“I am alright,” this is what he said over the phone despite being mortally wounded. “I am alright,” he repeated, so that his wife, daughter and granddaughter would not worry. But just in a couple of hours he passed away.
Viktor Shvets along with his wife of 40 had attended Viche [public meetings] on the Maidan several times and brought warm clothes for the protesters. In the morning of February 18 he was busy repairing a car and when he entered the house his wife was watching the news. “I told him that it was awful, on the Maidan our children were being shot at—and we just stayed at home doing nothing,” his wife Tamara recalls. Viktor started packing his bag.
