Ivan Tarasyuk student, Zalisoche, Volyn region “I’ll be back on Saturday,” said Ivan Tarasyuk to his mother on the phone several days before his death. Till the very end she remained convinced that her son was in Lutsk, studying at the Medical college. On February 20 at 9 am still she was talking to her son over the phone. He told her he was at the college—as always at this hour. At 10 o’clock he was dead. In several hours’ time his mother recognized him on the photos from the blood-stained Maidan. Dozens of dead bodies were lying on the ground in the center of Kyiv. Volunteer medics were bringing in more bodies one after another and didn’t have time to cover the dead. Among them the mother saw her son’s breathless body. February 20 turned out to be the bloodiest day of the Maidan.
