Katerina Rivera, holding a paperback novel, reads on the garden restaurant terrace as Pari arrives for their lunch date. The petite seating area, large enough for only four tables, overlooks rows of tropical flowers nestled between monstera plants and a northern bay inlet in Haleiwa. Upon spotting Pari, Katerina unreels the table parasol to shade their seats from the sun, removes her sunglasses, and pulls her long blond hair away from her face with an abalone butterfly barrette. They order deli sandwiches and herbal teas.
The women first discuss Dee Lamar. Katerina says Dee has returned to her hotel room in Laie, on the eastern shore of the island. Katerina adds that Dee has calmed, thanks in part to long phone discussions with her wife, and has evaded media inquiries, tho
