Chapter One
CHAPTER 1 (Elmer Pov) Something was always wrong and I couldn't stop it from always happening. I'm Elmer and I'm trapped in a dark world of despair. I currently pressed my head down on my pillow and tried to stop the loud noise downstairs but that was unpreventable. The a loud bang on the wall, with glass shattering everywhere. I could hear my father curse, while my mum cried out loudly. I couldn’t stop myself from hearing this noise even though I wish that I at least had some sought of magic too. I always wished that there was a way, I could be able to just close my eyes and disappear from all these but that too was impossible. I was stuck here as it became unbearable for me with my head buried down the pillow. I cursed out loud and pushed the pillow away from my face which was already sweaty with my hair stuck and scattered on my face. I just wanted to have a peaceful night just like everyone else but this time the scream downstairs jerked me up on my feet and I instantly hated myself for jumping on the loose floorboard and making it creak loudly. The last thing I needed was to draw any attention upstairs. According to the clock, it was 2 am so I couldn’t help but wonder why he was hitting her by this time of the night, of course, he was drunk what else. If I should count, this was the tenth time this week she was being beaten by him, isn't this tragic? He doesn't even have a reason to hit her, he just gets angry occasionally and feels that hitting her would relieve him of his bad mood, what a prick! I crept across the room toward the door while avoiding the loose board on the floor. I needed to hear clearly to know what was happening/or how I could help. In other not to get noticed, I quietly pressed my body on the door to listen to the noise downstairs. Then again, I could hear my mum's loud sobbing and my dad's loud yell. I just wished I could go down and save her but of course, that was the last thing he would want from me. I would never forget my past experiences after interfering. The last time I tried to save her from getting beaten by him, it didn’t go down well for both of us. But gosh, I just wish I could do something instead of being here in my room with my body pressed on the door. How the f**k could I even call myself a daughter after hiding cowardly in my room. All I had done was always hide in my room whenever she was in trouble and pain. I slide my back on the door and reached out to comb my disarranged red hair with my fingers. "I can’t go down there to save her and I also can’t sit here and listen to her cries" I mumbled and shut my eyes to pray for some kind of miracle to make all these stops. I wanted to just shut my mind out and pretend that none of this was happening but how could I? Maybe if I stay like this for quite a while the noise might die down. The next scream jerked me up on my feet and this time, my legs took over my body. I quickly rushed barefoot down the stairs within less than a minute. And I was just in time to see him holding mum's flower vase over her head, ready to hit her to death. I knew I had to do something quickly! And the only thing worth doing at that time was to rush toward them while ignoring that shattered glass on the ground. Despite feeling it sting on my bare feet, all I could think of was to save her from getting hit I pushed her out of the way and the only thing I remember was hearing her scream out my name... I didn’t know if I was still alive or dead but only when I felt the sharp pain in my head did it draw to me that I was still alive but where was I? The only thing I remembered was hearing my mum scream out my name but what happened afterward? "Did I black out? Where was my father? What had he done? Did he do something worst after I had stopped him from hitting her" I subconsciously asked myself? My eyes felt heavy as I blinked them open. The pain that shot through me was unbearable. I had to bite it back to prevent my skull from exploding. My head pounded loudly in my ear and I had to struggle to sit up. My mum's blue towel which I had noticed had been placed on my head was now laying on the bed beside me. “Jesus” I muttered while holding my hand to my head. It felt like it was going to fall off any second and for some minutes I didn’t move hoping that my headache would soon subside. I couldn’t even open my eyes clearly or focus my gaze on anything in my rat-tattered room but I had to get up. I couldn’t lie down on the bed this way, I had tons of work to do rather than staying in bed all day. I got out of bed and slowly dragged myself to the front of the mirror to see the stained red bandage that was already wrapped around my head, I hadn’t noticed it till now. It was probably because my head was too heavy to think or focus on anything. I stared at my bloodshot eyes and my tattered red hair “I look like s**t !” I muttered under my breath before slowly slipping out of my brown shapeless dress that mum had convinced me to put on the previous day. Carefully, I slipped them all off and watched my naked frame on the cracked mirror which had been laid on the wall to avoid falling. "My disarranged red hair looks like a bird's nest which hasn't been washed for weeks. I look too horrible… "like death" I whispered to myself in anger. I held my hand up to my face and tried to stop the wavering headache that was tearing my head apart while having a flashback of what I had done. I had pushed mum away to get hit instead, was that a good idea? I sluggishly reached for the towel hanging beside the mirror and wrapped it around my lean body. I hated the idea of looking at myself In the mirror. There was nothing good to look at; only a sickly body and disarranged hair.
