first days and new nightmares
Olivia's shoes echoed down the locker-lined hallway with every step. Classes were starting and doors were swung shut slowly as she passed them. She caught snipits as each door closed. "Welcome back to a new year bulldogs, hope everyone had a great break." She had been in one of those classrooms a few minutes ago, doodling triquetra's and pentagrams in the back of her notebook, bored out of her mind. The PA clapped on with a static screech calling her to the guidance office. Getting called to the guidance office on the first day back at school had already murdered her chance of a social life for the next year. She slammed the guidance wing doors open and the secretary nearly jumped out of her skin. She walked past the secretary who was currently cutting her wrinkled eyes at her and clenched her fist tightly whilst raising it to knock the guidance office door. Mr Ortega swung the door open and stepped aside for her to walk to the chair in front of his desk. "You called me to the guidance office on the first freaking day of school? Do you not want me to have any friends? Like at all?" Mr Ortega smiled brightly at her as she glided over to the chair and sat in it. "Welcome back Olivia." She felt her eyes roll without warning. In the corner of the room stood Mr's Peach, the old school nurse, the chair Olivia was sat on used to belong to her before she died. "I apologize Olivia, I tried to stop him from summoning you but hiding his hall pass pad and trapping his tie in the desk drawer just didn't do the trick this time. I can not believe he had the secretary call you over the PA that must have been mortifying." As she sat down Olivia struck a quick smile towards Mr's peach. Olivia was clairvoyant which meant that she could see, hear and communicate with ghosts. Olivia's guidance counselor Mr Ortega didn't know that his office was haunted, he was normal which meant that he didn't even believe in the paranormal plane. "I called you down here so we could have a chat, are you ready for the new school year?" Olivia slouched down into her chair. "No but it's here so hey, just go with it right?" Mr Ortega sorted through some papers and folders on his desk. "I hope it's a good year Olivia, how was your summer?" "The usual. Seances, digging demons up and worked on my novel." he approvingly nodded. "I called you in today because i wanted to touch base with you on some things." She scrunched her eyebrows. "And it couldn't wait until tomorrow when I'm sort of settled back in?" He gave her a wry smile. "It's the second period isn't it? I think that I have waited for long enough." Olivia slumped sinking further down into her chair. She had been seeing Mr Ortega since she had started high school because the school academic and social system had classed her as a troubled teen. She had gotten into multiple fights in middle school. The first few appointments she had spent ramping about various other kids at school. And while it had felt really good to get everything off her chest about her classmates she still couldn't control her anger when she felt like sinking her fist into their faces. Mr Ortega's advice each time would be to turn the other cheek. It was infuriating. Mrs peach had given her enough ammo about her assailants to see her through the entirety of high school. "Olivia, are you listening?" She hadn't been. "Yes sir, new year, new me." "Yes but let's not forget about the last two years, we can't have recurring incidents like those. He opened up her file folder and scanned through it. "For instance, let us not put hair removal cream in girls shampoo this year. Or spike the football teams cooler with hot sauce." "It was chilli powder actually," Mr Ortega ignored her correction. "No more threatening to shrink freshmen and step on them." Mrs Peach snorted in amusement. Olivia shuffled in her seat. "What can I do then? Smile every time people call me names and snicker at me as I walk through the halls of my own personal hell?" She said frustrated. "That is an excellent idea Olivia." Mrs Peach spoke up. "He means it Olivia, the principal came in for a meeting first thing this morning and she wants to expel you." "I'll try my best." She forced out. "Please do your best, if you let them your peers would be nicer to you." His words roused a groan from Mrs peach, she even knew that it was a lie. Olivia's eyes narrowed and she tightened her jaw. "You think I should be nicer? Nicer to teachers who stand and watch people try to bully me until I retaliate and then they hun for me? Or the principal who thinks I'm just a trouble maker? Or maybe you are talking about my classmates who all insult me and sneer?" "Oh Olivia, I promise you won't even remember any of those horrible children when you leave this place." Mrs Peach said. Mr Ortega pushed his chair back and looked at me. "Have you ever just tried telling the people that upset you to stop? I think you should give it a try." She sat up and her jaw dropped in faux amazement. "Wow you're so smart, why didn't I think of that?" She said mockingly. "I'll just use my manners and the world will be kinder." He lowered his head and peered over his oval shaped glasses at her. "Has what you've been doing so far worked any better?" She crossed her arms and hoofed looking in the other direction. "Just try it one time and see what happens. If it doesn't work there's no harm done." "I have tried being nice, they just laughed and threw stuff like stones at me and the teachers just watched." "And how long ago was this?" She shrugged her shoulders and huffed. "I was eight." "That was years ago, do you not think that they have changed by now?" "No! They've just gotten bigger ammo." She clenched her fists in attempt to keep herself in check. There was no point in showing her emotions today. It would only go in her file. Mr Ortega closed her file. "Let's focus on the fresh school year. Don't antagonise the other students. Don't give the teachers a hard time and try and stay out of trouble please." She stared at his desk and clipped a nod at him. She just wanted to go back to class now. "Okay, we'll talk more in our next session. Go and get a pass from the receptionist." He jumped to his feet and lead Olivia to the door. As she reached the door Mrs Peach spoke up. "Olivia, it gets better, high school isn't forever dear." She knew that Mrs Peach believed that but she didn't think she would ever have a normal life, she would still be clairvoyant and be able to communicate with ghosts no matter how many years go by. She would always be different. The secretary was busy with a male student when Mary came out. She hung back to wait her turn but soon realised that she might be a while. She was showing the guy a map of the school. The secretary had a monotone voice and nearly put Olivia to sleep every time she heard her speak.
