Intro
Jackson POV:
I hate hockey, I hate hockey, I hate hockey!
I didn’t realize when I signed up for athletic medicine as a class that I’d basically become the hockey teams personal water boy. When we all had to pick which sports team we were assigned to I sprinted to the board to put myself down for girls softball, I knew I wasn’t going to be spending any extra time near these meatheads. Unfortunately when all the girls started fighting over who would get to take over the hockey team the teacher made the executive decision to assign a male to the job, more specifically me.
I have big dreams to become a doctor and other then the required health classes in high school, athletic medicine is the closest thing to med school I’m gonna get while I’m here. Although if you ask me the class was more of a popular girl breading ground. The girls who were popular did it so they could spend more time with their jock boyfriends, and the girls who wanted to be popular took it to try to snatch jock boyfriends. The hockey team wasn’t too happy when I showed up to practice today and they discovered they got the only male athletic trainer. We handle any sort of athletic wrapping prior to games or practice, any minor injuries, and help with recovery. These guys were all expecting some small cute blonde chick to be massaging their muscles and if looks could kill I’d definitely be a goner.
“Jackie! I almost didn’t recognize you without a book glued to your face.”
It’s Phillip, the most tolerable of the hockey players. He has wild blonde hair and piercing blue eyes, he’s smaller than most of the team but still towers over me, he’s really quite beautiful. Oh no, I’m staring. He definitely noticed I was staring because he goes on before I can respond.
“Can I get some water? Practice is almost over and the rest of the team is gonna stampede you at any moment.”
I look at him trying to figure out if he’s joking or not, for starters I didn’t realized I had sat here angry and spaced out for the whole duration of the practice and second of all I’m in the teams box on the side, I’m pretty sure I’m safe in here. I look at the clock on my phone then look back up at him to respond, but he beats me to it again. This time with a hint of a chuckle.
“Today was a shorter practice, it’s usually twice as long… also you might want to work on that staring problem. I know you’re probably just glitching without a book in front of you, but watch out staring at these other guys like that, they might think you’re gay or something.”
Sh*t. Did he say that because he knows? I smile and nod back and thank god he seems pleased and skates away. I’m keeping my head down until this stupid practice is over!
I realize only moments later that he was not joking, about the stampede part that is, I have almost every player skating way too fast towards me. Even in the box I’m scared. I start handing out water as fast as I can. Everyone’s coming off the ice and replenishing. All but one.
