chapter 1
Damien’s p.o.v
I was sat at the lobby of an apartment in the middle of the city. The reason I was here was to see the apartment. It was beautiful. Modern. Something that would be associated with the ‘queen’ name. queen is our family name. it was like our ancestors knew that we would be giants in this world. The queen name was worth billions of dollars. And I, as the heir to queen enterprises, my net worth was billions. I was the president of Queen construction. My dad, Henry Queen, was in charge of the entire company. We had many businesses. But Queen construction was my baby. I had the queen brand to back me up but I started this company from the ground up at the age of twenty. Currently am thirty-five years old and one of the most eligible bachelors in the city. Also, I appeared in the top thirty under thirty since I was twenty-two. I was married once but that did not last but I was glad it did not. Marriage was not for me. Love was a distraction and pointless. People cheat and lie and my marriage proved that.
Anyway, the reason I was in this apartment was because it clearly had a queen logo upfront and I was sure that it was not one of our own. Well, the logo almost resembled that of pierce construction but it had two wedding bands at the center. And it looked very familiar. One building with a logo popping up was not an issue. Except, the owner was currently nominated as the most successful ceo three years in a row. He had several other businesses. But he was a ghost. He never showed up to any of the ceo awards, or parties for the rich and elite in the city or country, charities. No one knew who he was but his businesses were well known. There are not that many billionaires in a city. Millionaires, tons. But billionaires, a handful and we all knew each other. We all grew up together. We had collaborations and deals together. This particular one was a self-made billionaire which made him all the more interesting. His logo had been popping up everywhere in the city from car shops to designer shops to a hotel along the beach and on transport trucks. They had a good mind for business. They would be rivals if they continued on their upward trend. I was not here for war.
On the contrary. I wanted to collaborate. Queen construction could use their trucks for moving material and products. And I had to know he architect to this apartment. They were talented and could be useful to queen construction and enterprise as a whole. I was just seated there minding my business when a kid in uniform ran in and sat right next to me. I get that she was young but she was old enough to know what personal space was. She was seated right next to me almost touching me. She got up and looked me in the eye. She looked so disturbingly familiar yet I was sure that I had never seen her. I barely interacted with kids so I knew the few very well. Hey sir. What are you doing here? I have never seen you around and nobody has moved so you can’t have moved in. and your suit looks expensive so you are definitely not homeless. She asked. She looked around nine or ten. She knew a lot. did your parents not teach you not to talk to strangers? You could get kidn*pped you know. I replied. She laughed. I am safe here. This is my home and if you are a kidnapper, you can’t take me here. I know this building better than you. She replied unbothered. This was one interesting child. And I only have a mom. I looked at her. Why? What happened to your dad? I asked now curious. I don’t know why I was talking to a nine-year-old but I had nothing better to do.
My mom said he does not know I exist. Even if he did he would not give a s**t. He was not big on having a family. She replied. I frowned. She was adorable. No man would ever reject her if he was in his right mind. And was she allowed to curse? I looked around the lobby. There was no one in sight. It was a bit early for anyone to be coming home anyway. And where is your mom or whoever is in charge of you? It is awfully irresponsible to leave you on your own. I asked. My mom is outside making a work call. She is usually busy but she picks me up from school and works from home until bedtime. She was a good mom from the looks of it. I was still bothered. She looked too familiar. Where are my manners? She suddenly exclaimed. I looked at her confused. She smiled what I could describe as a business smile. Good evening sir. Am Autumn Queen. my eyebrows shot to my hairline. Did she just say Queen? it was not a common sir name. or was it a nickname? Did my dad have illegitimate kids? And my extended family lived in an entirely different state. We kept in touch with my cousins so she was not one of theirs. Or was she? Did she mean Queen us? Or it was a coincidence.
She was looking at me with confused eyes. She had her hand stretched out in greeting. Mister, when someone introduces themselves and holds their hand out in greeting you are supposed to shake their hand and introduce yourself back. My mom says it is basic manners and important for when I grow up. She told me c*****g her hip. I raised my hand and shook her tiny one in mine. Good evening miss. Am Damien Queen. I introduced. It was her turn to look shocked. She quickly puled her hand from mine and took a step back. Have a good evening. I have to go home now. She said and ran off. Okay. Sus. She seemed to realize who I was and she basically ran away. A possibility that I was avoiding thinking about dominated my entire mind. Was she mine? Impossible. I was always careful with my s****l partners. I used protection and made them take the after pill just in case. And if she was nine or ten, I was still married. There is no way my ex-wife would have been pregnant. Right? I tried to think of our marriage but the more I thought about it, the more ridiculous it was. I would have noticed if she was pregnant. But she could not have been. I let a small laugh escape at the ridiculousness of thinking that that child would be mine.
I got up to leave. I would have to find another way to meet the owner. And it definitely would have to be another day. I passed a woman at the door but I barely got to see her. My mind was still racing for some reason. And she seemed to be in a hurry. Must be the girl’s mother. I stopped at the thought. If she was the girl’s mother, I would verify that she was not mine and squash that idea from my mind. I tended to obsess over s**t and if I did not get the clarity I wanted right now, things would get even more ridiculous. But by the time I got to the elevator it was long gone. The scent lingering though felt familiar. This was ridiculous. Am sure that child was not mine. If she was I would have known immediately. Right? I finally left the building. I Was meeting Cole, Dylan and Tyler. We had not seen each other for weeks so we arranged a hang. I was distracted the entire ride to the club. I got to the vip area and found the guys already seated and talking animatedly. I poured a glass of the whiskey they were drinking and downed it in one go. Then another one and another one. Whoa. Dude. slow the f**k down. Rough day? Cole asked. I let out a big sigh.
I have a weird question. The guys all looked at me curious and confused at the same time. Other than my family, do you guys know any other Queen? I asked. There was a moment of silence then they all groaned and spoke at the same time. You had me worried for a second. You were so serious we thought it was important Dylan exclaimed. Your surname is ridiculous and rare. Why? This time it was Tyler. Did you meet a secret relative or something? Ty joked. I looked at him pointedly. Oh s**t. Dude are you serious? Cole said sitting up. The weirdest thing happened today. I met a kid named Autumn Queen and when I introduced myself she hauled ass. I told them. So you are all freaked out because you met a random kid with a name the same as yours and she’s sus cause she ran away when you introduced yourself? Aren’t you being a little paranoid? Dylan tried to reason. See. He also thought that there was no way she was mine. I leaned back. Where did you meet her anyway? Dylan asked. I had gone to check out that apartment with my knockoff logo on it. I want to find this guy once and for all. But I did not find out anything. The kid distracted me. Our night continued like that. With business talk. But I could not get the kid out of my mind. I was going to find her and clear all the doubt from my mind. But my schedule for the next few days was packed and I could not go anywhere. I had meetings back to back. We were expanding to Asia and it was a lot of work. It took me two weeks to get back to that lobby. I sat and waited.
Autumn’s p.o.v
I should really stop talking to strangers. I saw a man seated at the lobby and decided to talk to him. Who knew that that is how I would meet my dad. I knew his name but not what he looked like. It would have been easy to find out with the internet and I was planning to. But in the future when I was an adult and able to understand things better. We looked really alike. For a successful billionaire and business man he was slow. I paced in the living room and hoped that I would be able to keep my mouth shut. I tended to be a blubber mouth when I made a mistake. Mom never talked about dad. I was able to get through the first night pretty easily. Mom was busy. The next day after school I was with my nanny and I asked her to go before me and check if there was a man in the lobby. She thought it odd but did it after I told her I was playing tag with one of the residents. There was not. I sighed in relief and skipped home. This went on for a few days he must have forgotten about me. Seriously? He did not find my behavior sus? Oh well, good for me I guess. I stopped sending. Meredith after a few days and went back to my carefree attitude. I was hopping to the elevator when I saw Damien Queen at the same spot I met him. I closed my eyes and made a bee line for the elevator. He caught my back pack. Not so fast sweetheart. We have things to discuss. He carefully dragged me to the sofa and sat me down. I shrunk in my spot and pouted. He smiled and threw Meredith who was rushing towards us a menacing look that had her stopping dead in her tracks. He pointed to the sofa on the other side of the lobby out of earshot and she waddled to it and sat awkwardly. Tell me everything about yourself. He demanded. I see why mom left and never looked back.
