Chapter Four

I might be emotional at times but I knew that I was never crazy. No matter how Daniel tried to paint it in front of anyone, I was never crazy. I had done my best to try to retrieve his memories via looking at pictures of us together and also pictures from his childhood. But there we're somethings that I wish I knew about Daniel. There we're some things that he wasn't telling me. There is a particular room in our house where he forbade me from entering. It is called the Artic. Strangest thing happened this morning though. While strolling around the house and picturing how empty my life was living here with a memory loss husband, I saw something. And I am sure of what I saw. I got closer to a particular frame of Daniel wearing a blue navy blue suit dressed like the Britains back in the days. He looked so majestic in his attire. He was the kind of guy that could make heads turn, even men turned heads wherever he went. He had this strong and powerful aura around him that those with a weak self esteem would mistake as arrogance. There was something about him that just drew people to him. He was like a magnet. People dreamt of being him, women dreamt of being with him. Women envied me for having a husband like him, if only they knew the pains that I went through. In the public eyes, everything looks so rosy but behind closed doors is a totally different story. Sometimes I wonder if that was how his dad treated his mum. Because where in the world would he learn such a behaviour from? I swear to God if Daniel had married someone like Tina he would have been a goner by now. Sometimes I wish I had the kind of heart that Tina had. A very fierce and powerful heart. Cold and dark. Then no man would ever think of laying his filthy hands on me but I was blinded by love. I knew what was happening to me but I swear I would die if I lost Daniel. If he had died in that hospital bed, I would have ended my life once and for all cause my life has no meaning anymore without me. I'm such a hopeless romantic. While staring at the picture frame, the wind came in with force and the windows started flapping carelessly. I went over to the other side of the room to close the window then a green vase broke. Very expensive. I remember when Daniel bought that verse from Dubai. He bought it for a very costly amount and he warned that no one should ever touch the verse. If he still had his memory, I swear I would be shaking by now but since he didn't I just went down on my knees and started picking up the glasses. I picked them one after the other and placed them at a separate spot. Then I caught my eyes on something. A key. I picked it up and it read, “The Artic.” So that's why Daniel never wanted anyone to touch this vase. He was hiding a very deadly secret. I picked up the key and ran upstairs straight to the artic. The door of the room was closed. I stood front and took a deep breath. It's now or never. I fixed the key into the key hole and dived inside the room absorbing the contents that lay within. It was a really old room and it looked abandoned. Of course, Daniel rarely entered and no one ever cleaned that room. So much for a man that people literally worship. This place was really full of memories. They were pictures of Daniel that I have never even seen before, his old childhood toys, his books back then and a box. A very beautiful yet mysterious box. The box was just like the inanimate version of Daniel. It was luring me in like a magnet and I fell right into it's trap. As I approached the box, shivers ran through my spine. My instincts was telling me to go but my curiosity got the best of me. I lifted the lid, a faint smell of sandalwood wafted out. Inside the box i found a letter addressed to me with a key attached to it. What could it be about? I was very sure that this letter was a cryptic letter and it contained certain dark secrets from Daniel's past. I felt a cold run down my spine as I realized that the man i have been married to and have been f*****g have been hiding things from me. It read; My dearest, If you're reading this I'm gone. I've been trying to protect you from the truth but I fear that the more I do so the more it catches up with us. The things I've done.. the things I've had to do… they still haunt me. You deserve to know the truth but I fear that it will put you in danger. I have taken steps to keep you safe but I cannot guarantee anything. If you want to know the truth, follow the key. It will lead you to the answers you seek. Yours always, Daniel. The smell of ink on the paper was still fresh. I am sure it was written few days before his accident if I'm not mistaken. I couldn't help myself. I was battling with the desire to find out the truth and my fear of what I might discover. It was creeping the hell out of me. I know I've always been a coward but I'll take to get bolder by taking little steps at a time. “Lexi,” a voice called me. I turned my neck and found Daniel by the entrance of the attic. “What are you doing here?” He questioned. “I was just looking for something.” I replied. “Something?” He came in and snatched the letter from my hands despite me trying to hide it behind my back. “What is this?” He flung the paper at me. “It's nothing.” I replied. I tried to pick the paper but he picked it back up and read the content in it. “My dearest,” he scoffed, “what is this? Are you having an affair? Are you cheating on me ehnn? Is that why you came back home late last night because you were with your lover? And here i was waiting for you like a fool.” “Daniel it's not what you think it is.” “It's not what? What's this place? Where you hide all the letters that your lover gives you?” “It's not..” Bam! A resounding slap landed on my cheek, “I don't want to hear anything from you you hoe. Filthy hoe.” He spat at me and left the room. I held my cheek and felt the powerful sensations on it. Maybe Tina was right. A monster will always be a monster. Here I thought he would change with this amnesia but even with his amnesia he was still a monster true and true. It never goes away. I went back to my room and met an angry Daniel. Daniel was staring at the window. Immediately he heard the door snap close he spoke. “Explain something to me Lexi,” he fumed, “who the hell have you been seeing behind my back?” I shuddered, “I have seen no one my love. This is a letter from my later father.” I lied. He turned around and moved closer to me, “You are lying to me and you know that are lying to me.” He raised his voice. “Who the hell have you been seeing behind my back?” He said throwing the letter on the floor and smashing it. “You.” I answered, “the letter is yours.” His eyes widened. “If it's mine then where is the goddamn key?” “I don't know.” “Where is it?” he grabbed me violently by the arm shaking me. “I said I don't know!” I yelled back at me and he slapped me. I landed on the floor with blood coming out of my nose. I honestly don't know where I got the courage to yell back at him. Daniel had really lost it. Just when I thought that he would change his ways. “You won't tell me hunh?” He laughed devilishly, “well I'll teach you.” He pulled out his belt to wipe me like a goat. I ran towards the door and opened it locking him outside. “Open the door now! Open it Lexi. I said open this goddamn door now.” He yelled banging the door. “Arghhh!” Then he proceeded to kicking the door. I was so scared that I pulled out my phone and called for emergency. Thankfully the emergency unit came on time and Daniel was rushed to the hospital immediately. It was a really scary experience for me. ♡ “Mrs. Lexi.” “Yes doctor,” I looked up from the bench i was seated in at the waiting room. “Well, what Mr. Daniel is suffering from is more complex than you think it is?” “What do you mean?” I squeezed the skin at my forehead. “We’ve ran a series of brain scans and the results show that certain areas in his brain are damaged affecting his emotional regulation, memory and impulse control, making his behavior unpredictable.” “What does this mean doctor?” “It means that your husband is a potential threat to himself and those around him. If you do decide to keep him at home, I hope you are aware of the risks and you take extra precautions.” he advised. “Don't worry, i can handle this doctor.” I replied, “Thank you doctor.” “You're welcome,” he patted me on the shoulder and then he left. I looked at Daniel through the glass panel lying down helplessly. I managed to twist the door knob to his ward open and clicked it shut. I sat beside Daniel and looked him in the eyes. I was pained seeing him like this, in this condition. “Daniel,” I whispered touching him gently on his forehead and kissing it. “You'll never leave me,” he grabbed my forearm tight. “You will never leave me.”
