Chapter 14

1017 Words
The last two weeks seem to be dragging on until we get to the night before we leave to go see Scott. I'm running around like a chicken with it's head cut off trying to make sure that I have everything packed up and ready to leave in the morning. I go over my list several times to make sure I had what we would need and then check on the kids one more time. I slowly open their door and find that Holden has moved into bed with his sister. I had changed them to toddler beds because they had gotten too big for their cribs. I softly shut the door to their room and head to bed. I don't think that I'll be sleeping tonight though. I'm too excited to see Scott in the morning that I just can't will myself to sleep. I toss and turn all night into the wee hours of the morning. I finally fall asleep at about three in the morning or rather that was the last time I looked at the time. I barely hear my alarm going off and it just seems like I didn't sleep at all. Oh well I'll snooze on the road. Yeah we're driving with two three year olds. It will be okay though right? We can handle it. I tiredly get out of bed and dress before going downstairs to start breakfast for the kids. After I finish up breakfast I go and wake the kids. They would be getting up soon anyways. I take the kids down the stairs to the kitchen to eat. Once we are done I clean up the kids and take them to my mom's room so they can see her before we leave in a few hours. My mom had decided to stay home from the office so she could see them. We slowly open the door and the kids go flying on to the bed to wake their nanny up. "Nanny, wake up it's time to see us," Holden says. "Well hello my prince and princess," my mom signs. They are so excited to see her even though they seen her the night before. "Nanny is going to miss you guys while you're gone," she says. Whenever we all talk we try to sign for Harper so she doesn't feel left out. The only ones that haven't bothered to learn are Dylan and Sabrina. They act like they don't have to. I already informed Dylan that we are going out of state to see Scott and that if he wants to talk to the kids he's more than welcome to call. They are too little to stay still long enough to talk on the phone. I'm just glad that our divorce will be final in two weeks so I don't have to deal with that anymore. Before I know it Scott is pulling into the driveway to pick us up. We load up the bags and the kid's stuff and say goodbye to my mom and siblings. My older brother didn't really think it was necessary to stop and say goodbye or anything. I haven't seen him in weeks. That's okay though I am learning to just take things as they come. It's actually pretty hard. I just hope that I don't have any nightmares while in bed next to Scott. That could be bad. Plus we'll be sharing a room with the kids. I don't want to scare them with my nightmares. It's been a while since I've had them but they always jump out when I least expect it. I introduce the kids to Scott and of course Holden is his buddy right off the bat but little Harper hides behind me only peaking around my legs. "Harper honey this is Scott. Can you wave hi to him for me," I sign. She peaks her head out from behind me and waves hello. "Hi pretty girl. You look just like your mama," he says. I sign to her what he says and she smiles great big. "I take it you like that he called you pretty," I sign. Harper is super smart she's picking up on ASL so fast that I can barely keep up with her. We have also been working on the alphabet for both of them. I don't want her to think that she can't do something. Sure there will be difficulties that she will have to overcome but for the most part she will be okay. Plus she has all of our support and now Scott's. We get the kids buckled in and we say one last goodbye before we head out. Finally on the road the kids watch dvd's in the back so they are silent. They are watching show that signs as well as talks so Harper can enjoy it as well. Halfway through the movie I notice Harper staring outside as the trees and landscape pass us by. She loves being outdoors and feeling the sun on her skin, feeling the breeze flow through her hair and the grass between her toes. "So we are staying with your friend at his apartment while out here," I ask? "Yeah, Jordan was kind enough to offer us a place to stay until I get out of the Army," he says. "That was really nice of him," I say. "Yeah, he's a good guy. He just lost his wife a few months ago to cancer so he's kind of lonely," he says. "Oh no, I can't even imagine how he must feel," I say. "Yeah it's pretty sad," he says. We make a few pit stops so we can all use the restrooms then back on the road we go. We end up pulling into the apartment complex a little after midnight. The kids had been asleep for a few hours now and didn't wake when we moved them into the apartment. We say a brief hello to Jordan before we head off to bed. Almost immediately Scott falls asleep but it takes me a bit to finally fall asleep.
