Chapter 7: A Wish

2007 Words
" Mirabel!!." A husky voice called out to me directly near my ear making me jump up in fright with my pulse racing frantically. Ashley and I had separated ways after our class in the afternoon. She went back home saying she was going somewhere while I had to turn in at work. I had just finished my shift and was on my way home when suddenly someone spoke from behind, startling me. I placed a hand on my still racing heart in fear and I had finally managed to calm it down but my heartbeat accelerated again when i turned and realized who it was that had frightened me. Ramzan..... He looked so sexy and mysterious enshrouded in the cloak of the night. He c****d his head slightly to the left while his Amber eyes perused up and down my body. "Sorry for scaring you I had been calling out to you from way across the street but it seems like you couldn't hear me." He had one hand in his jean pocket, the other holding a large paper bag. The slight breeze blowing caressed his hair, his eyes locked on me like a hawk sighting it's prey. I shyly looked down before replying "It's alright. What are you doing here?" "Well, i was coming out of the diner across the street from your cafe when I saw you heading home from work and since I had something to discuss with you so I called out to you," He says while falling into step beside me. "I heard you met Evan?" "Yeah, we met at school together with Ashley. He seemed pretty nice." "He is when he wants to be but most of the time he's out seeking trouble." " Really?" I asks laughingly " Yes, he looks like a gentleman but that guy sure is a joker" He says with his curved in a slight smile. " Wow, if you didn't just tell that to me I could have still been deceived by his appearance." " Don't mind what I said, he is a great guy despite his shortcomings." " That's great. Besides Ramzan, is everything okay with you? You skipped quite a few classes" "Yeah, all is good. I was busy with something extremely important, but it's been sorted out now." "That's great. It won't look good for your results if you keep skipping classes you know?" " Alright, I have heard you Lady Mirabel" he says in a playful tone while bending over slightly to my eye level " I will make sure it doesn't happen again" Upon seeing his face at a close level to mine, my face started feeling hot. It was at this moment I was grateful for having a darker skin color because it became less obvious when I am embarrassed. " Did Evan tell you about the school field trip we are to register for?" " Yes he informed me about it" he replies nonchalantly " So, will you be attending?" I ask Him with a slight hint of eagerness in my voice. He looks at me for a while before replying with " since it seems like you really want me to attend, I guess I will have to go too. I will be in your care during that period, hope you don't mind" " Okay then, I don't mind" I say calmly but deep down I was screaming silently and happily. We walked in silence, both of us lost in thought or at least i was. I had been feeling so uncertain and insecure this past few days, but the moment I saw Ramzan, all those negative feelings disappeared. He hadn't even said anything regarding his feelings for me or anything, but just being in his presence was reassuring enough for me. Is this how being in love is? Did all negative feelings just disappear when you were with the person you loved? it was a nice and comforting feeling, probably what being a part of a family would feel like. I had only ever wondered about my real family at the beginning, but after spending years in the orphanage i stopped bothering about it. The childish hope that my family would come to claim me one day also gradually dwindled. I was brought out of my thoughts when we stopped walking. That was when I noticed we hadn't been heading in the direction of our apartment at all instead we were standing in front of a fountain. "uh... what are we doing here?" I asked Him. He grabbed my hand before pulling me to sit at a bench facing the fountain, with the beautiful night sky and twinkling lights serving as a perfect backdrop. He raised the bag in his hand. "Care to join me? I figured you'd be hungry so I got a double serving at Arno's." "Thanks" I say before collecting it from him "I just realized how hungry I am." I took a bite of the triple layered burger sandwich and I moaned in pleasure. " This is divine, the cheese inside is so yummy" I say excitedly He chuckled silently before saying " since you like it so much I guess I have to get lt for you once again." " Oh, I am sorry. I didn't mean it like that" " Like what?" " I didn't mean to be a nuisance or bother to you" I say before continuing eating. After some minutes I was brought out of my daze when a penny suddenly appeared in my line of view". "Penny for you thoughts?" He asks "Sorry?" I said after swallowing the food in my mouth. "You seemed so lost in thought that You didn't even notice we were going in a different direction." Ramzan said while looking at me. "Oh it's nothing. Don't worry about it." I said then tried to change the topic. " Tell me about yourself instead." He didn't really say much about himself. he spoke about his family instead, but i listened with great interest. It fascinated me that he knew his family history and was able to trace his family line back to his ancestors. "There!" Ramzan suddenly said "you're doing it again, being lost in thought." "Oh, sorry. I was just thinking about how nice it must be nice to know who you are and your family history." I said with a laugh. "i've never thought of it like that. It's the kind of thing people always take for granted. I guess it's true people never really appreciate the things they have, but focus more on the things they don't have." Our gazes met and held for what felt like a long time when it was only a few seconds. i looked down, suddenly feeling shy. "i guess you're right. we're always looking at the things we don't have." When i iooked up, it was to find him staring at me. His gaze enraptured me, eyes a swirling mist of different shades of brown. I found it difficult to look away, that was until i felt a light brush at the side of my mouth. Flustered, I looked away Immediately and I was also sure my cheeks were blazing red right now. Thank god it was dark and it wouldn't be so obvious. "you had a little something there." He says while pointing at the side of his own mouth. I must've gotten a morsel of food stuck on my face" my face darkened with embarrassment. I thanked him and we continued talking and eating. I realized Ramzan was really fun to talk to. The first impression he gave was of someone cold, but he wasn't really. He was more like as though he acts cold to keep people at bay. " it's so late! I guess we better get going." i said after we'd both finished eating. We both stood up and while I was bending over to grab my bag he suddenly said "wait just a moment," He dug around in his jean pocket until he brought out something which he gave to me. "A penny?" I asked, feeling a little uncertain. He placed both his hands on my shoulders, steering me towards the fountain. "make a wish." "You don't seem like the type to believe in all this stuff," I say while gesturing towards the fountain. "and don't tell me you had this all planned out. Since I definitely know that people rarely walk around with coins nowadays" He chuckled, "I honestly was just going with the flow." I laughed too. I went along with him and flung the coin in the fountain whilst making my wish. I just wished for the impossible, knowing there was no likelihood of it ever coming true. "Am i allowed to know what you wished for?" Ramzan asked. " Nope. It's a secret" I said with a cheeky smile before skipping happily away from the fountain "let's go already. It's getting darker" I call out to him We spoke a lot too on our way home, about our upcoming field trip and other stuffs. It seemed Ramzan knew more about the place and hearing him talk about it was making me anticipate the field trip more when i wasn't all that thrilled about it in the beginning. He walked me to my door where we bade each other goodnight and he went on ahead upstairs to his condo. Ashley, who I had expected to be eagerly awaiting my return to interrogate me about where I was and why I returned late was fast asleep. She usually didn't sleep early. What exactly did she do today that made her so tired? I decided to ask her tomorrow. It wasn't until I had gotten ready and lay in bed that I allowed myself to think about the wish I had made earlier. It wasn't something i'd given a whole lot of thought to, so i had no idea why i made the wish. perhaps it was talking to Ramzan that had made me make such an uncharacteristic wish tonight. I had made a wish to know about my true identity. We both stood up. "Wait just a moment," Ramzan dug around in his jean pocket until he brought out something. He gave it to me. "A penny?" I asked, feeling a little uncertain. He placed both hands on my shoulders, steering me towards the fountain. "Make a wish." He chuckled, "I was just going with the flow." I laughed too. I went along with him and flung the coin in the fountain whilst making my wish. I just wished for the impossible, knowing there was no likelihood of it ever coming true. How wrong I was. "Am I allowed to know your wish?" Ramzan asked. "Nope." I said with a cheeky smile. "Let's go." We spoke too on our way home, about our upcoming field trip. It seemed Ramzan knew more about the place. Hearing him talk about it was making me anticipate the field trip when I wasn't all that thrilled about it in the beginning. Ramzan walked me to my door before we said goodnight and separated ways.
