Emilia's POV
It wasn't only the mist that came in. It moved around me as if it were alive, going around my ankles and winding through the roots as if looking for something to hold on to. The air chilled the air and made every breath a slight pain. I tasted the wet ground and a bitter taste, but I couldn't identify it. The trees were tall, and their twisted branches stretched up to the crack as if they wanted to keep the Veil from coming apart. But the injury was getting bigger, as if a hole was forming in a delicate piece of cloth. The light coming from it was silvery at first, but it soon turned violet and became as dark as bruises.
