the team in-charge of the case must be in the interrogation room. I heard that the interrogations began today only because Lola had fainted the day she was to be questioned. She was in the hospital and was only able to speak yesterday. So they had scheduled an interrogation today.
Cameron approached an officer and easily hypnotised him. I waited at a distance, taking the surroundings in. I had never been to a human police station before. Of course I never had to. Because I never did bad stuff. And even if I did, who cares? It's not like I was human.
The hallway was dark, with only a single light switched on. It was casting shadows on the walls, rocking the whole creepy vibe. The desks and chairs were all empty. I guessed the rest of the teams rushed to the interrogation room as well.
Real geniuses.
Back at Pixie Island, I think I remembered the King having a royal counsel and several other lawmakers but no pixie police. I had to laud the human race for having come up with such a force that made people abide by the rules. Had there been one, I wouldn't have gotten falsely accused.
"I got it," Cameron's voice pulled me out of my thoughts. My eyes snapped to his face in the dark.
"What did he tell you?"
"Everybody went to the interrogation room. Which is weird," he frowned. "But I can freeze everybody except Lola for 30 minutes so you can take talk to her."
I nodded. "Okay, we can do that. But the question is, how are we going to get the others away from her?"
He smirked. "That's easy."
Before I could say anything, he walked over to the fire alarm and easily broke the glass. He grabbed the lever and pulled it down. Immediately, alarms began to ring throughout the building as well as a red light.
I covered my ears. Doors opened and multiple men began to run out into the dimly lit hallway. Some of them clad in police uniforms. Cameron raised his hands and suddenly, everybody stopped moving.
It was like one of those dummy challenges these humans had come up with once. Except for the fact that everybody had really frozen.
"Come on. I'll unfreeze Lola for you," he led me down the hall and opened a door. We stepped into a dark corridor, a policeman and a few office workers stood frozen in a corner. I walked around them and followed Cameron towards another door.
When we stepped inside, I realized we were actually in an interrogation room. The team members stood frozen in place as they watched the monitor, where I could see Lola from different angles.
These humans are really thorough with their investigations.
I looked up at the thick glass to peer into the room. Lola sat by herself on a chair, her hands handcuffed in front of her. Her eyes were downcast and it looked like she was pretty much drugged. But I knew she wasn't.
Cameron stepped inside and I followed him. The room was dark and filled with cameras. He snapped his fingers and Lola began to move.
Her eyes looked here and there before they fell on me.
"Do you know me? Lola?" I asked, going over and standing across from her behind the table.
She looked at me with those lifeless eyes. My heart squeezed. Just what did she had to go through to look like this? Eventually?
She took a quiet a few minutes before shaking her head, her hair falling all over her face like a brown curtain.
"Then do you know what this is?" I pulled out the ring and placed it in front of her.
Her eyes widened when she looked at it before screaming and pushing back in her chair.
"That thing! That thing!" She screamed, falling to the ground.
Cameron used his magic to make constraints around her before making her sit in the chair again. She looked so scared. She was trembling all over.
I sat on the table and tried to calm her down. "Look, it's okay. I'm not here to hurt you with this okay? Just answer me please. How did you know about the ring?"
"H-he told me," she whispered, her eyes darting around the room as if she was expecting something dangerous to pop out and eat her.
"He who?" I pressed.
"He who knows everything. He who is so cunning. He who must have blood," she grabbed my shirt and tugged me forward. "The Master."
I frowned. "Master?"
"Why did you kill your family?" Cameron asked, walking over to where I was perched on the wooden table. I pried her hands off my shirt and straightened it.
She looked at him, here eyes still opened to an abnormal extent. This lady was not in her right mind at all. "Because they deserved it."
"And why did they deserve it?"
"Because my son had to live. He must live away from all of them. He must be safe." Her fingers were practically bleeding from the way she kept rubbing her nails together.
"What did they do so bad?"
"They refused to give them up to My Master. The scrolls. The scrolls," she trailed off, scratching her hair.
I groaned inwardly. She wasn't telling us anything worth knowing. I grabbed her shoulders and made her look at me. I dared myself to stare into her wide wild eyes.
"Who is this Master you speak of and what does he want?!" I shouted.
She smiled. Like actually smiled. Before laughing. Then she paused and placed her sick hand on my cheek.
"He wants you Shia. He wants you and the emerald," she whispered, her wild eyes becoming darker.
"You killed my Grammy didn't you?" I asked through gritted teeth. I'll set the record straight with this Master once I'm done with this crazy lady.
"I had to. It was his order. I must do what he wants me to," she smiled again, bearing her yellow teeth. "My son shall live a thousand years then."
"You b***h!" I screamed, pushing her back and she fell over on her back, still laughing.
Cameron quickly grabbed her by the collar and yanked her up. "Tell us where to find him!"
Before she could say anything, a huge bang diverted our attention followed by loud, shrill multiple fire alarms. Cameron looked at me.
"Fire. Somebody set fire to this place."
"We're taking her with us," I looked at Lola, who was still laughing like a lunatic.
Cameron nodded but before we could apparate or do anything else, somebody fired a gunshot.
My eyes widened as a tiny bloodied circle appeared on Lola's forehead.
"Master!" She shrieked gleefully before going limp. Cameron let her fall to the ground.
"Somebody's here," he said, his eyes fixated on the glass window into the interrogation which had broken because of the gunshot.
I ran out towards the door and threw it open, stumbling straight into a hard chest.
"Oof!" I groaned, falling down with the body.
Great. I collided with a frozen police official.
"Sorry," I mumbled, quickly getting up to chase after Cameron when I heard him reply.
"Stop right there!" A deep, familiar voice yelled.
My eyes widened and I stopped in my tracks, turning around.
It was him. Dylan.
I watched in utter shock as he stood up, dusting off his leather jacket and jeans. His eyes zeroed on me and widened in recognition.
"You again!"
I couldn't believe my eyes. How could he have unfrozen when everybody was still the way they were.
The fire alarms caught his attention and he looked at a frozen officer, his eyes widening.
"The hell is this?!" He cried out in disbelief. He ran over to the nearest man and tried to shake him. "Marcus! Marcus, can you hear me? Hillary! Move you guys! What's wrong?"
When none of them replied, he ran over to me and grabbed me by the shoulders. "What is going on?! Tell me!"
His golden eyes told me everything. He was scared.
I stuttered, looking for a reply that would make sense when I heard a whirring sound. The door behind Dylan broke and a black thing crawled out.
Dylan turned around and gasped. I quickly grabbed him and pushed him behind me.
"Just stay there." I muttered, narrowing my eyes.
It was a lurker. Lurkers were evil beings with a body that was shaped like a human's but too abnormal in figure. They had long arms and legs and fingers. Their eyes were fiery red and a mouth filled with sharp teeth.
They were dangerous and feeded on human flesh.
It hissed in my direction before pouncing on me. I tried to use a burst of magic to keep it off but it dodged it, grabbing me by the ankle and throwing me on the ground. I rolled over, expecting it to attack me with its long nails almost instantly but it didn't.
I looked up just in time to see it rush towards Dylan, who had taken his g*n out and was feverishly shooting at it.
It isn't here to kill me? How is this possible? Lurkers only kill targeted victims. They don't go on rampages.
I quickly placed my hand on the ground and made vines spring out. They wrapped themselves around its ankles and threw it backwards.
I quickly got up and ran over, sending a huge wave of fire its way.
Its yell was high pitch. It was so loud it even drowned out the noise of the fire alarms. More vines sprung out and wrapped themselves around his arms and neck region. I tightened their hold on it, making it choke.
Its unusual behaviour did not pass my eyes. It kept trying to reach out to Dylan with its pointy, knife-like fingernails, in an attempt to get to him. This was making me even more confused. The vines and fire finally reduced it to dust and fell away.
I looked at Dylan and he stood staring at me unable to process what he'd just seen. But I cared less about what he thought of me right now. Whoever sent this lurker wanted Dylan dead.
Not me. But Dylan.
I ran over to him.
"What are you?"
