Hannah could see the reaction around the room, none of them knew Lilith was pregnant. That could only mean one thing, Lilith was targeted because she was a witch. If the culprit knew of the baby, the attack would have been much worse. She may not have had the chance to save her daughter. Liliths life was no longer in danger from the poison, Hannah knew that when she left her side. She needed to gauge the reaction in the room.
Samuel was the first to speak, he was still in shock “how can she be pregnant? She can’t be, I mean it’s impossible right? Centuries of proof exist.” It was almost as if he were talking to himself. His statements weren’t directed towards anyone in the room, but he said what they were all thinking. Hannah slowly raised her hand and placed it on Samuels arm “Lilith is a witch, there has never been a pairing like this before. I knew it was a possibility but I didn’t want to get your hopes up.” Samuel absorbed her words and understood why she didn’t say anything.
No one left the Betas house, it had been hours since Hannah had arrived. They took shifts looking in on Lilith, her fever finally broke but she was still asleep. The color in her lips had returned and her breathing was no longer labored, her rest was finally peaceful. The room seemed restless as the four of them changed locations and paced the floor. “Who died?” All eyes were on Lilith. “That’s not funny” Samuel said as he ran to her, dropping to his knees he grabbed her waist and hugged her tightly. His cheek rested on her belly, Liliths hands rested atop his head. They stayed like that for a few minutes and they were left alone in their embrace.
Samuel finally stood, he approached Hannah and whispered to her, it was almost inaudible “please check the baby.” Hannah bowed her head, she again placed her hands on Lilith and spoke the same incantation. They all waited breathlessly while Hannah concentrated. A smile swept across her face and her eyes became glossy. “The baby is fine”. Samuel let out a gush of air “thank you” he said while looking up to the heavens.
Lilith looked around the room, Thadius held Anna’s hand, he had a slight smile on his face but worry could be seen in his eyes. Anna was crying happy tears and Samuel was again on his knees in front of Lilith. He was holding her in a tight embrace with his cheek where the baby was located. Lilith was in complete disbelief, did she hear her mother’s words correctly? “baby?”
