Chapter one - Career and choices
Kali's POV:
Hey, my name is Kali James. I am twenty years old. At the age of seventeen, I decided to post covers of songs on my YouTube channel. Some of them had millions of views. I never expected them to be so successful. I have always loved singing, but I didn't dare to do it in front of people. I was afraid they would laugh at me. In my high school, we had a talent show. I sang a song, but everyone was mad at me. Since I started gaining views, people started staying away from me. I received many comments. Some of them thought I was faking it and I couldn't sing. Others said it was too much hype for nothing. I tried to ignore it, but I couldn't. This is why, for my senior year, I was in a different school. I begged my parents to transfer me. They didn't believe me until they saw it. That's why I realized my first song at eighteen. This is when I had a small album. It was with only five songs. I had an American tour the same year. Now, I am a successful singer with my team and two albums. I plan to come out with a third one. The plan was to make an album every year. With tours, that became impossible. The good news is that my assistant, who is my best friend, is helping me. My boyfriend, as well. I have many people around me who care about me. I hope that all my shows will be so successful.
The show last night was great. I got sold out in a week. I will never be grateful enough for everything I have. My fans are a great support. I never thought I would have so much when I grew up. I met my best friend, Jessie, in middle school. Back then, I had no idea what I wanted to do. I was still a kid. Now, she is helping me with everything. Of course, I pay her for that. We have lived together since I moved out. That was two years ago. I wanted to be independent and take care of myself.
Currently, I am in the studio. I wanted to make an acoustic version of one of my songs. Let's say that I never rest. I have a small team of people who always help me with everything. I have tried to play instruments. Well, I realized it wasn't my thing. The only instrument I use is my voice. I have a stylist, but I use her only to tell me if the outfit I choose looks good on me. When I was ready, I went to the room where we would shoot the video.
- Ok, I'm ready. Should we start?
- This is the setup. You can tell us if you want to remove or add something. - my producer said
- No, I like it. After all, it's an acoustic music video. We'll leave special effects for the regular videos.
- Good. Mike is here. He will play the guitar for your song.
- Hi, Mike.
- Hey. Can we take a picture?
- Sure. Come here.
- Thank you so much. It's a privilege to work with you.
- Aww, you're so sweet.
- Do I need to be in a specific position or something?
- Your job is to sit on the chair next to me and play the guitar. Something that I can't do. - I said, chuckling
- Kali, you have a guest.
- Hey, Bryan. Jess.
- Hey. I came to tell you about the show you have. It's in this bar and after two days.
- Let me check. It looks nice. I will do it.
- Cool.
- Who is he? - Bryan asked
- This is Mike. He will be in my video.
- Should I be worried?
- Relax. It's only a video. No one will replace you. - I said and kissed his cheek
- I hope so.
- If you excuse me, I have to work.
- Can I watch it silently?
- Of course. I would love that. I won't deny your support.
- Ok, if everyone is done, we can start. - my producer said
- Where is Mike?
- I'm here. I used the bathroom.
- Sit on the chairs so we can check the frame.
- Hold on. It's only a touch. - my stylist said and did my hair
- Are you ready?
- Wait. Yes. You look perfect.
- Thanks. I appreciate your help.
- The chairs need to be closer or the camera far away. - the cameraman said
- I prefer the chairs. I want a closer look.
- Stop. That is perfect. Both of you fit well in the camera.
- Can we start?
- Yes. Three, two, one. Go.
The music video was so good. I don't know where Mike came from. He can play great with the guitar. I took a snip from the video and posted it on my i********: story. After ten minutes, it had one thousand views. People were excited about this. On my YouTube channel, I only post songs. This is why I was wondering if I should make another one. There, my fans will get to know me better. It will be like a vlog one. I can post the behind-the-scenes of my music videos and tours.
- The video is perfect. Thank you so much. Mike, you are amazing.
- It was my pleasure working with you.
- Thanks.
- We can go for lunch. Kali, what do you think? - Jess asked
- Why not?
- Will you come back to the studio later? - Bryan asked
- I don't know. I have some things in my head that I would like to record, but they are incomplete.
- You can come. I will help you.
- Thanks Chase.
- Always.
- Let's go. - Jess said
- I'll come after lunch. - I said, and we left
- Will you ever stop working? - Bryan asked
- No, why?
- I see.
- What?
- Nothing.
- Bryan.
- I wonder when you will have time for me.
- I always do.
- Are you sure? I don't think I fit in the picture anymore.
- Yes, you do.
- I will agree with him. He deserves some attention from you. - Jess said, chuckling
- What do you want me to do? I have a show after two days.
- Will you be busy on the weekend?
- I don't think so. Do you have something in mind?
- No, but I thought we could go out.
- I will try to make this possible. I promise.
- I will believe it when I see it.
- Deal.
- I'm so hungry.
- Jess, are you ok? Lately, you have eaten a lot.
- I'm not pregnant. This calms down my stress.
- If you say so.
My best friend is single, but I like bugging her. I should spend more time with her and my boyfriend, but I'm busy. I will make it up to them. I spent the whole afternoon in the studio. Chase is a songwriter and helps me record my songs. I thought all the lyrics I had in my head could go in one song. No. Everything was too different. There will be mixed emotions.
- Let's start from the beginning. - Chase said
- Hear this out. If you want me back, you have to play the right track.
- I get the rhyme but not the lyrics.
- This is why you are here. I'm not a songwriter.
- Why don't we record what we have so far? This will be one song. Take it and go there.
- Yes, sir.
- Are you ready?
- Yes.
- Go.
- How does it sound? - I asked after I finished
- Great.
- There is something that doesn't fit right.
- Like what?
- I don't know. Something is not correct.
- Can I fix it?
- Maybe. Check this out here. - I said and walked up to him
- I see. We can change the lyrics a bit, but that will be tomorrow.
- Why?
- Check the time.
- It's 6 pm. What? How?
- You always lose track of time when you are here. Go home and rest.
- Only a little bit.
- Kali. I want to go home. I think you should do it, too.
- Fine. Thank you for the help.
- No problem. I wonder when you will drop the next hit.
- You have to wait for that. I planned to have a song every month, but it's too much.
- Take a rest because you need it.
- I know. I'm sorry for torturing you.
- You aren't. I know you love working.
- It's better if I go home. Thanks for the help, and I'll see you tomorrow.
- Sure thing. We can go out together. Will you lock the door here?
- Yes.
Chase and I walked out together. I went to buy some things for dinner. I had cravings for something specific. Later, I went home. I opened the door, but there was no one there. I went to the kitchen and saw Bryan and Jess. I didn't know he would be here. I mean, he didn't tell me. I left my things and kissed him. He didn't look happy to see me. This time, I didn't do anything. I don't know what is going on with him. For some reason, he kept looking at me.
- What?
- He came to search for you. - Jess said
- Oh.
- That was two hours ago. - Bryan said, madly
- I'm sorry. I had to work.
- You always do.
- What can I do to make it up to you?
- In the pictures, everything looks fine. I can't even tell if we are together.
- Of course, we are.
- When? You are never here.
- Why are you mad at me now?
- Because I think you put your career over everything.
- Of course, I did. This is my job. I can't leave it.
- What about me?
- You are not part of this. I keep the people close to me away from the business.
- But you never have time for me.
- That is not true. I'm trying my best. You can be more supportive.
- Me? As if I never was.
- It doesn't look like that. This is important for me. Why can't you understand it?
- I do, but you should understand me. I barely see you. Your best friend stays at home more than you. I wonder when you will open the door for me instead of her.
- What do you want me to do?
- To slow down and look at the people around you. When was the last time you called your parents?
- Yesterday, for ten minutes.
- See? You don't even have time for them.
- Why do you care so much about this?
- Because it's bugging me.
- Well, I'm sorry. I have other priorities.
- Are you saying that I'm not?
- You are, but not like the rest.
- I see. Well, enjoy being alone.
- Where are you going?
- Home. You are tired and need a rest. That doesn't include me.
- You can stay.
- No, thanks. When you have more time, call me. - he said and left
- Really? He is trying. - Jess said
- Don't start.
I made my dinner and went to eat it in my room. Jess came as well. Everyone wants to be with me without asking me what I want. I like spending time with friends and family, but music is my life. I worked so hard to be where I am. I can't just give up because someone is not happy for me. People come and go. With careers, it's not like that. I should work a lot if I want to be successful. When will they understand this? Only my parents are not complaining. They watch me online all the time. Fans post videos of every show I make. I hope that my choices won't disappoint anyone.
