Chapter One
Keiera's POV
Pregnant.
"I'm pregnant?" I muttered, asking rhetorically.
The words sounded strange to my ears and had a funny taste in my mouth.
"Congratulations Mrs. Flinch, you're three months gone." The Doctor greeted with a warm smile.
I couldn't get myself to return his hospitality and felicitations, the world was spinning rapidly around me and I seem to be the only one that stood still, unmoved.
"You're not sick with malaria nor down with any sort of fever, we've run the tests and the results show you're pregnant." He explained carefully, seeing the look of disbelief in my eyes.
"You could run it again, I have no problem with that, I don't think I'm.." My voice trailed off as I swallowed the dreaded words.
"Pregnant." I added, finishing my sentences in a bit of a whisper.
The Doctor chuckled amusedly, it was obvious he had experience with people like me who found it hard to believe they were pregnant.
"I'll bring the results to you personally so you'll believe me, I know you're overjoyed and you just can't believe it at the moment." He offered.
Before I could decline, he briskly walked away leaving me to my thoughts. I laid back on the bed and stared at the ceiling of the ward. A nauseating feeling invading my throat and I had the urge to puke but it was suddenly suppressed by the churn in the pit of my stomach. Following the sickening feeling that dampened my already dim aura accompanied with frequent malaise and overall body weakness I had no choice than to visit the hospital for a test and treatment of the possible outcome.
Pregnancy was a thing of joy, a woman's most coveted possession but I was unsure if it was applicable to me at that moment, my thoughts were interrupted by the Doctor's entrance, he held a piece of paper in his hands and began to explain the test result to me, proving that I was indeed pregnant but I had zoned out, wondering what would become of me.
"Alpha Kyan would be delighted at this news."
I snapped out of my self-absorbed state and shot thr Doctor a glare, taken aback by my sudden attitude, he stared at me blankly. I forced a smile.
"Actually, I was thinking I would tell him this myself, you know, as a surprise?" I lied, holding my breath so he wouldn't see through me, he laughed.
"Of course, as long as you return at the appropriate time for antenatal and follow all precautions." He agreed.
I let out the breath I was holding and nodded my head, he vouched to write me some prescriptions and multivitamins that I need to use before I could be discharged. I nodded and watched him leave, leaning back to the bed and trailing back to my thought, I clicked my tongue.
'Alpha Kyan.' I muttered to myself.
I am married to the alpha of the pack but I dreaded telling him that I was pregnant, I wasn't sure of what his reactions would be or how it would affect our already forced relationship. His desperation to get rid of me wasn't hidden so a baby's involvement would not change things either. My phone rang by the bedside and I flinched.
"Hello." My voice sounding shaky as I spoke.
The line went flat and I checked the phone to see a short but concise message from Clarice; the head maid.
Miss Andrea is back, you're expected to be back from the hospital by now to show her some respect and hospitality, if it weren't for her you wouldn't have a husband.
As my fate beckons on me, I sighed and stood up from the hospital bed, the nurses tried to persuade me to stay a little longer but I insisted on leaving. I reminded the Doctor of our agreement on the silence about the pregnancy before drowsily leaving the hospital. It was no news that Andrea; an esteemed guest of my husband and his entire family save for his grandmother who adores me was coming today and her arrival necessitated my presence as well.
I wasn't assigned a driver that day and had to take a taxi to the hospital since 'all drivers would transport the welcoming entourage' for Andrea. I boarded a taxi to the airport where everyone was already waiting for Andrea, I arrived just in time to see her being swoon over by everyone, including Ryan. She looked more beautiful in person than in the pictures of her that I have seen and while everyone else was all over her, I stood back, feeling weak and nauseous.
Clarice threw me a dirty look as I smiled weakly in response to Andrea's warm hug and it took all the self-control I had not to puke in response to her fragrant perfume.
"It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Clarice have told me a lot about you and so did Kyan." Andrea intoned, her voice silky and sonorous to the ear.
I could only nod to acknowledge her words as I felt dizzy and could barely stand straight, I could feel Ryan's hostile stare towards me and Clarice didn't bother to hide her disdain.
"Let's go home Andrea, you've had a long journey." Kyan suggested.
I watched as he took her hands and walked her to his car, they rode together and I had to ride with the servants since that was the only means of transportation prepared for me. It thundered and began to rain heavily on our way back home and I could only stare blankly out the window panes, thinking of my blurry future.
My knees were weak and my feet wobbly as I alighted from the car the moment we got to the pack house, there were expensive decorations hanging around and the entire house reeked of celebration, something that barely happened when I got married.
Maids awaited us with umbrellas and Phillip; Kyan's personal guard brought him an umbrella, he walked briskly into the house, leaving the rest of us behind and umbrellas were being given to the rest of the family, I stood still in the heavy downpour waiting for my own cover but there was only one left.
As a maid ran towards me with the umbrella but Clarice intercepted her on the way and I could see her smirk at me. She approached the car Andrea was in and gave the umbrella to her. I was left unattended to, under the rain.
