“No...No no no no no, you didn’t say pregnant did you?”
“I did.”
“Ok, missions over im taking you back to Alexandria, can’t have anything happening to you out here while you're pregnant your dad would definitely kill me.”
“We’re not going back.”
“Excuse me? What the hell do you mean we’re not going back?”
“You heard me we’re not going back, we’re going to continue the mission as planned.”
“Samantha we don’t have a car, we’re stuck in the middle of nowhere with limited food supplies, AND YOU’RE PREGNANT.”
A smile crept across my face and being pregnant made me happy. Of course it seemed like a stupid decision to keep going, but knowing i could be the start of a better future for my family made me happy.
“You really are crazy aren’t you, you’re smiling like we couldn’t possibly die out here.”
I looked at the direction we were supposed to be going and I looked at the position of the sun.
“We’ve made it at least halfway if we walk it will take a little bit of a day to get there, we can set up camp if we need to.”
“But-”
“Trust me mark ill be ok, we’ll ration our food and medicine and it’ll be fine but you have to trust me.”
“Ugghhh!!! Fine but if your dad tries to hurt me i’m blaming you.”
We started walking and it seemed like we had barely gotten anywhere, but i was determined to keep going. If we gave up now everything would be in vein and by the looks of those wires being chewed through so suddenly it didn’t seem like an accident. Sabotaged is more the word and if it was the coucil members were onto us then that means another trick couldn’t be to far behind.
“Jesus are we there yet?”
“You sure do complain a lot don’t you mark?”“Well when you’re not use to being in the middle of nowhere with a pregnant crazy lady, you kind of get a little on edge, not to mention the pregnant lady is part of your family and you know her dad would murder you if something happened to his pregnant daughter.”
I turned to look at him.
“Sorry im just...can we set up camp now?”
When he asked, I realized that the sun had already gone down. I must have been lost in thought while we were walking.
“Sure we can continue tomorrow.”
We set up our tents and he started a fire for some food.
“Finally, i'm starving.”
He pulled out a can of beans and soup.
“Which one do you want? Pork with bacon or chicken with broth?”
“Beans are fine.”
I stared off into the distance, I could see the shape of the mountains that were a little far off.
“Something wrong?”
“Nah, just thinking about what life could be.”
“What do you mean?”
“Well before this I never thought about anything different from Alexandria. I thought that would be it and i was fine with that, but now the whole possibility of something better is just exciting don’t you think?”
He finished emptying the can of beans into the pot and gave me a straight face.
“Honestly, I think having the luxury of the bases is pretty nice. Civilians get to relax everyday aside from household chores. No real jobs, no real responsibility? Then when i think about what people did before that, everyone had to do some kind of stupid job to survive and when i think about the world going back to that it f*****g sounds aweful as shit.”
I looked at him awkwardly, then i started putting his pieces together. Wines, complains, panicks for no real reason.
“You know i think i've figured you out.”
“Oh really? What exactly have you figured out?”
“You’re afraid, aren’t you?
“What?”
“You’re afraid, i mean it all makes sense, you apparently didn’t want to be on the this mission, you and your dad don’t see eye to eye, you’d rather live in the safe confined walls of the base as a civilian, you complain about almost everything….your afraid of life and death situations so you’d rather live in confined walls knowing nothing bad could possibly happen to you.”
He stood up, with clenched fists and turned to walk away. He didn’t exactly deny what i figured must have hit a nerve.
